The plan outlines the strategy and actions for improving MIMT s external communication and profiling. Input from Board issues 44/09 and 46/09 is integrated. The annual Work Plan for the individual sub-projects will reflect the action list in section 4 below. Please see Appendix A for RCN s feedback related to MIMT s external communication and profiling. MIMT is a Centre for Research-based Innovation (CRI) granted by the Research Council of Norway (RCN) for the period April 16, 2007 to April 15, It is a prioritised goal to maintain and develop MIMT as an innovation network beyond the funding period granted by RCN as decided in the Action Plan [1] which was approved by the Board as issue 11/11. MIMT s communication strategy will support the overall strategy [1] also for the period after First version to be presented to the Board August 24, Goal should be branded as an innovation network within instrumentation and measurement science at a national and international level. 2

4 5 International scientific communication and profiling 5.1 Coordinated with University of Bergen Scientific / research journals and conferences are characterised by international peer review of submitted contributions. Seminars and workshops have a lower threshold as only an abstract needs to be submitted. There is a variety of major international journals and conferences where results from the Michelsen Centre may be submitted. The choice of journal should be left to the individual authors. MIMT will encourage international publishing and thereby international promotion of the Michelsen Centre. Publishing plans should be included in the sub-projects annual Work Plan. All peer-reviewed publishing from CMR, UoB, and BUC originating from or associated with MIMT should list MIMT as secondary affiliation. o This should include also publishing from PhD-students or postdocs associated to MIMT o This should include all publishing involving Professor IIs funded by MIMT Other types of publishing and dissemination should mention MIMT if the work originates from MIMT activities. MIMT should be listed as host / secondary affiliation in communication with visiting or guest researcher wholly or partially funded by MIMT. This applies to researchers visiting Bergen and to MIMT personnel visiting other organisations MIMT should be listed as secondary affiliation when: o Individuals participate in conference committees related to MIMT s application areas. o Individuals participate in international forum related to MIMT s application areas. Examples: o ICES (International Council for the Exploration of the Seas) o The European Micro Nano Broker Platform (EU MNST Broker) MIMT will continue to coordinate its international strategy with the international network and long-term strategy for research exchange and personnel mobility for the relevant parts of UoB (Department of Physics and Technology, Department of Chemistry, Department of Biology, Department of Geophysics). CMR will look into creating international links via Advisor positions or similar arrangements [1] 4

5 6 Industrial communication and profiling There are both local/regional, national, and international arenas which offer communication channels and profiling opportunities. Industry input on preferred events will be sought. MIMT conference and seminar initiatives Co-organising seminars and workshops MIMT has co-organised 7 seminars and workshops and has committed for an eigth co-organised seminar in 2011, an average of almost 3 per year which should be the future target Annual technology gap conference under development A technology gap conference is under planning and development by MIMT, details are outlined in [6]. It is planned as a 1-day event in Q and to be extended to 3 days in This conference will develop into a a significant part of the post-2014 strategy [1]. Atle Markussen from RCN s local branch should be invited to participate in the preparations MIMT workshops and seminars MIMT has held or co-sponsored 16 seminars and workshops during the two years [8]. So far in 2011, four more are under planning The majority of these events have been open to the general audience, obviously mostly of interest for a scientific and industrial audience. The line of seminars and workshops will be continued, more details can be found in [7] Industry fora The Centre should also be visible in fora like OG Stimulate white papers and similar dissemination Efforts to identify success stories suitable for dissemination will be made with each sub-project. External communication and dissemination of complex technological innovations are challenging. Professional training and guidance may ease the process and lower the threshold. 5

6 : Has offered and will offer annual half-day training sessions in presentation techniques aimed at PhD students and postdocs Will promote its identity by stimulating white papers o White papers are complementary to the running technology projects which currently are in focus on the web site by focussing on the application and / or on summarising a longer period of research o White papers are useful for the industry partners both relative to customers and internal to the partner organisation in order to make the centre more visible o In collaboration with FACE (CRI) seek to offer annual two-day seminar in presentation and authoring of white papers in cooperation with the Centre for Innovation-based Research FACE and Bergen School of Measurement Science. The participants will be required to author a white paper during / after the seminar. 6.3 MIMT Newsletter A quarterly newsletter will be distributed both internally and externally, the latter also as a part of the recruitment purposes which are detailed in [5]. See Appendix B for guidelines how to identify success stories and for newsletter template. 6.4 MIMT Flyer Flyer with highlights and 1-2 main stories which form also part of the contents of a recruitement ppt: CO2 sensor technology development Oil related project Development of new projects Ready for NSFMWS on October Michelsen prize in instrumentation and measurement science The Board agreed in 2010 in the concept of establishing a Michelsen prize in instrumentation and measurement science as a profiling of MIMT. 7 The winner shall author a white paper that will be distributed together with the press release 6.6 MIMT Industry Courses Industry courses offer a good communication channel towards the industry as well as a future funding of MIMT post The courses are both way of sharing MIMT's competency with a wider community, to strengthen MIMT's profile and to make more potential associated partners aware of the possibilities offered by MIMT. MIMT launched its first industry course in November 2010 which was well received by the participating industry representatives. A second course type was added to the programme in Spring The ambition is to run each course twice a year and to add a third course type in Autumn It is realistic to reach (accumulated ) break-even by This may become a valuable source of funding for MIMT's general activities after General dissemination and profiling This is aimed at a wider audience with an interest in technology with a potential social impact. Special efforts must be made to lower the threshold represented by less specialised technological knowledge, see section 6.2 above. 7.1 Web fora The number of visits has almost doubled first half of 2011 as shown by the figure below, mostly due to advertising of workshops and seminars together with advertising and registration for industry courses. 7

8 Additional increase in the number of visits will be achieved by making the website more dynamic: Add texts linked to from newsletters Introduce calendar for events in the Michelsencentre External fora (already one occasion) The concept is based on an interview by a journalist from and is a good exercise in dissemination. The web story must be read and approved by the related partners prior to publishing. News websites and other websites (uib.no, bt.no, one can advertise or popularize science at or physicsworld.com). What about writing a wikipedia article about MIMT? Social web fora The use of social media like Facebook and Twitter was discussed as Board issue 28 / 09 and CMR s Communication Manager Gunn Janne Myrseth (CMR) was consulted: CMR has evaluated these media. The conclusion was that they require frequent update on a daily basis in order to be vital. CMR has decided not to go online. MIMT has adopted the same view. 7.2 Annual event Forskningsdagene MIMT contributed to Forskningsdagene 2010 [10] in Bergen. This should be done on an annual basis as the direct exposure to the technologically curious public is high. 8
