1 EU DIRECTIVES AND EVIDENCE EU Directives Evidence of experience in specific areas of care as in EU regulations must be demonstrated by the end of the overall programme. Experience from all placements can be recorded and accumulated as evidence to demonstrate that you have met the EU requirements for registration as a nurse with the NMC. Details of where in the programme you will normally be expected to gain these experiences are given, however aspects of other areas of care can often happen in another designated area. For example, in your surgical placement you may experience caring for someone with a learning disability, or in your chronic illness placement you might experience caring for someone with a mental health problem. The areas of clinical instruction required by the EU are: Nursing in relation to: General and specialist medicine (UK: Adult nursing, medical) General and specialist surgical (UK: Adult nursing, surgical) Child care and paediatrics (UK: Child Health) Maternity care (UK: Maternal and Infant Health) Mental Health and psychiatry (UK: Mental Health & Wellbeing) Care of the old and geriatrics (UK: Care of Older people) Home Nursing (UK: Community Nursing) (NMC 2010, page 96) Completion of these requirements will be monitored by the relevant course or year organisers (see summary sheet page 18) and ultimately the Director of the Undergraduate programme and the External Examiner. Types of Evidence Evidence of experience should be recorded under each area. Evidence might include those items listed below and should demonstrate learning which is specific to yourself and your own experiences. You do not need to list lectures, clinical skills, practical sessions or tutorials that form part of the set programme. It is expected that evidence will be collated by recording practice placement experiences, detailing any associated visits that demonstrate relevant experience. The clinical record form must be signed by either the placement mentor or a supervisor during a visit. The clinical record form for a placement or visit is given on page 14. Completed clinical record forms should be inserted into the relevant areas and cross referencing to a previously completed form for the address, phone number and questions 1 to 3 is acceptable. Cross referencing from the evidence in other OAR sections is also acceptable. Other Sources of Evidence These might include: Seminar presentations Scenario or Problem based cases
2 Posters or displays Reflective accounts on reading or teaching in the programme Reflective writing about specific clients Attendance at conferences or educational visits Record of visits to a family Record of visits to childbearing woman Neighbourhood study Reflective Accounts and records of other sources of evidence can be added in their entirety or can be summarised in the evidence portfolio. When documenting and communicating evidence, confidentiality must be maintained at all times. Sufficient personal details must be altered to protect the identification of patients and clients and potentially staff too. 2
