1 Information pack Intern International Awards 5 days a week, for 3 months, in Ashden s Programme Team Ashden winner Futurepump providing affordable, sustainable water pumping to smallholder farmers in East Africa Ashden champions and supports sustainable energy leaders to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon world.

2 1. Introduction Ashden is a charity that champions and supports the leaders in sustainable energy to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon world. We believe the creation of a sustainable energy system is the biggest challenge and the biggest opportunity of our time. We uncover the best in sustainable energy technology, business and leadership and show the world its potential to improve lives and safeguard the planet for future generations. Since our first award in 2001, our winners have transformed the lives of more than 88 million people in the UK and worldwide. Their solutions range from simple solar lanterns across Africa that allow children to do their homework after sunset, to low-carbon building innovators in the UK. Their inspiring stories show how, with ingenuity and determination, even the toughest challenges can be overcome. The impact of their work can be seen in enhanced educational standards, better health and improved livelihoods for poor people, as well as cleaner, more profitable businesses. We believe that these projects support a wide range of not just environmental objectives but social and economic ones too. We have a thriving network of more than 200 winners who we work with on an ongoing basis to ensure that others can learn from their success, that their voices are heard in policymaking, and that, collectively, we illuminate the way to a thriving low-carbon world. 3 2. Our strategy We are a global catalyst: our insights and stories influence key players and benefit all those working in sustainable energy. We scan the world for the best examples of innovation in sustainable energy and support the innovators and entrepreneurs to accelerate their impact. We take this experience and work in collaboration with others to enable systemic change, in UK and globally. We work in two domains: Sustainable Cities and Sustainable Energy for Inclusive Development. This role will focus on the latter domain. 3. Purpose of this role The Intern will play an important role in researching cutting-edge developments in the sustainable energy sector and uncovering outstanding organisations eligible to apply for the 2019 International Awards. This research will contribute to Ashden s goal of finding, rewarding and promoting the very best in sustainable energy innovation. This is a great opportunity for someone interested in deepening their knowledge of clean energy technologies and business models across Africa, Asia and Central/South America, and understanding how these contribute to low carbon development and progress against the Sustainable Development Goals. The Intern will also play a key role in supporting other activities within Ashden s International Programme and across other teams. 4. Position in organisation As part of the Programmes Team, this role will report to the Senior International Programme Officer. You will work within a small and dynamic team to support with a range of tasks relating to the call for entries for the 2019 International Ashden Awards. You will also contribute to other areas of International work, such as the monitoring, business support and research. There will be opportunities to work collaboratively across Ashden more broadly, for example with the Communications team. 5. Skills and experience The successful candidate will have a passion for sustainable development tackling climate change and making lives better, as well as the motivation and skills to structure a research project over several months, distil key information and feed back to the team. Essential: Strong research and analysis skills. This includes the ability to plan and structure a research project and produce key outcomes. Excellent communication skills, both written and spoken, comfortable making international phone calls. A positive attitude, ability to learn quickly and show initiative. An interest in, and good understanding of, issues relating to clean energy, international development and the environment.

4 Desirable: A degree or other qualification (in progress or completed) in a relevant subject area. Language skills. Work experience in a relevant area. 6. Tasks and responsibilities Help us find the winners of tomorrow Carry out desk research to identify organisations that are eligible to apply for the 2019 Ashden Awards. This will involve looking at key websites, publications and social media to identify organisations doing innovative, impactful work in the sustainable energy sector in developing world. Document research findings using Excel and provide regular research updates to the International Team, including explaining relevant details of different organisations work and how they fit into the wider sustainable energy/energy access sector. Support the Senior International Programme Officer in inviting relevant organisations to apply by phone and . Support the International team s wider work to create positive change Support the Senior International Programme Officer with the ongoing monitoring and business support programmes for past winners. Help to publicise winner news and achievements by contributing to blog posts and news items for the Ashden website. Contribute to wider research to inform and improve Ashden s work, including desk research, summarising key information and proof-reading, as necessary. Summarise and share information from relevant webinars and reports on sustainable energy, as suggested by members of the International team. Help feed back the latest information to inform the team s work. Carry out tasks for the wider Ashden team, as needed. 7. Terms and conditions Ashden aims to be a progressive and considerate employer and assist employees to maintain a healthy work/life balance. We are looking for someone available to start the week of 10 th September 2018, for three months (some flexibility). Contract: Full time, 5 days a week. Remuneration: London Living Wage. Location: Ashden s offices in London Victoria which are fully accessible. Hours: 35 hours per week with some flexibility.
