Keeping you up to date with the latest news from NuGen ISSUE 3 WINTER 2016 Our view A message from Tom Samson The last few months have been momentous for the nuclear industry. The Hinkley Point C decision has been pivotal for the future of the industry and is a great leap towards the UK achieving a low-carbon energy future. I spoke at the recent Nuclear Industry Association Conference, Nuclear2016, alongside the outgoing Nuclear Decommissioning Authority Chief Executive, John Clarke. John is a statesman of the nuclear industry and has been a mentor, an inspiration and a massive supporter of the Moorside Project. His impact on the landscape of the nuclear industry cannot be overestimated. We have had some landmark moments in our own project, reaching the end of the 2016 site characterisation campaign at Moorside which has been one of the UK s largest site investigation projects with over 100 people working on-site. Over the summer, NuGen completed its second stage consultation on plans for the Moorside Project. The scale of the response surpassed all our expectations with more than 3,000 people visiting the 34 public events resulting in over 1200 feedback responses. Confidence in nuclear new build continues to grow Nuclear new build in the UK has taken a number of important strides forward in recent weeks and months, chiefly with the important announcement from the UK Government that it had approved the construction of the Hinkley Point C nuclear power plant in Somerset. NuGen s Chief Executive Officer, Tom Samson, welcomed the announcement by saying: The news is positive for the UK nuclear new build market, where developers such as NuGen are investing heavily in delivering the next generation of low-carbon power for the UK. It demonstrates the viability of new nuclear investment in the UK. Shortly after the announcement, the Rt Hon Greg Clark MP, Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy, took the opportunity to visit the Moorside Site where NuGen is developing Europe s largest new nuclear power station to see the progress first hand. Most recently, Tom Samson gave evidence to the House of Lords Economic Affairs Committee on the economics of UK Energy Policy. Facing questions from the Committee, Tom spoke about the progress and momentum behind the project. Tom said: Our aspiration is to deliver low-cost, affordable, reliable nuclear power to the grid. Nuclear has a meaningful impact on carbon reduction ten per cent of the world s power comes from nuclear, but 40 per cent of the world s carbon abatement comes from that ten per cent. Unsurprisingly, given the knowledge and experience our neighbours and stakeholders have in working with the nuclear industry, the responses were extremely detailed and included a great deal of information which requires careful consideration. I understand and appreciate the appetite for information, but the evaluation work must be completed before we can give any further updates. We have an opportunity to review our plans in parallel with this evaluation work to make certain that Moorside can be delivered on cost, to schedule and in the best way for Cumbria. Our project will be transformational, but during the next year we must work hard making plans to ensure that everyone will feel the benefits. I firmly believe that Moorside will spark a regional transformation. Tom Samson CEO Rt Hon. Greg Clark MP, Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy took the opportunity to visit the Moorside Site - where NuGen is developing Europe s largest new nuclear power station

A fantastic end to a year of Bright Sparks Mayor of Copeland, Mike Starkie with Bright Sparks from Millom School and St Benedict s Over a hundred students from schools across Copeland came together at NuGen s Bright Sparks Schools Energy Conference at the end of September. The conference was the culmination of a year s hard work by students from three schools close to the Moorside Project who have spent the last academic year working on projects focused around low-carbon electricity linked to science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM) subjects. Bright Sparks from St Benedict s, Millom School and The Whitehaven Academy were asked to think about how they would develop low-carbon electricity generation projects in the county, looking at the benefits and impacts of three energy generation technology types nuclear, solar and tidal. Also, during the last school year, teams of Bright Sparks went off to find opportunities for increasing energy efficiency at their own schools, looking for ways to reduce electricity bills and help tackle carbon emissions. NuGen s John Male, Head of Training and Qualifications, was overwhelmed by the positive reaction from the schools: The students have a real passion for the subject and that s what we re trying to encourage It s that passion for science and energy that will enthuse this generation to grasp the career opportunities which will come with a new nuclear power station at Moorside. Copeland s Mayor, Mike Starkie, has been closely involved with the Bright Sparks initiative since it was launched. He said: Bright Sparks is the start of a major opportunity for all the young people of West Cumbria. The school pupils approached this with such drive and innovation it s encouraging to know that we have such bright sparks in our midst. Who knows what amazing projects and achievements they will bring to our area in the future. I congratulate each one of them. 2

