4 CONFERENCE HIGHLIGHTS TE ARAHI MAIPI, MC, PRESENTER MĀORI TELEVISION Te Arahi is a kura kaupapa graduate from Huntly who grew up wanting to be a rugby league star. He quickly realised that wasn t going to happen, so his dream shifted to being a sports commentator. For the past ten years he has lived his dream working on some of the biggest sporting events in the country. He is a presenter for Māori TV and also has his own radio show. WETINI MITAI-NGATAI Wetini Mitai-Ngatai is a leading kapa haka expert and cultural entrepreneur. He is best known by New Zealand audiences for his appearance in reality TV program, Kapa Haka: Behind the Faces which followed him and kapa haka group, Te Mātārae I Ōrehu, as they prepared for the 2013 national kapa haka championships. Wetini was born and raised in Te Arawa. His entrepreneurialism was evident from an early age, as a young man, Wetini always aspired to work for himself. By the age of 23, he already owned two fish and chip shops. It was a natural progression for Wetini to bring together his business acumen with his longstanding passion for kapa haka. Wetini s early kapa haka experiences were with Ngāti Rangiwewehi and Tāhourāngi. In 1994 Wetini and Irirangi Tiakiawa Tūhourangi started the group Te Mātārae I Ōrehu. As the leader of the group, Wetini has won the male leadership title at five Matatini Festivals, and Te Mātārae has qualified for the finals every time they have competed, winning the national kapa haka title twice. In 2002 Wetini founded Mitai Maori Village in Rotorua, a Māori cultural performance and tourism attraction at Fairy Springs (Te Puna o Tūhoe), Rotorua. Through Mitai, Wetini wanted to provide employment for family and the wider community. It is now in its tenth year, and employs more than 100 people including thirteen full-time staff. Wetini commutes between New Zealand and Dubai, following the success of initiative Snooze Cube, in partnership with Larry Swan. The company rents unoccupied areas in airports and turns them into hireable sound proof snooze rooms for sleep deprived passengers in transit.

ANAHA HIINI Born and raised in Rotorua, Anaha is of Ngāti Tarāwhai, Ngāti Whakaue and Tūhourangi descent. Anaha attributes much of his success to a passion for the revitalisation and the teaching of the Māori language and its protocols. In his personal opinion, Anaha believes that the Māori language is in serious decline and hopes to contribute to the revival of the language in order for it to be spoken in a native manner comparable to 60 years prior when the language was being spoken by the native speakers of that time. A very proud father to 7 children, Anaha continually strives to be a positive role model for his family and will continue to gain the knowledge and attributes required that will one day see him playing a positive and pivotal role amongst his iwi and amongst Maoridom alike. HENARE JOHNSON Ngāti Manawa, Ngāti Whare, Tūhoe oku iwi. Ngāti Koro te hapū. Painoaiho te marae. Ko Henare ahau. Originally from Murupara, I grew up on the eastside of Christchurch in a place called Aranui. My first job was as a cultural performer for tourists at the age of 15, which I continued to do from high school through to the end of University. In 2004 I began a journey with Tourism New Zealand to help infuse a more natural contemporary reflection of Māori tourism experiences to New Zealand s tourism marketing proposition. In 2009 I joined the Auckland Council, then Tourism Auckland which transitioned to Auckland Tourism Events and Economic Development (ATEED), to assist with growing Auckland s Māori tourism story with in the RWC2011 tournament. In 2014 the role broadened from specifically Māori tourism

8 through to developing initiatives for Auckland s wider Māori commercial opportunities. This opened a secondment in 2016 with Air New Zealand to develop and grow the organisations relationships with the Māori community (socially, culturally, environmentally, and economically). KAWANA WALLACE Kawana is a computer science engineer and tutor at Te Pae. He built a prototype in December last year for visitors to access information offline through their phone app. The next step is to develop an advanced marketable version to be used nationally if the trial is successful. "I want to create real points of interest in real space. It hasn't been done in New Zealand."Wallace said the interactive traveller app would allow people to post points of interests of their journey on social media. "Its kind of augmenting their experience kind of like a guide but you don't give them that information online to search, they have to go out and search. "It's more meaningful if you go out and get it yourself. Investors would be needed to fund the project for Wallace to take it to a national platform.
