4 Workshops Workshops MONDAY, MARCH 31 10:00am 3:00pm 1:00 6:00pm Collegiate Recycling Workshop CRC Council The CRC workshop is an opportunity to hear from fellow colleagues about exciting innovations, new ideas, challenges, and lessons learned in the world of collegiate recycling. The workshop will feature presentations as well as interactive roundtable discussions. This will be followed by lunch and a tour of the UNC-Asheville campus, highlighting features of their recycling and composting programs. Cost: $30 per person. Advanced reservations required as seating will be limited to 25. Workshop and Tour to take place at UNC-A campus. Lunch will be provided. Carolina Plastics Recycling Council Meeting The Carolinas Plastic Recycling Council will be holding a networking meeting addressing plastic material supply and other technical and market issues related to plastics in the two-state region. Cost: $30 per person. Advanced reservations required as seating is limited to 60. TUESDAY, APRIL 1 9:00am 12:00pm Master Composter Workshop This Master Composter Workshop offers training for those interested in facilitating and ultimately presenting a community-based composting education program. Participants will receive 3 hours of training in the science and practice of backyard composting and vermicomposting techniques, trouble-shooting and how to help others to compost through volunteer activities. A CD of all presentations will be made available to all attendees. Cost: $25 per person. Advanced reservations required as seating is limited to 40. Household Hazardous Waste HHW Council Is Household Hazardous Waste in your Zero Waste Plan? NC and SC recycled or properly disposed of over 12 million tons of Household Hazardous Waste last year. This workshop shows you how you can get a program started and improve the one you have! The workshop will concentrate on opportunities to develop safe, compliant and effective strategies for new and existing Household Hazardous Waste Programs. Learn how to develop a program for little-to-no cost utilizing resources you may already have. The workshop will include hands-on exercises regarding the safety and operation of a successful program. Cost: $25 per person. Advanced reservations required as seating will be limited to 40. Overcoming Litter Abatement Challenges KAB Council/KNCB If you are looking to find workable solutions to enhance your partnership connections and maximize litter prevention program success, this workshop is for you. Although the workshop is open to all CRA Conference attendees, it will offer specific KAB reporting requirements using Re-Trac, grant opportunities and program enhancements. This portion will be provided by a KAB national affiliate trainer. Other topics will be covered by peer professionals offering hands-on experience. Cost: None. 5 Tours Sierra Nevada Tours MONDAY, MARCH 31 1:30 5:30pm At Sierra Nevada Brewing Co., sustainability means recognizing the impacts associated with our operations and making a conscious effort to reduce them. Blue Ridge Biofuels 1:00 3:30pm Blue Ridge Biofuels produces and distributes biodiesel for Western North Carolina and the Southeast bulk market. We supply biodiesel to public pumps in the greater Asheville region, deliver bulk on and off road biodiesel, provide Bioheat as a replacement to heating oil, and provide a used cooking oil collection service to restaurants in North Carolina, South Carolina, and Tennessee. Biodiesel is a cleanburning renewable alternative to petroleum diesel fuel. It also provides superior mechanical benefits and extends engine life. Cost: $20 per person. Advanced reservations required as tour is limited to 20. 2:00 4:30pm Danny s Dumpsters & Curbside Management This tour will actually offer two stops for attendees. Our first stop will be to Danny s Dumpsters. Danny s Dumpsters operates a unique compost processing facility in Asheville using in-vessel containers with forced aeration. The design speeds up the composting process and reduces the man-power needed for production. The second stop on the tour will be Curbside Waste Management. Curbside Management s sole business is the collection, processing and marketing of recyclable materials. CMI (widely known as Curbie) began service in March 1991 as a private recycling collection company serving Asheville-area residents. CMI presently operates a fleet of 10 vehicles and employs a work force of 40. In August 2003, CMI opened its Material Recovery Facility where we process all of the recycling material. CMI is currently processing and shipping in excess of 1000 tons of material per month. CMI processes material from Buncombe, Henderson, Madison, Transylvania, and Yancey counties. 6 Sessions General TUESDAY, APRIL 1 1:30 2:45pm Recycling Economics and Markets What Does the Future Hold How is the recycling economy doing? Can it support continued growth in material collection? What do recycling markets look like for the short and long term? This session will open the CRA Conference with a 30,000 foot view of the recycling marketplace and what is in store for recyclable commodities. WEDNESDAY, APRIL 2 9:00 10:15am Business Leaders In Recycling and Zero Waste Companies in the Carolinas are among the leaders in both recycling and zero waste. Two in the forefront are Unifi and Sierra Nevada, each striving to improve recycling and to eliminate their plants dependence on landfills. The two firms will share the story of their commitment to positive action against waste on multiple fronts. THURSDAY, APRIL 3 2:15 3:30pm Recycling Policy and Legislation Legislative initiatives remain a key potential strategy to increase material recovery, but what policies are the most appropriate and effective? Are new laws needed and what are the prospects for new recycling legislation? A leading North Carolina representative will discuss the legislative process and proponents of two different approaches will share their views. 6 General

