1 LONDON & SOUTH EAST BOARD ROLE DESCRIPTIONS 2015 Board Composition Each Board has a Chair and up to 11 other members. Chair The Chair is appointed from amongst CMI, IC and WiM members who have expressed an interest in the role. The Chair has an automatic seat on the Regional/ Devolved Nation Advisory Committee (RDNAC), reporting through directly to the CMI Board of Trustees. Candidates for Chair roles are interviewed by a panel including a member of the Board of Trustees, a current Regional Board Chair, the Director of Member Engagement, and the Institute Secretary. Board Members Board member vacancies are also filled by appointment. Vacancies are filled through an interview process involving the Regional Board Chair (or Deputy). This approach ensures that candidates are a good match with the existing Board members and will bring onto the Board the additional expertise needed. Role and responsibilities The key role and responsibility of the Regional/Devolved Nation Boards is to ensure that plans are put in place to deliver at local level the overarching strategies for CMI. As such each Board will: contribute to the effective implementation of the Institute s strategic objectives forge relationships with key stakeholders and potential partners and influencers ensure regular local activity is undertaken in support of membership engagement The Boards oversee and are accountable for the funding provided for their activities and business development and engagement strategies. Each Board will also establish such member Networks as are appropriate to meet the needs of local members. 1
2 Commitment Each Board is expected to meet face to face at least once per quarter (4 times per year); however, Boards can decide to meet more frequently throughout the year, depending on the level of activity/ priorities etc. Some meetings may be held virtually. Although time commitments may vary for each Board member (depending on activity levels), it is anticipated that members should expect to commit, on average, at least 8 hours of volunteering time per month. 3 1. Chair Requirements The Chair is appointed for a term of two years. The Chair also sits on the Regional/Devolved Nation Advisory Committee act as the principal representative of the Institute locally and as chair for Board meetings oversee the planning of a programme of activity for each financial year; ensure the submission of an annual Operating Plan lead the team and ensure that the Board works effectively towards the strategic objectives ensure there is effective and consistent communication channels in place from the Board to the Member Engagement Team Share and disseminate any key messages from the RDNAC to the Board brief new Board members on their individual role and responsibilities 2. Women in Management Champion between permanent staff of CMI and the membership in the region. With a delegated budget each year the Board pursues tangible deliverables to support the Institutes goals and the needs of its members. Must be a WiM network member to work with the Networks Champion to co-ordinate the WiM events calendar to support regional contribution to national networks to encourage relationships between regional and national networks to develop employer and learning organisation engagement with WiM to form part of the team assisting with the preparation of the annual Operating Plan to act as conduit to/from the WiM Advisory Committee and as required, by rotation, serve for a two year term as a member of the WiM Advisory Committee. 3

Institute of Consulting Champion Must be a IC network member Promote the strategy of the IC Keep the Board informed on IC strategy and in particular: the Key Messages from by the ICAC (Institute of Consulting Advisory Committee) progress in the creation of the Chartered Management Consultant qualification. Feedback to the ICAC from the Board Support the IC Regional Network and in particular: present its proposals to the Board be a channel for the Board into the Networks Support Team monitor the budget of IC assist in finding volunteers for the IC Committee. If possible, serve on the IC L&SE Committee Attend national meetings of the IC Champions Ideally, be a member of the ICAC Promote, within CMI, IC events open to CMI members in general Promote joint IC/WiM/CMI events Promote the Certified Management Consultant qualification. 4. Communications Champion ( and offline media) to co-ordinate Regional Board contact with media organisations in the local area to be aware of the content of CMI News Releases and summarise to the Regional Board to liaise with the Regional Board and the CMI PR team in the promotion and reporting of regional (and if appropriate National) events to local media 4
5 to assist the Regional Board Chair(s) as a point of contact and local spokesperson for local media to co-ordinate content for the Regional Board newsletters via the Member Engagement Team to liaise with the network, education providers and event champions as appropriate this role can be supported by a Communications Working Group made of experienced board and non-board members to form part of the team assisting with the preparation of the annual Operating plan 5. Communications Champion (digital and social media) to liaise with the Regional Board and the CMI PR team in the promotion and reporting of regional (and if appropriate National) events through digital and social media to assist the Regional Board Chair(s) as a point of contact and local spokesperson for digital and social media to liaise with the network, education providers and event champions as appropriate to liaise with the Member Engagement Team to ensure the Regional Board web page is up to date and accurate to act as the point of contact for member requests for new digital capabilities to ensure Regional Board social media presence and content is vibrant and engaging, as well as supportive of the agreed regional strategy to track the activity and effectiveness of digital channels in serving the L/SE board and members ensure that Social Media guidelines are adhered to to monitor emerging digital channels, make recommendations to CMI regarding new communication opportunities, develop and implement plans as appropriate this role can be supported by a Communications Working Group made of experienced board and non-board members to form part of the team assisting with the preparation of the annual Operating plan 5

Events Champion to ensure all events align to the strategic objectives of the Board to liaise with the Member Engagement Team to coordinate surveys to members to ensure activities and events are of real value to members ensure the event information is received by the Member Engagement Team by the 20 th of the month, so this can be included in the next mailing to form part of the team assisting with the preparation of the annual Operating Plan to work with the Networks, IC and WiM Champions and the regional networks to coordinate a balanced and varied events programme to ensure there is no clash of dates and duplication to report to the Board on events related KPIs, including financial performance of the events programme 7. Networks Champion its members co-ordinate creation of regional networks support regional contribution to national networks encourage relationships between regional and national networks develop employer and learning organisation engagement with networks to support Regional board activities to form part of the team assisting with the preparation of the annual Operating Plan. 6

