1 PROCESS PLANT DESIGN (PPD) THEME THE X SOLUTION: FOOD-WATER-ENERGY NEXUS - To provide a process plant solution in attempts to develop ideas in solving the world food energy water crisis. - To create awareness of the global food water energy problem within Chemical Engineers. OBJECTIVES - To design a process plant which utilizes current green technologies to solve the world food OR/AND energy OR/AND water crisis problem and be economically feasible at the same time. DESCRIPTION - In general, a successful process plant design will contain the following criteria: 1. Adhere to green technologies 2. Economically feasible. 3. Good or no environmental impact. 4. High safety conditions within the process plant. - This competition is conceptual design based; therefore, detailed calculations are not necessary. - The plant design should be constituted of more than one operation unit. - The suggested solution (other than solar energy) must be related to an attempt to solve the world food OR/AND energy OR/AND water crisis problem. - There are no restrictions on type, scale, or the technology of plant used. - The competition consists of TWO (2) parts: > Plant Design Report > Plant Design Model PRIZES - The THREE(3) best plant design projects will be selected as the winning design: > 1st Prize : RM , certificate & trophy > 2nd Prize : RM , certificate & trophy > 3rd Prize : RM , certificate & trophy

2 - All participating team will be awarded with a certificate of participation. RESULTS - The winners of this competition will be announced during NACES 2016 closing ceremony on 11 th September ELIGIBILITY - Participants must be full time undergraduate students enrolled in a Chemical Engineering Program(or equivalent) offered by one of the participating universities/institutions. - Participants must submit an attested copy of student identity card (ID) along with the entry form. - The group can consist of students from any year of study. JUDGING CRITERIA RULES AND REGULATIONS - Evaluation will be judged based on the design s novelty, process feasibility and effectiveness, economic value, environmental friendly and optimum natural resources used. - Creativity and innovation (on the technology or the process design) would be given a credit. - Marks will be given to the plant-design report, plant design model, presentation and the question and answer session upon the judges evaluation. - The entries will be evaluated by a panel of judges. - Each university/institution is entitled to send maximum TWO(2) teams consisting of FIVE(5) students each. However only the FIRST FIFTEEN (15) teams that registered and paid the registration fees will be selected. - The submitted entry must be original. Innovative proposed design in this competition will be valued; any IMITATION entry would directly be DISQUALIFIED. - Entry which does not comply with any of the above rules will be AUTOMATICALLY DISQUALIFIED. FORMAT - A) PLANT DESIGN PROJECT REPORT Language : English > A 250 words executive summary, which consists of brief description on the design, proposed solution, material and energy balance calculation, economic analysis, process safety and the Process Flow Diagram (PFD) of the plant design MUST be included.

3 > The Process Flow Diagram (PFD) must adhere to British Standards. > The submitted plant design project report must not exceed 25 pages (excluding cover page, table of contents, executive summary, references and appendices). > All submissions must be 1.5 spacing with NORMAL page margins, (Left and Right margin: 2.54 cm while Top and Bottom margin: 2.54 cm) in TIMES NEW ROMAN font with 12-POINT font size. The text should be JUSTIFIED with all the main titles highlighted in bold. > Page numbers should be aligned at BOTTOM CENTER and presented in the form of bold number. The counting of page number should EXCLUDE from the cover, table of content and executive summary pages. > References: Students are required to cite the sources from which ideas they are using. Please refer the documentation system to be used is Havard Referencing. > All softcopy submissions MUST BE in PDF file while all hardcopy submissions must be printed out in A4-size and should adhere to the guidelines. - B) PLANT DESIGN MODEL > The plant design must be constructed on the MDF Board platform that will be provided by the host, in the dimension of 1m x 1m. > The participants are required to prepare and bring along their miscellaneous units models, as well as any other necessary tools/stationeries/equipment on event day. > The use of electrical circuits and batteries are allowed in the plant design model. > Each team will be given 4 hours to set up the prepared operation units on the provided platform before the competition starts. > Labelling on each constructed unit operations and the flow direction MUST be included in the plant model. > Each team from each participating university/institution will present their work in series upon the judge s evaluation during the competition day.

4 > Each team is given maximum 10 minutes to present their plant design project and the period for the question and answer sessions will depend on the respective judges. > Number of participants to present is depends on the group (Not compulsory for all the participants to present). > All tables and figures/pictures must be properly labelled. > The cover page of the submitted project report must consist of: 1. Title of the plant design 2. Name of the plant design 3. Name and IC number of each participant (with the name of the team leader at first) 4. Year of study of each participant 5. Contact number and address (only team leader) > The project content should adhere to the following sequence: 1. Brief acknowledgement of disclaimers (if any) 2. Table of Content 3. Executive Summary 4. Introduction (Design Background, Problem and Proposed Solution). 5. Design Methodology (Design Process Description, Material and 6. Energy Balance Calculation and Process Control). 7. Economic Analysis 8. Risk Assessment (Economic, safety (HAZOP) and environmental considerations) 9. Conclusion and Recommendation 10. References 11. Appendices > The appendices must consist of: 1. Tables and/or Figures (if any) 2. Related Picture (if any) SUBMISSION GUIDELINES - Registration Form Submission Participants are required to fill up the REGISTRATION FORM provided in order to confirm their participation. The form should be submitted to the host latest by 1 st of

5 May 2016 via - Registration form of all competitions for each university/institution should be submitted collectively, together with the list of participants. It should be sent via before the dateline. - Follow strictly to the subject ([PPD]_Name of university/institution) or application of respective university/institution will not be entertained. Example: [PPD]_UNMC - Plant Design Report Submission Submission dateline: 1 st of August PLANT DESIGN REPORT must be submitted to the host in form of softcopy (via Naces2016@nottingham.edu.my ) BEFORE the submission dateline. - All successful receipt of submissions will be notified via the provided copies of hardcopy must be submitted during the registration day. - Any changes of the participants must be informed 3 WEEKS earlier before the day of the event. - For any inquiries, kindly contact us via Naces2016@nottingham.edu.my **These guidelines need to be closely followed. The host has all the rights to eliminate/annul/disqualify any parties that violate the guidelines as stated above. Such actions may be taken by the host without any prior notice to the respective parties. **The judges' decisions are final and any challenges or appeals to the decisions will not be entertained any prior notice the respective parties.