7 Sessions TUESDAY, APRIL 1 3:00 4:30pm 1 Organics Collection Things are picking up for food waste collection in NC this session will outline new and proven collection techniques, from curbside, drop off at convenience centers, and commercial collection to diverting food to feed people. 2 Reaching the Masses Education That Works What is the best way to get your recycling message out? Find out in this session where a panel of outreach pros and audience members will collectively share tactics that have worked well, and what was a bust. You ll walk out of this session with new, ready-to-use marketing practices that have a proven track record in other communities. 3 Curbside Recycling Collection Tools and BMPs This session will provide an overview and discussion of curbside recycling Best Management Practices and the tools being used to maximize collection system efficiency. Learn how new technology is improving program performance, how education and outreach helps a recycling program maintain its edge, and how top performing programs are functioning in the Carolinas. 4 Recycling at Healthcare Facilities Beyond curbside type materials, what kinds of materials can be recycled from healthcare institutions and how? This session will address setting up a program, what materials to take, what education materials are most useful, how to keep things confidential, and what should you know about HIPPA, JCAHO & NFPA. You will also receive resources that will help you learn even more. 7

8 Sessions WEDNESDAY, APRIL 2 10:45am 12:15pm 5 Taking on the #3-#7 Plastic Challenge This session will focus on addressing markets and uses for non-bottle container materials now commonly collected in a growing number of community recycling programs. The widening of the collection mix has occurred at the same time the Chinese Green Fence has restricted plastics exports, providing an opportunity for the development of domestic uses for the material. The panelists in this session will explore all the angles on the #3-#7 issue. 6 Source Reduction/Reuse Source reduction and reuse practices are beneficial for businesses, create jobs and resources for charitable organizations and decrease our need for natural resources. Here we ll take a light approach and highlight some stellar programs. Share your practices with us too, and leave with some useful tools. 7 Commercial/Institutional Recycling During this panel discussion, speakers will have the opportunity to showcase their business or institution s recycling efforts onsite through case studies completed at their facilities. A wide variety of institutions will be highlighted, ranging from industrial facilities to educational organizations. 8 Multi-family Recycling This session will feature a panel of local governments who collect or oversee the collection of multi-family recycling programs. Speakers will provide an overview and discussion of different program collection practices, important metrics (i.e. average one cart per 7 units), and the pros and cons of using carts vs. FEL dumpsters. The session will also explore how local governments are educating and incentivizing multi-family residents and getting property management buy-in. 1:15 2:45pm 9 Expanding the Plastics Mix Beyond the traditional household containers, what additional plastics could be diverted from disposal and successfully marketed? This session will cover a range of kinds of plastics, providing insights on how to collect and manage the materials. Attendees will learn about new opportunities to recycle resins not normally targeted in local recycling programs. 10 National Recycling Outreach Initiatives This session will feature national recycling initiatives and resources that you can deploy in your community to boost recycling and community engagement. You will learn about Keep America Beautiful s I Want To Be Recycled campaign, the Sustainable Packaging Coalition s How2Recycle label, Carton Council resources, and the Local Search Association s Yellow Pages Opt Out tools. 11 Making the Most of Public Drop-off Recycling Local government recycling drop-off sites/convenience centers are transitioning to Single Stream, using compactors to improve efficiencies, and are creating Super Centers to take recovery well beyond cans and bottles. What s driving these changes, what s working best and what s next? 12 Organics Composting Ever wondered how composting facilities handle and process all that food waste? After they compost all your yard debris, manure and food waste into humus (compost) now what? This session will give you an overview of composting technologies that are being used here in NC and the amazing things (markets) that can be done with compost. 8

