The Tar Sands Action organized by Bill McKibbin, 350.org founder and great environmental activist and advocate. As phase one of this Tar Sands Action campaign wrapped up Sept 3, 1,252 people have been hauled away in police vans, hands cuffed behind their backs - - and heads held very high. Yesterday, as the protests, which marked the largest visible actions in the environmental movement in recent decades concluded at the White House, organizers pledging to escalate a nationwide campaign to push President Obama to deny the permit for a new tar sands oil pipeline. MGSA was hard at work all summer to make this Fall great. There will be a lot of opportunities for you to get involved on campus and in your community. We will be building our community garden, hosting a local rally as part of 350 s International Moving Planet day, promoting green tailgating at our new stadium, holding the 4th annual Greenfest in November and much more!! 2 Moving Planet September 23, 2011 Are you or your organization looking to get involved? Want to be part of something bigger? Then here is your opportunity to get together with millions of other people around the world and move beyond the use of fossil fuels! On September 23, 2011 the Mission Green Student Association and PBSC s Ecology Club are teaming up to host our a local event as part of 350.org s Moving Planet Day - a day where FAU and PBSC students will march (Bike, Skate, Foot, Roller Blade, Scooter) through the streets of Boca Raton to show our support for a fossil free future. We will begin the march at Engineering East and head 3 miles to Spanish River Park. At the end of the march, we will have food, refreshments and fun! There will be lots of prizes, raffles, games and activities for all those who attend. Take advantage of the beautiful beach that day and bring your surfboard, kayak, etc! If you or your organization would like to help plan this event, volunteer, or participate please contact Mission Green atgomissiongreen@fau.edu We hope to see you there! Ride with 350 Riding a bicycle is one of the best ways to cut carbon, build a movement, and have fun while doing it. Here are three bikerelated initiatives that 350.org is involved with: Moving Planet on September 24 is a global mobilization that everyone can get involved with a single day to move beyond fossil fuels. Climate Ride West is a 5-day, 320 mile charitable bike ride throughout California from October 2nd 5th. The 2-Mile Challenge is a mission to avoid 100,000 car trips by biking instead of driving. Join in! 350.org What is it all about??? 350.org is building a global grassroots movement to solve the climate crisis. Scientists measure carbon dioxide in "parts per million" (ppm), so 350ppm is the number humanity needs to get below as soon as possible to avoid runaway climate change. To get there, we need a different kind of PPM a "people powered movement" that is made of people like you in every corner of the planet. 3 This semester, Mission Green will be building a pilot program for our on- campus Community Garden. After 2 years of working for approval from administration, we will be able to build 10 beds in a currently empty lot next to the FAU Greenhouse. The garden will be chemical free, promote native plants and be used as a living classroom. MGSA hopes to offer gardening workshops including: - Advice on all stages of planting - Composting, - Irrigation systems, - Methods of gardening, - Organic Gardening - And much more! General Meetings for Fall 2011 Thursdays 7:00 pm in the Student Union visit for info FAU Community Garden Volunteer Hours Available Help Needed What we need from you is help preparing the garden site and building beds. The 10 beds in the pilot program will be open to student, faculty, staff and all member of the FAU Community. However, with the limited space, we recommend people team up as sign- ups are first come first serve and it is easier for several people to maintain a bed than it is for one. Those who sign up for beds will be expected to help build the site, but it is not mandatory. There will be a $20 deposit to secure your space when we start taking sign- ups. Its mission is to diversify and advance the ecology profession through opportunities that stimulate and nurture the interest of underrepresented students to not only participate in ecology, but to lead. Focused mainly at the undergraduate level, with extension services for communities, high schools, graduate students, and international collaborations, the SEEDS program promotes an ecology profession with wide representation to ensure environmental understanding and a sustainable future for all. SEEDS offers hands- on, engaging experiences with ecology that exhibit the relevance and applications of the science. Each experience also provides opportunities to interact with a diverse group of ecologists and other motivated students to both broaden and deepen students understanding of ecology and potential careers. Oceana Activist Summit On Saturday, September 10 from 10:00am - 2:00pm, Oceana is hosting a Strategic Planning Summit in Ft Lauderdale. Their focus for this fall is the pass a resolution against offshore drilling through the County Commissions of SE Florida. This event is free and open to the public so feel free to bring a friend! Lunch will be provided by Oceana so let us know if you have any dietary restrictions! Please RSVP so we know we have enough seats and food! Tue, September 13, 7pm 9pm Palm Beach County Reef Research Team Where: 3323 Belvedere Road, Bldg 509, West Palm Beach FL 334 (map) Description: The Team's mission is to observe, collect, document and record scientific data for use in further enhancing our marine habitats. We hold general and planning meetings monthly which are open to members and the public. For more information, please check out the Reef Research Team's web site Sat, September 17, 8am 11am International Coastal Cleanup Location 1: Jupiter Ridge Natural Area, Jupiter 1800 S. U.S. Highway 1, Jupiter (map) Trash removal (along Intracoastal Waterway first then on to interior roads and U.S. Highway 1) Volunteers must arrive at 8 a.m. we will be leaving the parking lot by County vehicles no later than 8:15 to travel to the cleanup site. Volunteers arriving late will not be able to help with the project. Location 2: Munyon Island, North Palm Beach Participation at this site is for individuals, families or groups who want to travel by boat from Lakeside Park to Munyon Island located in Lake Worth Lagoon to participate in the cleanup. Lakeside Park is located at 672 Lakeside Drive, North Palm Beach. Transportation by boat will be provided, however, private boaters are welcome to meet at Lakeside Park to register and pick up supplies. Registration is limited to 100 participants. Sat, September 24, 8:30am 11:30am National Public Lands Day, Jupiter Inlet Lighthouse Outstanding Natural Area Description: Removing Trash, Collecting Red Mangrove Seeds, Removing Invasive Plants Volunteers should wear long pants, t- shirts, boots or sneakers. Restroom facilities are available at Lighthouse Park. We will be working in brush- filled areas so volunteers should wear old clothes and shoes. Volunteers may also be working along a mangrove shoreline, so be prepared to get wet and muddy. The Department will supply tools, gloves, and refreshments.
