1 JUNE 2016 Senior Voices C A T H O L I C C H A R I T I E S E I G H B O R H O O D S E R V I C E S B A Y S I D E S E N I O R C E N T E R Horace Harding Expressway, Bayside, New York Phone #: (718) /14 6/19 6/20 Holidays This Month Dear Members, June is definitely bustin out all over, and we are so grateful that we are well enough to come to the center and enjoy another summer season together. We can all enjoy the landscaping around the center, and I invite you to walk through our backyard, sit on a bench and pretend you're far away on a relaxing vacation, and enjoy your time outdoors. This month, we celebrate Father's Day with carnations for all of our gentlemen on June 17 th. We're also initiating a Walk With Ease Workshop, on Wednesday, June 22 nd at 9 am, for people with Arthritis and other conditions that would be helped by walking. This workshop includes both education and action. Martine and I will lead this evidence-based program (like the Matter of Balance workshop). Please sign up in the office. We all need to move in whatever way is best for our conditions, limitation or preferences. Join the energetic, fun, DJ Giovanni, on Friday, June 3 rd for a great afternoon of dancing. And look for the trips Irene is scheduling. It's all on the bulletin board for easy reference. June is also the month when we get notices from the Department of Health and the Department for the Aging about the risks of heat related illness and the signs to watch out for. It s important for people with certain chronic diseases, pulmonary conditions, and who take sun-sensitive medications to be very careful about exposure to heat, sun and weather conditions. Be careful, drink lots of water, use air conditioning when you need it, and check with your doctor or pharmacist about your medications and interaction with the sun. We have received a notice from the Department for the Aging of a special program that provides free air conditioners for seniors with low incomes (same eligibility as HEAP program) and medical conditions that put you at-risk for heat stroke or breathing problems. You can see our Case Manger, Martine, for help with the application process. Linda, our Medicare Specialist, will be here the first and third Wednesday of the month to help you with insurance questions. We try to offer as much support for your life as we can. Ask us for what you need and we'll make every effort to point you in the right direction to get your answers. All the best, all the time, Susan Flag Day Father s Day Summer Begins Cataract Awareness Month National Safety Month 1

2 A cataract is a clouding of the lens of the eye that affects vision. While cataracts are generally age-related, they can occasionally be present at birth, a condition known as a congenital cataract. People with cataracts often describe having blurry or double vision, a strong glare, or difficulty seeing at night. Surgery is the only available treatment for removal, although it is typically not necessary. However, a cataract can lead to additional eye problems, so consult your ophthalmologist if you are experiencing any of these symptoms. As we age Adult cataracts develop slowly and painlessly, and early diagnosis is important for maintaining good eye heath. Mild clouding of the lens often occurs after age 60 with few vision problems, but by age 75, most people with cataracts have symptoms that do affect their vision. Visual problems that may be associated with cataracts include: Being sensitive to glare Cloudy, fuzzy, foggy, or filmy vision Difficulty seeing at night or in dim light Double vision Loss of color intensity Problems seeing shapes against a background or the difference between shades of colors Seeing halos around lights A standard eye exam and slit-lamp examination is used to diagnose cataracts. ASK LINDA Your Medicare Questions When can I sign up for Part D? When you become eligible for Medicare you can sign up for Part D, the prescription drug coverage part of Medicare. You need to first be enrolled in either Medicare Part A (Hospital) or Part B (Doctor coverage). If you don t sign up for Part D when first eligible, you may face a late enrollment penalty (for life), unless you have creditable coverage (coverage that is as good or better than Medicare from your employer). Your plan or employer should send you a notice every year advising you if your coverage is creditable for Part D. If you have creditable coverage that you like, you may want to keep it. WARNING: If you join a Medicare prescription drug plan, you may lose your creditable coverage. Ask your plan administrator what will happen to your other drug coverage if you join a Part D plan. ~ Father s Day Poem ~ F.A.T.H.E.R.S. "F" aithful. "A" lways there. "T" rustworthy. "H" onoring. 3 3 INQUIRING MINDS WANT TO KNOW: What is your favorite snack? Soo Jung - eats healthy vegetables and no chocolates or cookies. Mary Crehan - enjoys cookies, even if they aren't healthy. Irene Zeidberg - likes ice cream, especially chocolate, once a month, which is not as often as she would like to eat it. Gabrielita Flores - has an orange every other day. Frank Inzuto - enjoys plain pizza once a week. Denise Toulon - has fruit as she is not much of a snacker but does enjoy popcorn at the movies and ice cream once in a while. Carmella Pozzi - enjoys a big scoop of vanilla fudge ice cream almost every night. Annmarie Payne - eats peach Activa yogurt almost every day. My favorites are candy, chocolate chip cookies and, thanks to our Center, oranges. All snacks should be eaten early so they will be properly digested before going to bed. - Advisory Council President, Susan Hall
