2 National Alumni Association (NAA) 2015 Summer Conference Update The 2015 annual Summer Conference was held on campus July 23-26, The conference will be remembered for some firsts. Registration and the Meet & Greet activities were held in the Alumni House at 1410 Oakwood Avenue. Nearly 90% of conference attendees completed registration on opening day. Conference culminated with a worship service in the historic chapel. A special Fallen Falcon memorial tribute was included in the service. Approximately 100 alumni, pre-alumni, University staff and community supporters attended the various activities throughout the four day conference. Twelve chapters had representation at the conference. States represented were: North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Virginia and DC. Opening Session Vice President Charlotte Turpin welcomed conference attendees and introduced NAA President Pattye Brown who gave the purpose and goals of the conference. Chairman Rodney Gaddy extended greetings on behalf of the University s Board of Trustees and President Everett B. Ward welcomed alumni home for the 2015 conference. Following a brief break, attendees had a choice of four concurrent workshops to select from. The afternoon session began with brief updates by Dr. Steven Hairston, VP & COO; Dr. Ronald Brown, VP of Enrollment & Student Services; Ms. Shelley Willingham-Hinton, VP Marketing & Branding; Rev. William T. Newkirk, Sr., Alumni Trustee; and Mrs. Caren House, VP Sr. Relationships Manager with Wells Fargo did a session on Identity Theft Protection. The Raleigh Wake Chapter was recognized for outstanding service to NAA and individual recognition went to Sterling Goodwin and Wayne Johnson.

3 Third Annual White Affair Distinguished alumnus, Lionel J. Randolph 68 was the recipient of the Presidential Award for outstanding, loyal and dedicated service to NAA. Lionel received the award during the White Affair event on Friday night, July 24, Blue & White Presidential Breakfast President Dr. Everett B. Ward gave the State of the University address. Issues covered included enrollment, recruitment, the stadium, alumni support and University Capital Campaigns. Dr. Ward applauded several local alums who had made significant contributions through their networking in the community and shared how the University was the benefactor of their efforts. He spoke briefly of the inauguration activities that are scheduled during homecoming weekend. It is his desire for alumni returning for homecoming to be a part of the historical celebration. Following President Ward s address, NAA President Pattye Brown gave the State of the Organization address. President Brown spoke on issues NAA was dealing with currently with membership being #1 on the list. She reported that approximately 30 alums had passed since October 2014, several of whom were members of NAA. A new membership data base was purchased that would be of great value with membership renewals, payment of dues, etc. She announced a steering committee had been formed for the first NAA Capital Campaign. NAA s First Fish Fry The grounds of the Alumni House was the site of NAA s first annual fish fry. The Coordinators were Sterling Goodwin of the Raleigh-Wake Retired Chapter and Wayne Johnson of the Durham Chapter. Alums feasted on fried fish, potato salad, Cole slaw, fries, hushpuppies, cornbread, an assortment of fruits and beverages. Sunday Worship: The Historic Chapel The conference culminated with a Sunday morning worship service in the historic chapel under the direction of University Chaplain, Mother Nita Byrd. The morning message was delivered by Rev. Hilton O. Smith 68. National Officers and

4 members were participants in the formal worship service and alumni from various chapters served as ushers. President Dr. Everett B. Ward gave closing remarks prior to benediction. Outstanding Alumni Contributions James & Germaine Pinkney, classes of 62 and 63 respectively, donated a 50 flat screen television for the conference room. Hezekiah Goodson 82 donated (to NAA) art of the Prezell R. Robinson Library and Tuttle Hall to be displayed in the Alumni House. In addition, 4 sets of note cards from his collection of Saint Augustine s campus scenes were donated and given as door prizes. Eugene Thomas and Boyd Joye, classes of 68 and 83 respectively, served as free-lance photographers throughout the conference. Many of the photos in this issue are products of their work.
