3 Hamburg The Free and Hanseatic City of Hamburg is located on the River Elbe. Hamburg is culturally and commercially the centre of all of Northern Germany. It is one of the sixteen states of the federation and is the second largest city in Germany with 1.7 million inhabitants. The metropolitan region consists of 3.5 million people for whom Hamburg is the shopping and cultural metropolis. Hamburg has always been an open-minded commercial centre, something that has determined the mentality of the people living here. The characteristic individuality of Hamburg has been proudly maintained by its people so that the city s culture has retained its uniqueness and has not succumbed to the general trend of standardization. Hamburg, nonetheless, is a cosmopolitan city in its outlook. The city has dealings with a large number of nations, and it has more consulates than any other city in the world except New York. Shipping and trade have been Hamburg s lifeblood for centuries. Not surprisingly, its harbour has remained the city s most important feature. Among Hamburg s many other facets are a network of canals (Hamburg boasts 2302 bridges, more than the total of all bridges that Venice and Amsterdam have to offer), lakes, parks, and verdant suburbs with gracious houses. 14% of the city is made up of green and recreation areas. It has a vibrant cultural life, elegant shopping arcades and richly endowed museums. These are among the attractions that have contributed to a growing tourist industry. Although it was badly damaged during World War II, Hamburg has succeeded in maintaining a sense of old-world grace alongside its thriving commercial life. The University Of Hamburg The roots of the University date back to the beginning of the 17th century. Presently, with approximately 38,500 students, it ranges fifth in size among the institutions of higher learning in the Federal Republic of Germany. Corresponding to Hamburg s view of itself as the gateway to the world the University with its diversity and traditions of subjects and educational offerings, sees itself as the gateway to the world of knowledge. It has about 890 professors engaged in teaching and research, as well as an additional full-time academic staff numbering 2,700. The University is spread over 270 buildings. The centre of the University is its campus at Von-Melle-Park, which is situated close to the lake in the heart of Hamburg, the Außenalster, and which adjoins parts of the district of Hamburg-Eimsbüttel. 5 European Educational Research Association The European Educational Research Association (EERA) was founded in Its aim is to promote educational research in Europe through fostering cooperation between European associations and institutes of educational research, and international government organizations. The Post-Graduate Network within EERA aims to: provide support on issues such as working conditions, contract, mobility and career development; promote collaborative work including presentations, publications, teaching materials (where appropriate) and European research bids; strengthen research methodology in education. The Post-Graduate Network organizes the annual Pre-Conference at ECER which is free of charge. Membership of the Post-Graduate Network is also free. It is open to anyone who has registered for or has completed a Ph.D. or its equivalent within the last 6 years. Its main strength lies in the support it offers to new researchers by providing a space for discussion and collaboration with peers across Europe. An list is available to enable members to discuss research issues, exchange ideas and share information. The address is: EERA.Postgrad@pedagog.lu.se Full-time Post-Graduate students who wish to attend the Main Conference can get a 50% reduction in the fee so long as they send a letter to the EERA Office from their supervisor verifying their status as full-time Post-Graduate research students. Visit the EERA website at if you wish to learn more about EERA and its Post-Graduate Network. EERA Member Associations The Executive Council of EERA consists of national associations for educational research or, if the country does not have a national association, a prominent research institute. 7 ECER Hamburg 2003 Main conference September 2003 Post-Graduate and New Researchers Pre- Conference September 2003 Call for Proposals: Deadline for Proposals: 14 March 2003 No late proposals will be considered. Information for contributors A. Criteria for Review Proposals for contributions are welcome from all fields of educational research. The criteria used in reviewing each proposal will be as follows: it should be directly related to a topic of educational interest; it should involve systematic enquiry of an empirical or analytic nature and should make reference to a theoretical framework; the background, method, results and implications should be set out clearly in a manner which is accessible to an international audience; it should take account of the European and/or international context; and it should help a European dialogue to develop by reference, for example, to current European policies or intellectual and educational traditions. B. Selecting a Network Decide first of all whether you wish your presentation to be given at the Pre-Conference or the Main Conference. Pre-Conference: There is a place on the Proposal Form for you to indicate that you intend to present at the Pre-Conference. Main conference: Identify the EERA Network which is the best fit for your proposal. Only if no such network exists, should the proposal be submitted without a network having first been identified by you. Also, if possible, please identify a second choice of network (this may help us with the reviewing process). Page 7

8 C. Maximum Number of Proposals For each person, a maximum of two proposals may be submitted in which the person is named as an author. D. Language of the Conference The full paper and presentation can be in English or German, however the abstract and the Proposal Form must be in English. Please bear in mind when presenting a paper that you are speaking to an international audience, the majority of whom may not be familiar with the education system in your own country. Therefore avoid the use of acronyms and do not use expressions which describe aspects of your education system (e.g. Key Stage 1, AS Level) without explanation. Guidance on making an effective presentation for an international audience can be found on the EERA website at E. Format of Presentations There is a choice of five formats: Paper, Poster, Round Table, Research Workshop and Symposium. Paper, Poster, Research Workshop and Round Table formats are intended for a single presentation by one person or a small group. The Symposium format is intended for a set of related presentations. Paper A paper is proposed and submitted by one person. Up to three other people can be named as co-authors in the proposal. The proposer must indicate on the Proposal Form which of the named authors will be presenting the paper. All those attending must register for the Main Conference or Pre- Conference. The proposer is responsible for communicating with any co-authors and with the EERA Office about the proposal. The timing is normally minutes for presentation, then 5 10 minutes for questions from the audience. Where possible, EERA will schedule the paper with two others on a similar theme within a 90 minute session. EERA will allocate a chairperson to help with timing and discussion. The proposer is responsible for communicating with any co-authors and with the EERA Office about the proposal. Normally one hour is scheduled to enable each contributor to speak for 5 10 minutes, then there is discussion. Sometimes most of the time is given over to discussion. The session is managed by the contributors. Symposium A symposium consists of at least three linked papers chosen to demonstrate a range of perspectives or variety of approaches. At least three countries should be represented amongst the contributors. It normally lasts 90 minutes, but can extend beyond this depending on the number of papers.
