A very special thanks to our friends at Endeavor Greenville and Clemson University for their support of the CSC Summer Meeting. Location (2-minute walk from the hotel) 1 North Main Street, Greenville, SC :30-8:00 am Registration & Breakfast All Hotel Meetings in Poinsett Ballroom 8:00-8:45 am And You Are? (Breakfast continues until 9:00 am) An icebreaker for everyone to learn more about their CSC colleagues. Led by: Jeff Lieberson, Vice President, Public Affairs, APLU Jack Martin, CSC Chair and Assistant Vice President for Communications, University of Washington Mark Land, Vice President for University Relations, Clemson University 8:45-8:50 am Intro to Free Speech Mania 2018 Free speech and First Amendment rights are public higher education s issue of the day. Every institution is going through a free speech challenge or will be going through one. These issues involve some of the most difficult and complex student and organizational behavior that can arise. At a time when public universities face increasing criticism from all sectors of society about their value, the way institutions navigate controversies over free speech on their
3 campuses can have long-term effects in how they are perceived by prospective students, parents, and elected officials. Over the next three hours, we ll hear from universities that have managed different facets of this multidimensional issue. We will then engage in breakout discussions on the array of free speech issues facing public institutions. 8:50-9:50 am Into the Fire: Managing Controversial Speakers, Protests, Students, & Faculty on Your Campus We ve heard about outsiders who are stirring the pot at college campuses. How have universities successfully managed and handled those situations? What about when the controversy comes from within? What if your campus has a student or faculty member who is a white nationalist promoting racism and violence? How do you manage hate speech and defend First Amendment rights while managing upset students, parents, and alums, as well as policymakers and the media? How do you manage related legal and PR challenges? What are the implications for campus security and safety? 9:50-10:05 am Coffee Break We ll hear from two universities that have been in these situations and learn from their experiences. Q&A to follow. Panelists Tom Milligan, Vice President of External Relations, Colorado State University Nicole Yucht, Assistant Vice President, University Communications, University of Florida 10:05-11:05 am When Free Speech Becomes a Legislative Battle The pitched battle over campus free speech is expanding into state legislatures with eight states enacting laws on the issue and more than a dozen others considering measures aimed at protecting First Amendment rights at colleges and universities. At their core, the bills seek to change practices on college campuses that lawmakers say have been used disproportionately to censor or curtail conservative speakers and student groups. How are universities engaging before, during, and after these legislative battles? What steps should institutions in other states take now? Moderator Sharon Martin, Vice President for University Relations, West Virginia University Panelists Brad Bohlander, Chief Communications Officer, Associate Vice Chancellor of University Communications, North Carolina State University Peter Matthes, Senior Advisor to the President and Vice President for External Relations, University of Iowa Laura Means, Communications Manager for Government Affairs, Georgia Tech Dana Topousis, Chief Marketing and Communications Officer, University of California, Davis 11:05-11:35 am Free Speech Breakout/Discussion Session Divide into groups and tackle one of the following questions: How do your legislative and communication teams work together to address legislation on free speech?
4 How has your university responded to/managed external factors (speakers, etc.) that create free speech issues? How has your university responded to/managed internal factors (faculty, students) that create free speech issues? What internal policies has your university implemented around protection of free speech, free speech zones, outside speakers, etc.? In what ways has your university worked to combat perceptions of a liberal bent in higher ed? To show that you are balanced and fair? To create a safe environment for all ideas? What programming, policies, statements, or initiatives does your institution have in place? 11:35-12:00 pm So What Did You Talk About? Breakout Reporting Each group will give a short presentation on their conclusions so everyone will have ideas to take back to their campuses. Moving forward, resources from institutions that have dealt with various aspects of free speech issues on campus will also be shared online. 12:00-1:00 pm Sponsored Lunch Presentation from Merit Pages It Takes a Village: Activating Personal Storytelling Combats Media Monoliths 1:00-1:30 pm Networking Break The opportunity for higher ed marketing leaders is clear: Presidents at leading institutions are asking, What can marketing do to contribute to our enrollment goals? Now is the time for marketing to get its seat at the table. To accomplish this, public universities must reliably reach broad audiences from rural communities to out-of-state residents with compelling content. Yet, the media landscape continues to change dramatically, with new online advertising gatekeepers and a shrinking news hole for storytelling opportunities. How can marketing leaders break past these barriers to show meaningful, measurable results that connect to recruiting and retention goals? New research points to a powerful solution: personalized, highly focused content creation and mass distribution can buck trends and confound anti-organic algorithms. Learn how applying new findings about organic social media reach, media pickup strategies, and more, drive strategic results. Speaker Colin Mathews, President, Merit Pages 1:30-2:30 pm Frenemies: Partnering with Other Public Universities in Your State While public universities in the same state often compete for students and funding as well as on the football field and basketball court, there are many times where they can advance the public university mission by working together. Learn how public universities are partnering to advance shared legislative goals, improve their state s economy, and respond to other needs of the people in the state they serve. Moderator Nancy Paton, Vice President for Communications, University at Buffalo Panelists Wes Hickman, Chief Communications Officer, University of South Carolina
