1 GRANTS Volume XVI! FROM THE ASSISTANT DEAN OF GRANTS Suffolk County Community College (SCCC) and its associated non-profit organizations had a banner year for grants productivity in The College was awarded $4.66 million! the highest level of grants awards in SCCC s history. This increase was made possible by new funding opportunities for higher education provided by the American Recovery & Reinvestment Act (ARRA) and an infusion of federal funds to the U.S. Department of Labor for workforce training. After receiving only three awards in excess of $250,000 last year, SCCC was awarded seven awards above this level in The largest! $675,000! was awarded to Jon DeMaio for the ARRA-Green Innovation Grant Program. This green project enabled substantial savings for the College through enhanced water and energy conservation measures; SCCC received the GIGP funds from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency via the NYS Environmental Facilities Corp. Other major grants received during the academic year included the: (1) U.S. Department of Labor (USDOL)-Community Based Job Training Grant (CBJTG) TEAM grant ($535,559); (2) USDOL-CBJTG Pathways to Opportunities Within Energy & Renewables ($526,566); (3) $494,115 for an ARRA-Health Information Technology Workforce Training subcontract Tidewater Community College, through their U.S. Department of Health & Human Services (DHHS) grant; (4) Career & Technical Education Act (CTEA) grant ($387,169); (5) U.S. Department of Education TRIO-Student Support Services grant ($302,705); and (6) Liberty Partnership Program grant from the NYS Education Department ($253,340). Since the ARRA economic stimulus funding stream has ended, I would like to encourage the College community to submit new proposals to the USDOL, DHHS, and the National Science Foundation during the academic year. Dr. Margery L. Oldfield, College Asst. Dean of Grants SEARCHABLE GRANTS DATABASE Last year, OGD made the SPIN (Sponsored Programs Information Network) database available through SCCC s online library system. SPIN is a keywordsearchable database that lists government and private grant opportunities from more than 6,000 sources. Any member of the College community may perform SPIN searches to locate resources to support curricular, professional or program development, as well as research, travel, and other opportunities. The SPIN database may be accessed through the OGD Funding Sources web page on the College s website. Alternately, SPIN may be accessed from the College s Library page listing all SCCC databases (depthome.sunysuffolk.edu/library/ldatabase.asp). The database is password protected and must be accessed from on-campus or via the library s link with your SCCC login and password. Once logged in, you will see the SPIN search bar shown above. Typing a search term into the bar awakens a drop-down list of keywords. Selecting one or more of these terms retrieves funding opportunities from the database. Results can be sorted, filtered and either printed or delivered to the user s box. Users can also set up custom profiles and searches that scan for opportunities automatically and report results via on a regular schedule, such as weekly or monthly. Dr. W. Troy Tucker, OGD Grant Specialist
