2013 / 2014 Kent Engagement Group Tenants Training Programme Kent Housing Group The Voice of Housing in Kent
Introduction: The Kent Engagement Group (KEG) is a sub group of the Kent Housing Group (KHG) which represents all local authorities and many housing associations in Kent. The KEG has pooled funding to develop a tenants training programme for all Kent tenants. The courses are going to be delivered by a range of trainers and all tenants will receive a certificate upon completion. The majority of courses are one full day, with timings and hosts confirmed in the brochure. Refreshments will be provided at all courses, childcare costs and travel arrangements will need to be agreed and managed with a tenant s specific landlord. Kent Engagement Group 2013 / 2014 page 2

Paed First Aid Level 2 This level certified course provides theoretical and practical training in First Aid techniques that are specific to infants and children to the onset of puberty. Learners will become familiar with the role of the paediatric first aider and be able to assess and react appropriately to an emergency situation including being able to provide first aid for a child and an infant who; is unresponsive, choking, suffering from shock, wounded or bleeding, fractures, head, neck or back injury, poisoning, bitten or stung, or has sustained an electric shock. The maximum number of delegates is 12 and the course will run from 9.15am until 4.30pm on day one and then from 9.15am until 12.30pm on day two. 6th & 7th June th & 11th September th & 7th February 2014 Social Media Training This course aims to provide tenants with a greater understanding of how social media can be used to develop the work of their resident groups. Using social media can help with residents work including encouraging more tenants to participate, organise an event or to launch a new campaign. This course is a must for tenants who are looking to explore more ways to use social media tools such as Twitter, Facebook and You Tube. A basic knowledge of IT would be useful but is not essential to take part on this course. 26th June 2013 The maximum number of delegates is 16 and the course will run from 10am until 3pm. Food Hygiene Level 2 Do you run a lunch club, help out at a summer bbq or are you involved in preparing food for others in your community? If you answer yes to any of these questions then this is the course for you. This course will focus on the importance of food safety and knowledge of the systems, techniques and procedures, it will also focus on the understanding of how to control food safety risks these include personal hygiene, food storage, cooking and handling. The course will also provide tenants with the confidence and expertise to safely deliver quality food to those they are serving. The maximum number of delegates is 20 and the course will run from 9.30am until 4.30pm. 28th June th September 2013 Kent Engagement Group 2013 / 2014 page 4
CSCS Card If you are thinking about venturing into the construction industry, it is important that you consider getting yourself a CSCS card. You are probably wondering why do you need a CSCS card? Well, one of the main reasons why you should get yourself one is that, it will better your chances of securing a job at construction sites. The main benefit to the construction industry is that the process of obtaining this card requires construction workers to undergo a test. This is an opportunity for the workers themselves to learn about Health and Safety in order to reduce the possibility of a work related injury. Construction Site Certificate of Safety! The maximum number of delegates is 10 per day, with each session running for two hours, delegates to be allocated a time slot to attend. 9th July th October 2013 Conflict Resolution Conflict isn t necessarily bad; it can sometimes be constructive, especially when people with different views work together to agree a new position or way of thinking that they can all agree on. Conflict can sometimes be destructive, when a difference of opinion can lead to a personal attack, sniping, exclusion, silence, gossip and sometimes much worse when violence or other forms of abuse take place. When a situation gets out of control it can lead to a negative effect on all those involved, with the original conflict blown out of proportion. This course will help tenants learn how to manage a conflict situation in a positive way and will provide tenants with skills and knowledge to avoid a negative outcome. 17th July 2013 The maximum number of delegates is 20 and the course will run from 9.30am until 4.00pm. Bid Writing Training Funding is an important part of any work undertaken by tenant or community groups, all groups will need to have funding to set up projects for example. Tenants who are part of a group working in a community should not have to use their own money to ensure that the work of the group is successful. There are many ways to get income for a group to use, especially when funding from your landlord or the government is not always available. This training session will give tenants the skills and knowledge to develop tools to make effective funding bids, including how to read the form and criteria correctly to get the desired result. The trainer will give tenants the skills to identify the key points to remember and provide clear tips for successful bidding. 18th September 2013 The max number of delegates is 16 and the course will run from 10am until 3pm. Kent Engagement Group 2013 / 2014 page 5
Chairing and Committee Skills This course will help you to understand the roles and expectations of the Chair, officers and other committee members to get the most out of your meetings. This course is for tenants who are looking to increase existing knowledge and those who are new to this area of tenant engagement. 9th July 2013 The maximum number of delegates is 16 and the course will run from 10am until 3pm. 24th September 2013 How to book a place on a course: If you would like to book a place on one of the courses please complete the electronic booking form, available to download from the Kent Housing Group website, please click on the KEG Training Programme tab on the left hand side of the screen or use the following link Please send the completed booking form to rebecca.smith@ashford.gov.uk Once the form is received a confirmation of booking will be sent back to you, along with course details including the venue and timings.
