2 BULLETin A THE CALIFORNIA STATE COLLEGE SAN BERNARDINO r CSCSB'S KEVIN GALLAGHER APPOINTED CSUC TRUSTEE Kevin Gallagher, Asso dated Student Body President, has been appointed to the Board of Trustees of the Califomia State University and Colleges. When named by Governor Brown last Friday, the 25- year-old senior became the second student trus- tee in the history of the board. April 7, 1978 Mr. Gallagher was the choice of the Student Presidents Assn. of the CSUC to represent ; them on the board. The final decision was. made by the governor, however, on the basis of two SOO-word essays and a personal interview with Gov. Brown's appointment secretary, Dr. Carlotta Mellon. The new trustee comes to the governing board with an inpressive background. He is currently president of the CSUC Student Presidents Assn. and has attended numerous meetings of the Board of Trustees in that capacity, speaking before the board for the 300,000 students in the system, and working with board mem bers on their committees. KeWnR. KEVIN CALLACHER A.S.g. KfieSJOKNT As a trustee, Mr. Gallagher says he will keep himself open to hear the viewpoints of others and keep in mind his responsibility to the citizens of the state. He intends to visit other CSUC campuses to maintain contacts with students. He will resign his presidency of the association because of possible conflict between that and his new trustee role. He sees no conflict, however, between his new position and his current presidency of the CSCSB associated students, now in an unprecedented second term. WASC ACCREDITATION VISIT A visitation team from the Western Association of Schools COMING APRIL 13 AND ]k and Colleges (WASC) will be on campus Thursday and Friday, April 13, 1^. This year the team will review the self-study efforts of the School of Humanities and its departments and the Physical Plant and Facilities Planning. The team will be headed by Chairman Leonard W. Rice, President Emeritus of Oregon College of Education. The four other members are Kathleen Cohen, Chairman, Dept. of Art History, San Jose State U; L.E. Cox, Vice Chancellor for Business and Finance, UC, Irvine; Frank Jimenez, Assoc. Professor, Modern Languages, U of Santa Clara and Preston Stedman, Professor of Music, Cal State U, Fullerton. In addition, Marcie Cox, doctoral student at UCLA,will be observing the visit for research on (Continued on page 2)

If requested, faculty are asked to open their classrooms to the visitors. JILL KASEN NOM HAS PH.D, IN SOCIOLOGY J. ^ Word has just been received that Jill Kasen, Assistant Professor of Sociology, has completed all of the requirements for the Ph.D. in Sociology at Rutgers University, New Jersey. Dr, Kasen, who joined the College in 1976, received her B.A. from College, New Jersey. Her dissertation was on "Portraits from the Dream: of Success in the Comic Strip, , MICHAEL O'GARA'S DAUGHTER. SON-IN-LAW KILLED IN PLANE CRASH The College has been saddened to learn of the Dawn O'Gara Adams and George Adams, daughter an s ^ of Michael O^Gara, Professor of Physical Education, Emeri tus, Mr. and Mrs. Adams died in a plane crash in Red Bluff, California, March 23 in a private Plane.piloted by Mr. Adams, a semi-retired realtor of Mount Shasta where the couple resided. The plane was flying in rain and low overcast weather. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Adams, 43, leaves four children: Patricia Delosa, 24, and Michael, 21, both of San Diego; Kathleen, of Boliva; three grandchildren, three stepchildren, a siater.colleen Kairy of San Diego, and a brother, Daniel O'Gara of Trinidad, California. e Interment was in Mount Shasta Memorial Park. HARRIS OUARTET-IN-RESIDENCE The music of Mozart, Haydn and Prokofieff^will IN EVENING CONCERT APRIL 9 performed by the Leslie I. Harris String Quartet in " an evening concert beginning at 7:30 p.m. in the Ke cital Hall of the Creative Arts Building. i Distinguished local musicians Armen Turadian, Clyda Yedinak, Victoria Shapiro and Catherine Graff make up the quartet, named in honor of the late San Bernardin community leader. Tickets for the performance are $1.50. Children and students with identification will be admitted free. ^ ^ MECHA LUNCHEON TICKETS - Tickets for the Annual Mecha Luncheon are being so^d on campus. 4 LECTURES,.. SEf^INAR.,. WORKSHOPS... FILMS. UNDERWATER FILM FESTIVAL - The exotic, dangerous and humorous world beneath the sea will be brought to campus by means of a program "From California to Cayman," to be presented at 7 p.m. in the Multi-purpose Room of the Student Union. Jack McKenney, one of the world's foremost underwater cameramen and former editor of Skin Diver Magazine, will introduce a variety of unique and spectacular dive locations and highlight the history and development of the sport. It is designed to appeal to prospective and veteran divers alike.