5 The CanInfra Challenge... What ideas are we looking for? What type of ideas should applications address? Past examples of 'transformational' projects Applications can address project ideas for any transformational infrastructure proposal Transformational projects are ones that have: i. a major economic impact (ie., GDP per capita) ii. a major impact on quality-of-life and societal wellbeing (ie., safety, connectivity, tech) We invite bold, audacious and innovative ideas to tackle different challenges (indicative only): Accelerating productivity growth De-carbonizing mass transport Preparing cities for growth Renewable energy Economic inclusion for all Canadians Ideas can include: building a new infra asset, transforming existing asset or strategies to enable investment (innovative tech, financial structures or implementation approaches) St Lawrence Seaway Canadian Pacific Railway Canada's Telecommunications Backbone 5

6 The CanInfra Challenge... What's at stake? Support provided throughout the challenge ' Financial support Long-list to be provided with $2,500 to further develop their idea, including filming a longer 5-minute pitch video Short-list to be provided with an add'l $5,000 to further develop idea & proposal and travel to summit (i.e., contest booth, video refresh, project model) Coaching and feedback Long list to be provided with detailed feedback on initial applications (i.e., key areas in need of further research, etc) Short-listed teams to be given access to a broader network of experts in order to refine final pitch (eg., legal, finance, strategy) Media support Select long and short list ideas to be featured in broader CanInfra Challenge marketing channels Prizes for winners Prizes for winners: $100K for final winner $50K for people's choice $30K for second place $20K for third place Pitch session: Winner to secure a private pitch session with Minister of Finance Exposure: Build brand within infrastructure community 6

7 The CanInfra Challenge... What does applying entail? One-pager summary Up to ten-page presentation Short video A one-page executive summary of the project idea that covers: A presentation that's up to ten pages and that pitches project idea in more detail: A 2-5 minute video that pitches idea in a compelling and creative way General description of idea Summary of key benefits associated with idea and why it's transformational Summary of key Canadian need(s) addressed by idea Key enablers & challenges faced by idea Proposed mitigation strategy for any key challenges What is the idea? (1-2 pgs) Why is it transformational (ie., potential economic & social impact, benefits / impact assessment)? (3-4 pgs) What are the key enablers, challengers and mitigation tactics (1-2 pgs) Optional: What is a rough estimate of project costs and what are potential sources of funding / financing (1-2 pgs) A video of 1-2 team members pitching the idea in a short, inspirational 2-5 minute video Note: Video production quality will not be a criteria used to assess initial applications Note: Video budget support to be provided to long & short-listed teams so they can refine their visuals, props, etc. 7

8 The CanInfra Challenge... What are the judging criteria? Judging criteria will be kept consistent throughout the contest All initial entries will be judged against three main criteria: Transformational How large an impact would the idea have on Canada? Would it represent a step-change improvement or a dramatic shift in our economic well-being, the way we work, interact, and/or live? Relevance How well does the project meet Canada's specific set of challenges today and the future? Feasibility Does the team outline how their idea could be believably implemented? Given the current state of technology and Canada's unique eco-system how feasible is the project? Finalists presenting at the CanInfra Prize will be judged on the criteria above as well as two additional criteria: Presentation & Video How compelling/inspiring was the presentation / video? To what degree did the idea resonate with the broader audience? Question & answer Did the presenters adequately reply to all of the questions raised by the judging panel? Did they demonstrate their depth of understanding on the topic? 8

The Caninfra Challenge is a public, open contest that will accept applications from any Canadian team; e.g., Think tanks Universities Industry bodies General public Consortia of above Contestants encouraged to form selforganized teams vs. submit as individuals What will the judging criteria be? Five criteria will be used to judge the final presentations in early spring 1. Transformational: How "transformational" is the idea? 2. Relevance: How well does idea meet Canada's challenges? 3. Feasibility: Is idea executable? 4. Presentation: How engaging was the final presentation & video? 5. Q&A: How well does the team respond to expert Q&A / feedback?
