All about us Welcome to the YES class of 2018 I spend a large part of my days talking with students, teachers, alumni and entrepreneurs about the impact of YES.

3 All about us Welcome to the YES class of 2018 I spend a large part of my days talking with students, teachers, alumni and entrepreneurs about the impact of YES. Students talk about the problem-solving, creative-communication and leadership skills they develop over the year; teachers enthuse about the power of experiential learning and student engagement; alumni rave about how YES gave them the motivation and belief to start their own businesses; while the New Zealand entrepreneurial and business ecosystems are excited about the authenticity and connectivity that the programme delivers. So, what about you? What will you take from YES 2018? Well, that depends on you. Get stuck in from day one, try new things and don t be afraid to make mistakes. YES is all about taking chances and thinking outside of the box. There is a whole network of support and inspiration that is waiting for you as part of YES and I cannot wait to see what you do with this opportunity. Kia kaha! Over the past 30 years, we have returned over $800 million back to the community, supporting thousands of good causes right around New Zealand. The Lion Foundation Young Enterprise Scheme is one of our flagship programmes and we re proud to partner with Young Enterprise to deliver the YES programme. I have been privileged to attend the judging and awards ceremony and can say from first-hand experience that this programme changes lives it certainly changed mine. 4 Why do yes? YES is your opportunity to set up and run your own business with the support of your school, your community and the YES network. Business is the best way to challenge how things are done, and to make a positive difference in the world about you. There is nobody better qualified than you our rangatahi to understand the changes that need to be made. The range of 21 st century skills that you will pick up through YES will be both life and world-changing. Our 2017 YES students have said that the top skills they learnt included: Problem solving Teamwork and leadership Communication and presentation Critical and creative thinking Decision making, time management and networking Here are some other reasons why we think you should join the YES whānau: Make money Many YES companies post a profit over the course of the year. Additionally, there is $25k in national prize money to be won not to mention lots of regional cash prizes. Scholarships Massey University offers $5k to each member of the National Champions team. In some regions, university scholarships are offered to our Regional Champions from local sponsors. 4 Young Enterprise Scheme

5 Entrepreneurs-in-Action weekend (EIA) hosted by Massey University EIA is a three-day programme that is affectionately known as YES on steroids. In 2018 it will run in Wellington between Friday 29 June Sunday 1 July. Students should apply by Friday 4 May to be selected as one of the 80 students to attend. Flights, accommodation and meals are covered. The weekend will consist of two business challenges, sponsored by Genesis Energy and New Zealand Trade and Enterprise (NZTE). (You will be alerted when applications go live). Overseas trips In October we will take six students (selected from the EIA weekend) on the CBL Insurance Overseas Business trip. The destination will be announced at the beginning of the weekend. We will be making an exciting announcement early in 2018 about more overseas opportunities. Keep an eye on our YES Class of 2018 Facebook group for information. NZ Business Hall of Fame (BHOF) The NZ Business Hall of Fame is the premier business awards in New Zealand and sees the top business leaders celebrating the induction of eight individuals, known as laureates. Each laureate is accompanied at the gala dinner in Auckland by a YES student (one is asked to give the valedictory speech). This is a chance to connect with some outstanding business leaders. Access to great resources During your YES year you will be able to work with great companies such as Xero and MYOB (page 22); Future Leaders Academy (page 20); Storbie (page 23); Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand (page 11); and Joy Business Academy (page 20) all completely free! 5
