2 BOOK REVIEW We re back in business after an August vacation. On Tuesday, September 26 at 3:00 p.m. in Auditorium A, Terry Shea will review Stranger in the Woods by Michael Finkel. This is the true story of a 20- year-old man who lived alone in the woods of Maine for 27 years. Living in a tent, he survived by his wits and courage. He broke into nearby cottages for food, clothing, books, and other provisions, never taking more than he actually needed. He never spoke to another human being until nearly three decades later, when he was arrested for stealing food. This account of his secluded life, as well as the challenges he faced upon returning to the world, detail a gripping story of survival and living life one s own way. Terry Shea, former Inspector General, USIA, has degrees from Georgetown University and the National Defense University. While serving in Belgium as Special Advisor to the Secretary General of NATO, Terry created a security education film, which won numerous awards. All are welcome to attend this fascinating review. 4 HUNGRY BIRDS The birds near our former Cafe windows are still there and they are as hungry as ever. The landscape has changed a bit: trees removed, new ones planted, feeders moved. But the scene is as before: birds waiting their turn flitting back and forth. Ground feeders (including squirrels) keeping it all tidy. We have been feeding them during the construction/restructuring period. In early October we will able to view the birds again when the Cafe, rechristened Fillmore Room, will be open for overflow dining room patrons Volunteers maintain and stock the bird feeders. Purchase of the bird seed is wholly supported by contributions from Goodwin House residents. Please consider making a donation to the bird seed fund. Cash or check made out to GHA Bird Feeders addressed to Morton Roberts or Jane Jordan and left at the front desk would be most welcome. Morton Roberts HOW ABOUT A PAPER ROUTE?! Each weekend a resident volunteer delivers the weekly Gazette to Health Care Center residents. Those neighbors of ours really appreciate this kindness by their fellow residents that updates them on what is going on here at Goodwin House. But we need a couple of new deliverers. The delivery route takes about one hour to complete, and the delivery times are at the convenience of the paper-girl/boy. The frequency we strive for is once every three to four weeks. Please call Mike McCaffree at for more details and to get your own paper route! Mike McCaffree The deadline for the weekly Gazette is every Tuesday at 4:00 p.m. Please submit all articles via to Jenny Wu: cwu@goodwinhouse.org Gazette 9/24/2017 4
