4 A Not So Senior Moment By Martha Thorn Monique Chambers was born in France just before the beginning of World War II. When her father was killed during the bombing of the city where they lived, her mother was left a widow with four children. I wasn t even four years old when he died, Monique said, and my sister was six months old. One brother was 10 years older than me and the other was seven years older. After her father s death and during the German occupation, the family first went to stay with Monique s aunt. Later, they spent two years with her mom s friends in the South of France. Her maternal grandfather lost everything during World War I and started over with a franchise of a popular department store. When he retired, he sold out his interest in the franchise. In 1937 he bought a castle, and Monique s family s moved in with him. There was plenty of room for all of us, and we felt safe, Monique said. Monique lived in the castle for about 18 years -- until she graduated from college. The original building had burned down so it resembled a gentleman s estate, she said. While the drawbridge was long gone, it still had a moat and when the gates were closed at night, no one was coming in. The old part also had two spiral towers with stairs and a small dungeon. We kept it until my mom passed away and then sold it because it was too hard to maintain and none of us wanted to go back there to live. The new owner has rebuilt it and worked with the French Historical Society to make it a historical monument. In France, Monique was required to attend school until she was 14 years old. After that, she chose to attend a four-year girls college which was the equivalent of a two-year community college in the United States. At the college she studied German for two years and English for one year. After college she worked for American Express at its banking office at Chaumont-Semoutiers Air Base in Chaumont, France. My English was limited to what I d learned in college, so I took more classes with the American Red Cross, she said. When Monique felt like a change in 1963, she and her daughter came by boat to America to join her sister who lived with her husband at Dover Air Force Base in Dover, Del. I got my work visa and green card and my brother-in-law and his parents sponsored me, she said. She was 27 years old when she left France to begin her new life in the United States. On the day she left France, she heard the president had been shot. I immediately thought someone had killed Charles de Gaulle because there had been several attempts on his life. Later I learned the American president, John Kennedy, was killed. A memorial service was held aboard the ship, and since 90 percent of the passengers aboard the SS France were Americans coming home from abroad, it was a quiet and subdued trip. Monique worked at a bank in Dover, Del., for a while and then moved to Washington, D.C., where she worked at Riggs National Bank. Just as her home is now a historical monument in France, the bank where she worked in Washington, D.C., is now listed on the National Register of Historic Places. It s also a contributing property to two historic districts. 4

5 Monique met her husband in Washington and took two years off from work when her son was born. Then, she went back to banking. In 1970 she went to work for the United Virginia Bank of Fairfax which later became SunTrust Bank. She retired in 2001 after 40 years in banking years with SunTrust and 10 years with other banks. Since retiring, she has kept busy. When the husband of one of her nieces needed someone to help with his financial books, Monique did his bookkeeping. When her brother-in-law needed someone to manage the showroom of his flooring business a couple days a week, Monique helped and was soon working every day. When the flooring business showroom closed, she helped a nephew with filing in his business in Annapolis. Between times, she babysat for great nieces and great nephews. In 2010 her daughter, who lived in California, was diagnosed with cancer and given six months to live. She didn t make it that long, Monique said. Monique stayed in California for the few months that her daughter lived and then she remained in California until her granddaughter graduated from high school. While she visited Annapolis for the summer and holidays, she didn t return to Annapolis to live until Until then, I was busy, she said. Then, suddenly, I was looking for things to do. A member of the knitting group at St. Mary s Catholic Church, Monique has knitted items for Anne Arundel Medical Center, churches, schools, Boys and Girls Club of Annapolis, Winter Relief, Backpack Buddies, Birthright of Annapolis, the Pumpkin Patch at Saint Martin s Lutheran Church, and Mary s Center in Severna Park. Recipients have ranged from babies to seniors and have included cancer survivors, the homeless and the needy. In other ministries at St. Mary s she has helped collect food and clothing for the needy. When a friend at St. Mary s began talking about the, Monique decided to check it out. Roswitha Rosie Walkling, who was in charge of the center s knitting group at the time, immediately welcomed Monique. Since Rosie was from Germany and had married an Air Force guy, the two shared an instant rapport. The groups are different, but they are both fun, Monique said. I share a lot of good laughs with my friends in both of them and enjoy them both. Both groups average about 10 members and make items for others. Monique joined the church group 10 to 12 years ago and the senior center about six years ago. Before Rosie died in October 2017, she asked Monique to take over the center s knitting group. Monique said, Yes, and continues to follow Rosie s lead. Rosie used to say, I m not a teacher, but I will teach you what I ve learned for myself, Monique said. Monique agrees and the only change she s made is to the class hours. We didn t meet on the second Tuesday of the month because Rosie had a conflict, Monique said. I don t have a conflict so we meet every Tuesday 1 3 p.m. We welcome any senior who knits or wants to learn. Monique s passion for knitting began when she was 5 or 6 years old. The teenagers at the place we were staying in the South of France taught me to knit, she said, and I ve been knitting ever since. While she s still knitting, other interests have come and gone. My mother made all our clothes, and I made all my clothes until about 20 years ago, she said. Then, I lost interest. With all the sales and clothes becoming more affordable, it seemed cheaper to buy them. However, I ve kept my 45-year old Singer sewing machine because you never know when you might have to do a hem. Monique played basketball and ran in school. It was required, she noted. She played badminton with an American family and ping-pong with her brothers. At the senior center, she took a chair exercise class. Now, she walks and tries to stay active and healthy. I m not much of a joiner, but everyone has welcomed me at the center, so I try to help as much as I can, she says. 5