Yokota-san, and the rest of the NuGen Board, spent a day at the Moorside Site New Chairman welcomed to Cumbria NuGen s new chairman, Takeshi Yokota, visited Cumbria for the first time since he became chair of NuGen in July. Yokota-san, and the rest of the NuGen Board, spent a day at the Moorside Site to see the progress first-hand and to meet local stakeholders at an event at Coniston Water. Yokota-san said: The culture of Cumbria, particularly West Cumbria, is woven into the fabric of our project. West Cumbria has a long and distinguished industrial heritage, but the pioneering role West Cumbria has had in the nuclear industry is felt across the world particularly in Japan. Evaluating the consultation response More than 3,000 people visited NuGen s consultation events NuGen completed the second stage of its consultation on the proposals for the Moorside Project on 30th July. During the consultation: 34 consultation events were held across Cumbria over an 11-week period More than 3,000 people visited the consultation events Over 1,200 pieces of feedback were submitted Exhibition events were held at schools, in the workplace and on-site at Sellafield Final analysis of the responses is nearly complete but, meanwhile, a parallel piece of work has been underway to consider engineering options in response to the feedback which has been received from the community. Many of the consultation responses have suggested alternative solutions to several important elements of the Moorside Project. At this stage, NuGen is fortunate in being able to evaluate its design choices so the best project can be delivered for all of its stakeholders and, importantly, for those in the communities neighbouring Moorside. Very detailed and valuable feedback was received from local stakeholders and NuGen is committed to working with these stakeholders to shape the final Moorside project plan. This review process will take several weeks to complete and will be followed by further dialogue with stakeholders, including local representatives, to discuss any revisions. 3

NuGen Joins WANO NuGen has joined the World Association of Nuclear Operators (WANO), the international organisation that supports nuclear operators in the pursuit of excellence in nuclear safety and reliability. In becoming a member of WANO, NuGen is demonstrating a clear commitment to delivering the highest standards of safety and reliability. With membership comes the obligation of allowing peer review from other members of WANO, to ensure best practice is shared across the nuclear power industry, worldwide. NuGen s CEO, Tom Samson, signed the membership agreement at a ceremony in London with WANO Chief Executive, Peter Prozesky. WANO offers unrivalled opportunity to share learning and best practice with other nuclear operators from across the world. This is NuGen NuGen recently launched a short film entitled This is NuGen to help explain the exciting project to build a new nuclear power station in West Cumbria. The film stars NuGen s Leanne Hayward, an Environmental Advisor at the Company s Manchester office, who talks about why she believes the Moorside Project will have a positive impact for the UK, and make a difference for mine and future generations to come. In becoming a member of WANO, NuGen is demonstrating a clear commitment to delivering the highest standards of safety and reliability Meeting the Cumbrian Lords The film is available now on NuGen s YouTube channel and will be shown at a range of events and exhibitions in the coming months. John McNamara, NuGen s Head of Corporate Communications, said: We wanted to produce a short film which gave people an update on our project, but would also give an insight into the enthusiasm and drive within the organisation and why our team are proud to be part of the Moorside Project I think Leanne has done an outstanding job and exemplifies the energy of the people in NuGen. In October, NuGen met with the Lords of Cumbria to discuss economic, industrial and development potential from the Moorside Project. The event was hosted in the Atlee Room of the House of Lords by Lord Liddle, the Pro-Chancellor of the University of Lancaster, Cumbria County Councillor and Wigton resident. The Energy Minister and Minister for Cumbria, Baroness Neville-Rolfe, set out the Government s desire for regions to develop a cohesive vision for education, training and skills to help the county deliver the challenging infrastructure projects ahead. The attendees, most of whom were MPs for Cumbria or Lords linked to the county, took the opportunity to ask Tom Samson a range of questions about the project covering innovation, skills, investment and the supply chain. This is NuGen stars NuGen s Leanne Hayward, an Environmental Advisor at the Company s Manchester office 4