Professional Bodies Champion its members to develop relationships with Professional Bodies local contacts in the Region to liaise with the Partnerships Team to ensure information is shared and any leads are passed on to form part of the team assisting with the preparation of the annual Operating Plan 9. Education Provider/Higher Education Champion its members to co-ordinate Regional Board and Ambassador contact with educational organisations in the local area supported by the Activities Champion/HE to support the Regional Board members and Ambassadors in the presentation of the benefits of membership to local learners to develop relationships with education providers to support Regional Board activities to develop a two-way relationship with the Partnerships Team to ensure information is shared on any activity in the region with HE Partners and potential HE Partners to form part of the team assisting with the preparation of the annual Operating Plan. 7

Higher Education Activities Champion its members to be the L&SE Board s point of contact for the delivery of HE curriculum enrichment activities 1 as determined by the Board s HE Champion to liaise with other L&SE Board Champions, particularly the Events, Networks, WiM and IC Champions, to deliver the curriculum enrichment activities agreed in each HE partnership in the region (Appendix 2 Sections 1 and 2). to liaise with Networks Support for the delivery of curriculum enrichment activities which fall outside the Board s remit (Appendix 2 Sections 3 and 4) to facilitate communications between the HE Champion, relevant Board champions and leaders of networks within the L&SE region. to assist the HE Champion with the preparation of the annual Regional Board Operating Plan (HE curriculum enrichment aspects). 1 During FY 15/16 it is anticipated that the curriculum enrichment activities will be as determined by the Board and the HE Champion working in collaboration with the CMI s HE Partnerships team 11. Finance Champion oversee the budgeting and financial reporting processes in liaison with the Institute s finance team to check financial records as provided by the Institute s Finance Department 8
9 to confirm quarterly and annual financial returns as determined by Institute s Finance Department to present financial information to meetings of the Regional Board to be part of the team to assist with the preparation of the annual Regional Board operating plan providing cash flow and forecast information for the annual budget to liaise with Institute s Finance Department as necessary 12. Events Admin and Volunteer Champion assist the Events Champion with the coordination and delivery of a balanced programme of events for members through liaison with Networks Support and key volunteers from networks in the region. to raise awareness of the importance to CMI, IC and WiM members of professional volunteering in the London and South East Region s networks to play an active role in finding new volunteers for existing and future networks in the region to run the Regional Board s Volunteer Award schemes to form part of the team assisting with the preparation of the annual Operating Plan The Role The role is likely to suit an individual who is looking for a hands on position in a voluntary organisation. The individual will have the opportunity to demonstrate delivering practical support to the members in a developing region. The commitment can be variable and tailored to complement other responsibilities held; it is envisaged that phone calls and s will be required on a weekly basis; an occasional meeting required with permanent CMI staff and the quarterly Board meeting (the latter in central London). Fulfilment of the Board role would not only enhance a CV of recent graduate or aspiring manager but also provide a wealth of networking opportunities across a wide variety of sectors in addition to demonstrating team work with others on the Board. 9
10 Co-Opt 1. Affiliates Champion to this Champion Role. The CMI have a large population of students who receive CMI membership as results of studying for one of the CMI s qualification. However, on completion of their studies, only a few will convert to a fully paid membership grade. Therefore a Board Champion is required to develop new areas of activity to appeal to student affiliate members to (a) ensure the obtain full value from their membership and (b) covert into fully paid membership grade at some point in the future.. The Affiliate Champion must be a member (of any grade) of the CMI, IC or WiM networks. The selected individual will be expected to work closely with the Board s Education Provider Champion, Higher Education Activity Champion, Communications Champion, various Head Office staff as well as various external stakeholders to develop new areas of activity in the region to appeal to student affiliate members. This is currently a new and emerging area so the exact scope responsibilities are still not concrete; and in fact the role holder has the opportunity to shape the role. However it is safe to say that the responsibility involved will be working closely with the CMI Affiliate Project team to ensure a pragmatic delivery to members within the region, as the team: Develops the CMI Achieve mentoring scheme into a specific benefit, targeting the unique support that student Affiliates are asking for; Develops a CV review service to specifically help student Affiliates gain employment and to develop their personal skills through this service; Differentiates the tangible benefits for student Affiliates to complement and support their career development, including intern/placement and job opportunities; Builds a marketing and communications plan to launch and underpin our refreshed Affiliate proposition, both directly and via other key stakeholders. The Role The role is likely to suit an individual who is looking for a hands on position in a voluntary organisation. The commitment can be variable and tailored to complement other responsibilities held. However it is safe the say the workload will cover weekly phone calls, weekly s, occasional telephone / face-to-face meetings as well as attending the quarterly Board meeting (in central London). 10
11 Co-Opt 2. Networks Admin Champion. to be the point of contact for information on regional networks formed within the Institute to support Regional networks in initial stages of set-up in conjunction with Network support and Network Champion to attend Regional Network Events in partnership with the Network Champion to liaise with Network Support to ensure Networks are supported, appropriate processes are set up between Network Support and Regional Networks. To liaise with other L&SE Board Champions, particularly the Events, HE, WiM and IC Champions, to deliver L&SE Board s strategic objectives To facilitate communications between the HE Champion, relevant Board champions and leaders of networks within the L&SE region. To assist the Network Champion with the preparation of the annual Regional Board Operating Plan The Role The role is likely to suit an individual who is looking for a hands on position in a voluntary organisation. The commitment can be variable and tailored to complement other responsibilities held. However it is safe the say the workload will cover weekly phone calls, weekly s, occasional telephone / face-to-face meetings as well as attending the quarterly Board meeting (in central London). 11
