3 The Philips Young Inventor Challenge (PYIC) is Back! Background The inaugural Young Inventors Challenge was initiated by Philips Malaysia in 2004 and organised once again in 2005 as part of its sustainability efforts in Malaysia. The challenge provided Malaysian undergraduates and postgraduates a choice platform to explore and develop creative ideas which may improve the lives and living environment of Malaysians. It is also to encourage mentorship between Philips and the undergraduates. CONFIDENTIAL 3

4 Previous challenge The inaugural Young Inventors Challenge was initiated by Philips Malaysia in 2004 and organised once again in 2005 as part of its sustainability efforts in Malaysia. The challenge provided Malaysian undergraduates and postgraduates a choice platform to explore and develop creative ideas which may improve the lives and living environment of Malaysians. Opened to all institutions of higher learning registered with the Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education. Inventions must use at least one of the following Philips Semiconductors Thrust products Identification chips or/and Microcontroller. The challenge was successfully executed with 133 entries received from 18 tertiary institutions, which noted a 87 per cent increase in concept papers as compared to 71 entries received last year. Out of the 14 teams qualified for the finals, eleven hailed from Universiti Teknologi Malaysia, Skudai, Johor. The remaining three were from University Tunku Abdul Rahman (UTAR), Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM) and University College Sedaya International (UCSI). CONFIDENTIAL 4

5 Success of the challenge Amongst the inventions presented by the finalist teams were prototypes to increase convenience and seamless transactions in today s lifestyle and day-to-day activities. 8 This Year s Challenge Into its third year, PYIC will shift its focus from Philips Semiconductor thrust products (Microcontroller and RFID) to Philips Lighting. The program s continuing aim is to provide a platform for creative young individuals to explore in the areas of invention and technological advances. 18 Challenge Guidelines Opened to all Institutions of Higher Learning registered with the Malaysian Ministry of Higher Education. Participants must be current full-time students of the institution they represent. Each institution is allowed to send in as many group entries as they wish; however, participating members must be from the same institution (from 2 4 members) and supervised by an Advisor (Lecturer). 21 Judging Criteria Innovation & Creativity 40% The originality and creativity of your idea and work. It must be a new idea and must not be submitted to another competition or own by any commercial operation. Application / Practicality 30% The invention s ease of use as well as the practicality and feasibility of the invention. The functionality and product experience and usefulness Appeal 20% How well the invention relates to the urban and rural demography. It should enhance the quality of life, makes sense, provide meaningful and relevant solutions Presentation 10% Demonstration of team work and convincing presentation skills CONFIDENTIAL 21

22 Other Tips You must have a clear, complete and easily understood entry. It is important that your research paper clearly answers the following questions. Why is this an innovation? What problem does it solve? How is your innovation different, new and noteworthy? What benefits will your innovation bring to humanity? How will it improve the quality of life, enhance efficiency in a significant or meaningful way? Submit supporting materials such as data, trials, paper illustrations etc. that can help the judges better understand your idea. Completeness of your entry.