Westminster update By Alastair Evans, Head of Government Affairs Although Europe has dominated Theresa May s first 100 days, she has also faced the challenge of the three H s Hinkley, Heathrow and HS2. Following an eight-week review into the EDF Energy project, the Government gave the go ahead for the first new nuclear reactors to be built since Sizewell B sent power to the grid in Launching the first ever company membership with the Nuclear Institute In 2006, the Department of Transport published a strategy for runway expansion and it has taken over 10 years for a Cabinet to give the go ahead to expansion in the South East. On HS2, in spite of a bumpy winter with the loss of the Chief Executive, the political will appears to have held strong. This backdrop should give confidence to everyone involved in the Moorside Project. This Government looks to be taking infrastructure delivery seriously and and appear willing to take on the tough decisions. The Rt Hon Greg Clark MP, the Secretary of State for Business, Energy and Industrial Strategy has been appointed to deliver a positive vision for infrastructure and business across the UK. He has visited the Moorside Site, as well as our shareholders in Japan and we will work with him to take forward many of the difficult challenges that face us on the path to Final Investment Decision (FID). Mr Clark s policy focus is not only on infrastructure delivery, but in ensuring that the local communities benefit. Initiatives like Green Grants and Bright Sparks are the starting point for a range of initiatives that will engage the local, regional and UK workforce and supply chain. However, the Moorside Project will not progress without scrutiny and in November Tom Samson was called before the House of Lords Economic Affairs Committee, a panel of two former Chancellors of the Exchequer and a range of economists and businessmen to answer questions on UK energy policy. This is the second time that Tom has ably steered a path through these difficult sessions and there will be many more to come as we develop this exciting project. NuGen has announced a partnership with the Nuclear Institute (NI) to launch a company membership scheme. The partnership - the first of its kind - will open an agreement with the NI, where all NuGen employees will join as associate members with access to the full range of benefits. NuGen will also support staff who want to work towards attaining full professional membership of the institute. NuGen CEO, Tom Samson, welcomed the announcement: Membership of the NI is a fantastic resource, offering NuGen staff access to training and networking opportunities to enhance their knowledge, develop their skills and their career. To underline NuGen s commitment to its new relationship with the Nuclear Institute, the company has been announced as main sponsor of the Women in Nuclear UK (WiN UK) conference, being held in London in February 2017, where CEO Tom Samson will be a headline speaker. CEO of The Nuclear Institute, Alastair Laird, said: NuGen continue to set high standards and be innovative in their thinking. We are thrilled to be partnering with such a dynamic company setting a high bar for professionalism across all staff working on their new nuclear build development at Moorside. 5

In October, NuGen s Green Grants scheme was awarded a prestigious Chartered Institute of Public Relations award Green Grants is back NuGen s award winning Green Grants scheme, where community projects can apply for support to help them improve the local environment close to the Moorside Project, has had another fantastic response. Design Authority Responsibility for ensuring the safety and integrity of the overall plant design rests within NuGen s Design Authority (DA). That responsibility will commence in earnest as the Moorside Project moves from the current Generic Design Assessment (GDA) phase into Nuclear Site Licence application and site-specific work activities; and will continue throughout the phases of the project into plant operation. Last year, the scheme attracted more than 60 applications, with 17 successful schemes being awarded Green Grants worth more than 37,000. NuGen CEO, Tom Samson, said that Green Grants has become one of the ways in which the project will deliver long-term environmental benefits to the communities close to Moorside. Last year s Green Grants was a runaway success and we have seen some fantastic results from the successful schemes that will be enjoyed by the community for a long time to come. Green Grants has proven to be just as popular with lots of new community projects coming forward to apply for grants I am looking forward to reading about their ideas and plans. In October, NuGen s Green Grants scheme was awarded a prestigious Chartered Institute of Public Relations award in the North West region s Community Relations category. The current DA team comprises a range of technical engineering and safety case specialists along with leads in knowledge management and configuration information management. The DA will continue to grow and strengthen to meet the needs of the phases of the project. MEET THE TEAM: Lidia Haddock - Lead Mechanical Engineer A Chartered Engineer with IMechE, Lidia joined NuGen in February 2015 from Amec Foster Wheeler, where she held Lead Mechanical and Intelligent Customer roles at Sellafield and was Senior Mechanical Engineer for EDF Reactor Services. Lidia is currently on a six month secondment at Westinghouse in Cranberry, US, as part of the on-going knowledge transfer programme. Andrew Chadwick - Safety Case Manager Andrew started work with NuGen in March 2015, joining the team from the National Nuclear Laboratory. Andrew is currently working on the GDA assessment findings and preparing for the handover of the Safety Case following GDA close out. Clive Bright - Design Knowledge Manager Clive is currently working on the GDA adoption knowledge transfer strategy and programme. Clive started work with NuGen in June 2016 and previously worked at Lloyd s Register where he was Global Knowledge Manger for their Energy division; leading a programme of safety software and information and knowledge management projects. Christmas donation to Cumbria Youth Alliance 2,000 raised by NuGen staff has been donated to Cumbria Youth Alliance (CYA) to help fund a series of festive events and activities arranged for the victims of Storm Desmond and the Cumbrian floods of Close to the first anniversary of the storm, Kathryn Booth, Chair of NuGen s Charity Committee, handed over the cheque to CYA - NuGen s longterm charity partner. A year on and people are still counting the cost of the floods. I m delighted to hand over this donation on behalf of NuGen and, thanks to the continuous hard work of CYA, we know it s going to be used exactly where it s needed most in our community said Kathryn. 6