9 Sessions THURSDAY, APRIL 3 9:00 10:30am 13 Non-Traditional Materials Are you considering adding some non-traditional recyclable materials such as carpet, textiles, Fluorescent bulbs, or electronics to your collection programs? Hear the details from responsible markets that want these materials and communities that are operating successful programs. 14 Professional Skills Training Two of the most important skills a recycling coordinator can have are the ability to justify programs and to market those programs effectively. This session will focus on increasing participants skill and understanding of these distinct topics. B.Y.O.B. (Bring Your Own Budget) will provide an instructor-lead full cost accounting exercise; get the tools you need to calculate program costs using your own numbers (sample budgets will also be provided). Then learn how to speak the language of graphic design, with OMG, What s a PNG? where you can ask your burning question about graphic design, and learn to get what you want from your graphic designer. 17 C&D Recycling Markets and Trends What is the current state of C&D recovery in the Carolinas? What can be done with the materials? This session will cover the range of collection and processing options for C&D materials. A panel of market experts will focus on key market trends for C&D materials, including asphalt shingles, wood, carpet, drywall, and concrete/brick and block. Attendees will learn what materials to target and key strategies for developing a C&D recycling program or enterprise. 18 Public Space Recycling What was a trend has become a movement. Recycling bins are popping up next to trash cans on sidewalks, festivals, parks, beaches, athletic fields and other public spaces. Attend this session to learn the steps to make public space recycling work right the first time with Keep America Beautiful s Top 10 Tips Guide and an interactive session where you determine why bins may have failed, identify ways to correct issues, and find good practices to implement. 15 Business of Recycling The continued growth of the recycling industry will rely heavily on the success of all types and sizes of recycling businesses. This jam-packed session will show how investing in recycling projects provides significant economic benefits. In addition, you will hear about two Eco-Industrial Parks in the Carolinas including ReVenture Park, in the Charlotte area which has been recognized as the largest project of its type in the U.S., and the BioBerkley Project in Berkeley County, South Carolina. You will also hear about debt and equity financing from an investor/lender and a client whose greasetrap waste processing facility has become a profitable business model. 16 Emerging 10:45am 12:15pm Technologies in the Waste and Recycling Industry This panel discussion will focus on emerging technologies the waste and recycling industry is seeing in the Carolinas. Technologies discussed will explore diversion and reuse processes for unique waste streams and examine fleet changes that save money and are better for the environment. 19 MRF Examination and Review This session will examine the important role that MRFs play in the modern recycling system. Speakers will address the workings of a modern MRF, provide a detailed look at optical sorting and how this technology is transforming processing, an examination of the MRF system in North Carolina and the driving forces behind the continued evolution of modern MRFs. 20 Data Tracking & Other Tools: ReTRAC Training Learn how to use the many powerful features available in a Re-TRAC Connect FREE Account. Replace frustrating spreadsheets with a fully configurable recycling and waste diversion tracking tool. Reduce phone inquiries and promote responsible material management by contributing to reuse and recycling web directories. 12 The Carolina Recycling Association s 24th Annual Awards Annual Awards Call for Award Nominations The Carolina Recycling Association (CRA) is pleased to present this Call for Nominations for the 2014 Annual Awards Ceremony to be held during the CRA Conference on April 2nd, 2014 at the The Omni Grove Park Inn in Asheville, NC. Each year, CRA proudly honors the best programs, projects, and individuals for outstanding achievement and commitment to the mission of the CRA. Nominees and winners will be recognized during the Awards Ceremony. A program or individual may not receive more than one award per year. If a program or individual wishes to apply in or for more than one category, they must submit a completed application for each category and may only apply for up to three categories. Self-nominations are acceptable and encouraged. In previous years we have awarded one candidate from each state (NC & SC), however there will now be only one award presented for each category. 15 2014 CRA Golf Classic Golf Classic This year s Annual Golf Tournament will be played on the Omni Grove Park Inn s historic course. This course was designed by Donald Ross and has played host to numerous PGA Tour events.
