With average costs of a college education rising along with levels of student debt, lawmakers, students, and the general public are increasingly questioning the value of a postsecondary education and the need to invest in them. University leaders are faced with new expectations for a return on investment and demonstrating their institutional value to state and federal policymakers as well as the broader public. This session will discuss findings from public opinion research that identify the gaps in the expectations of universities between the public and the university community. It will also detail compelling evidence of the public benefits of public investment in postsecondary education. Following presentations, we ll hold breakout sessions to help further the development of messages and more effective conversations about the role and contributions of higher education to society. Ologie, the lunch sponsor for APLU s Council on Strategic Communications 2017 summer meeting, found that there was a big gap in research on this generation as it pertains to their motivations, communication preferences, aspirations, attitudes, and identities around the college search, so they conducted a research study to do just that. Every college or university has a distinct story to tell. But each institution s underlying offer an educational experience is comparable. That s why higher education brands run the risk of getting lost in a sea of sameness. To stand out and ensure their stories are heard in a distinct way, colleges and universities must explore new ways of connecting with this cohort, including understand what defines the members of this generation: family life, entertainment, education, and everything in between. What proactive steps are public universities taking to partner with students to better ensure a safe environment for the expression of free speech while making certain that their campus remains inclusive to all? How are they preparing for and responding to heated protests that can and have turned violent? Learn some ways university leaders are addressing these complicated challenges and seizing the opportunities that a more politically engaged student body presents. Innovation for the Public Good: Visit to CoMotion at the University of Washington Innovation is often accompanied by disruption that affects people and communities. So how can public universities foster innovation that supports our public missions? University of Washington Vice President for Innovation Strategy Vikram Jandhyala will discuss how UW has made inclusive innovation a central part of its mission, and how universities can drive the public good by bringing disruptors and the disrupted together. UW innovators who are using CoMotion Labs, a multi-industry incubator hosting startups inside and outside the UW community, will detail how they are working to grow their virtual reality companies. Recreational Equipment, Inc. (REI) is doing the same, strengthening relationships with its 6 million co-op members by uniting around shared values, including a commitment to sustainability. In this session at REI s flagship store, we ll hear how through initiatives like #OptOutside, its Force of Nature initiative to drive gender equity outdoors, and the fight for public lands REI is using its engagement channels to speak with its members about the issues and topics that matter, creating a community of advocates in the process. And we ll learn how universities can draw on REI s success in developing a community of advocates to activate their own networks of supporters for causes that advance institutional missions.