^ Seven films will show night dives on a shipwreck, sea otters and whales frolicing, and other undersea creatures in the beautiful macro world. Students and community members are invited free of charge. (Tuesday, April 11) * * GRAPH THEORY LECTURE - Dr. Phillip Krausher, a nationally recognized authority on mathematics, will speak on "Graph Theory: Local Connectedness and Hamiltonian Cycles" Tuesday, April 11 in BI-129, at noon. All are welcome to attend the lecture, presented by the Math Department. CAREER CONVERSATION - Aspiring lawyers will have a chance to informally question a practicing attorney on Wednesday, April 12 in the Student Union Senate Room when Rene Jacober, local attorney appears in a "Career Conversation" program. Mr. Jacober, a 1968 CSCSB graduate, passed the California bar exam in Open to all interested persons. (1:30 p.m.) * * HOLOCAUST SEMINAR- A three-evening seminar focusing on the KNBC television production, "Holocaust," will be offered on campus starting April 12. The nine-hour TV show, beginning April 16, will dramatize the events surrounding the massacre of six million Jews in Germany. The course will meet from 7 to 10 p.m. in LC-500 Wednesday, April 12; Thursday, April 20 and Monday, April 24. Dr. Robert Blackey, Professor of History, will coordinate the course. Guest lecturers who will examine some of the historical, theological and psycho-social implications surrounding this annihilation include Elliott Barkan (history); Nathan Kravetz (education); Stephen Bowles (continuing education). Other guest lecturers include church leaders and educators in San Bernardino and adjacent communities. Cost is $40; two units of extension credit upon completion. Noncredit fees are $15 for each person, $25 per couple and $5 for each extra family member. Call 7527 for additional information. MASTERY LEARNING, ETC. - Discussion by Vivien Bull and Carol Goss on material gleaned from workshop on competency-based programs, nastery learning and the problems of introducing the ideas to academia. Reference materials are available. * * SPANISH DRAMA LECTURE - An illustrated lecture on Spanish drama as popular culture will be given here Thursday, April 13, by Dr. Everett W. Hesse, formerly of use and U of Maryland, now a distinguished professor at San Diego State U. He will speak at noon in the Student Union and again at 8 p.m. in LC-500. A slide presentation will accompany each talk. The College and public are invited free of charge. The lecture will focus on 17th century Spanish theatre. Robert IHackey (History) spoke on "Witchcraft: History and Perspective" to an English class at San Horgonio High School on April 4. Lloyd Campbell (Education) is speaking today to a psychology class at Alta Loma High School on the topic "Getting Close to People." Mike Clarke (Administration) is lecturing today on "Northern Ireland: The Last Colony" at the First Presbyterian Church in Inland. Russell DeRemer (Physics) discussed "A Perspective on Earthquakes" with an Eisenhower High School biology class, April 4. Gary Ray (Administration) lectured on "The Role of Business in the Quality of Life at. the ^ril 6 meeting of the American Assn. of Business Women in San Bernardino. f Mike Rose (Relations with Schools) spoke on "College '78-To Go or Not to Go" to a Hemet High School consumer class on April 4. professional activities G. Keith Dolan (Education) led two workshops on evaluation at the recent Cal. Demonstration Programs in Reading and Mathematics in San Jose, Marvin Frost (Geography) was interviewed by Roger Brandt of KVCR-TV News (Channel 24) on the topic of "Climatic Change." This interview will be shown in the near future as part of a newsmagazine program on that station. Julius Kaplan (Art) lectured to the Docents of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art on French Academic and Avant-garde Realism in the Second Half of the Nineteenth tury," March 27. Robert O'Brien, David Shichor and David Decker (Sociology) had a paper accepted for presentation by the Research Committee for the Sociology of Deviance & Social Control of the Int. Soc. Assn., for the World Congress of Sociology, Uppsala, Sweden next August. The paper is entitled "Urban Structure & Criminal Victimization of the Elderly." Pres. John Pfau chaired an accreditation team from the Western Assn. of Schools S Colleges evaluating Dominican College, one of nine affiliated institutions in the Graduate Theological Union in Oakland. The five day visit concluded April 6. Jeffrey Walker (English) has been awarded a grant from the American Council of Learned Societies to continue work on his book on Benjamin Church, the l8th cen tury American poet. Bill Aussieker (ASministration) had a review of a book, pupilcailons> dents & Collective Bargaining, by Shark, Brouder & Assoc. published in The Journal of Higher Education, JanT^eb., M.R, Burgess (Library) was the subject of an article in the Spring, 1978 issue of.
