9 Competition is increasing. Over the period 2001 to 2014, the number of proposals declined while the number of awards were slightly up. In FY 2014, NSF completed action on 48,051 proposals and made 10,958 awards, for a proposal success rate of 23% (down from 31% in 2001). 12 ORED Faculty Research Support Program Provides limited and shared support for faculty that require financial investment in order to pursue research successes; Priority will be given to requests for faculty travel to meet with grant program managers to discuss ideas for future proposal submissions; All faculty financial research support requests should be sent to Dr. David Thompson, Special Assistant Vice President for Research, for review and consideration; Each request should be routed via though the appropriate department head and dean for comment and recommendation (in the case of a research center request, the center director will be expected to comment). A form for this purpose is provided for download from this web site.

13 Cross-College Research Grant Program The ORED Cross-College Research grant program is designed to provide faculty members with small grants to assist with their research and in building collaborations across colleges and disciplines. These awards are for $2000 and can be used for small equipment purchases, travel to meet with a program sponsor, purchase of special scholarly tools, or other needs as appropriate. 14 ORED Undergraduate Research Program This program is distinct from and complimentary to other undergraduate research programs at MSU. Only MSU faculty members are eligible to apply to this program. The grants are intended to facilitate research interaction between faculty and undergraduate students. Proposed projects that involve interdisciplinary research should highlight how disciplines will be engaged in the project. Grants will be in the amount of $2,000 each and limited to a period of 12 months (renewable). Faculty members may only apply to either the cross-college program (see above) or the undergraduate research program but not both. A wide range of projects will be considered as long as the budget explicitly supports undergraduate research. Faculty salary is not an allowable budget expense for this program. Each proposal must have signature of approval from the college's Associate Dean for Research. A form for this purpose is provided for download from this web site. Oct. 31 deadline.

15 SEC Faculty Travel Funding from the Southeastern Conference to enhance faculty collaborations that stimulates scholarly initiatives between SEC universities; Faculty from MSU can travel to another SEC campus to exchange ideas; develop grant proposals; conduct research; consult with faculty and/or students; offer lectures or symposia; or engage in whatever activities are agreeable to the visitor and host unit; MSU will select eight faculty members to receive travel grants of $1,250 each for transportation, room, board, etc., to use for travel to another SEC campus. Travel dates for these visits are between Oct. 1, 2016 and June 30, Completed applications must be submitted by 5 p.m. on Aug

18 Proposal Development Office Support unit focused on the pre-award stage of extramural funding reporting to the Office of Sponsored Projects Provides wide-ranging support to faculty and staff across all stages of their grant applications; Conduct funding searches for specific project that researchers wish to pursue; assist in the preparation of competitive proposals by: o reviewing and critiquing proposal drafts o providing descriptive material on MSU resources, o writing sections of proposal where appropriate. PDO staff can also link researchers with others on campus with similar research interests for possible multidisciplinary projects. PDO staff have extensive experience with a broad variety of funding mechanisms, federal agencies, and private sponsors. Presents sessions to faculty and staff that provide information on specific agency or funding programs, enhance proposal development skills, or stimulate the development of multidisciplinary projects.
