I extend my heartfelt greetings and good wishes to all the readers, well wishers and our valuable customers! Our readers have been encouraging us with various thoughts and ideas that have taken us a step closer to our customers. However, we have intentionally not removed the protective coverings of floorings in the lobby area to avoid damages during shifting and false ceiling works. The common facilities like swimming pool and gym will not be functional for the next 70 days due to the landscaping activities undertaken by the architect. 2 Happy New Year 2013 Kerala buzz.. Ernakulam declared as India s first financially-inclusive district RBI Governor Mr. D. Subbarao declared Ernakulam as the first district in the country to achieve total and meaningful financial inclusion. Ernakulam was the first district in the country to achieve 100% family planning in 1970s. In 1990, Ernakulam was declared the first district to have 100% literacy. Today is the third step in the process Ernakulam is becoming the first district in the country to achieve 100% financially inclusion, Subbarao announced at a function attended by chief minister Oommen Chandy, Finance Minister K.M. Mani and Nandan Nilekani, Chairman of Unique Identification Authority of India. 10,000 visitors at Kochi Biennale in first 3 days The first three days of the Kochi - Muziris Biennale registered roughly 10,000 footfalls with a chunk of them at the Aspinwall House in Fort Kochi, according to organisers of the three-month art bonanza. Subbarao said the district, with a population of 32 lakh, has 37 lakh savings bank accounts. Kerala ideal choice for energy conservation projects Education Minister Mr. P.K. Abdu Rabb has said that Kerala was the ideal choice as location for energy conservation projects and for testing renewable energy sources, the use of which was on the increase in the State. Inaugurating an international conference on Green Technologies, organised jointly by the Mar Baselios College of Engineering and Technology; University of Dayton, USA; and the India chapter of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), Mr. Rabb said there was a need of increased focus, research and development on reducing greenhouse emissions. Newer technologies had to evolve and governments should pursue policies that stressed on low carbon emissions, he said. A platform for talks The three-day conference aims at providing a forum for discussing innovative energy conserving designs in the backdrop of climate change and the rising need for a global green technological transformation within a short time frame. There will be technical programmes, panel discussions and tutorials as well with the sessions categorised into five tracks Green Energy, Green Electron Devices and Green Communication, Green Computing and IT, Green Buildings, and Green Mechanical Systems. Thursday alone recorded more than 3,000 footfalls. Going by the initial indication, we should be hitting the originally estimated eight lakh visitors by the end of the Biennale (on March 13 next year), a key functionary with the Kochi Biennale foundation said. The sea-facing Aspinwall House, the hub of the extravaganza, has been attracting the maximum visitors, followed by the Pepper House in the neighborhood, he said. The long queue of cars on the side of the road adjoining the Aspinwall is one suggestion. Towards evening, there is a surge in the crowd. Cochin airport to use solar power for its grid Cochin International Airport is set to become the first airport in the country to use solar power for running its utility grid system. The solar panel manufacturing company would be installing a 100 kwp solar power facility at the airport situated at Nedumbassery in Cochin. The company would design, install and commission the solar photo-voltaic (PV) power system consisting of mounted solar panels. The panels would generate DC electric power, which unlike the general practice, would not be fed directly into the utility grid, Instead, inverters would convert the direct current output from the solar array into a grid-compliant AC voltage which will feed it into the utility grid system to be used for lighting in the terminal building. Power thus generated would be connected with low transmission voltage for local and grid usage. The proposed energy production would be at an estimated 148 MWh per year with a capacity of 100 kilowatts-peak (kwp). The energy capacity of each PV module would reach up to Wp. 2-3
