This month's Madonna Herald features these stories and more: Students needed for alternative spring breaks Community invited to daily Masses Student Senate elections in April Movie reviews of Split, Silence and 20th Century Women Mark your calendar! for the exhibit We Don't Want Them: Race and Housing in Metropolitan Detroit, , that will be on display in the Franciscan Center, Monday through Friday, Feb Part of the Race2Equity Community Engagement Campaign, the exhibit helps viewers understand how the insidious effects of residential segregation, have created two distinct and co-existing paradigms racial exclusivity in white communities and racial inequality in African American communities. The exhibit has toured throughout Metro Detroit since 2010, and serves as a tool to begin looking deeper into the issues of racial equity in Metro Detroit. In addition to the exhibit, there will be a Crossing Boundary Lines panel discussion and reception, Friday, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the Gathering Space, when panelists will examine where people live, work and travel as it relates to themes addressed by the exhibit.
4 BLG STUDENTS HOST COLLEGE 101 DAY Madonna Messenger Students from Pontiac Academy participated in a "College 101 Day" hosted by students in Madonna's Bridging Lost Gaps (BLG) program. The high school students learned about life as a college student and the many valuable opportunities offered at Madonna University. BLG student leaders shared their personal and academic experiences in an effort to inspire their guests to continue their education after high school. "Regardless of your GPA or ACT score, college is necessary to achieve your goals," Earl Short, BLG student leader and sociology major, told the The bookstore now features School of Business gear. 5 ULTIMATE CRUSADERS CROWNED! Madonna Messenger Congratulations are in order for the winners of the 2017 Ultimate Crusader Pageant held last Thursday in Kresge Hall. Earl Short and Maria Rigato were chosen as Ultimate Crusaders because of their school spirit, academic achievements, and service in the community. Short is majoring in psychology with an aging studies minor, and Rigato is a music education major. Cruzer the Crusader was on hand to congratulate the winners. PRAYER WITH THE MUSLIM COMMUNITY Come with us as we act upon our commitment to interfaith dialogue, peace, and respect. Join us in prayer with the Muslim community at a local mosque. Women, please be sure to cover your legs and arms and bring a covering for your head. We do this every third Friday (next one is March 17) from 1pm to 3pm. We leave together from the Franciscan Center. BECOME A STUDENT SENATOR Student Senate Applications Available Applications to run for the Student Senate are now available. Students interested in running for President, Vice-President, or for a senate seat should visit the Students tab on MyPortal and view the information on the Student Senate page. All the election materials are online because Student Senate highly regards the Franciscan value of reverence for creation and is committed to sustainability. Applications are due Friday, March 3. 5

Madonna Messenger At the end of January, the Michigan Catholic ran a story about how Madonna's Bridging Lost Gaps (BLG) program aims to set young minorities on the path to success. Delvontá Pinkston, a senior communications major, Connie Tingson-Gatuz, vice president for student affairs and mission integration and Brett Jordan, director of the BLG program, were interviewed for the article. 12 Conversation Partners 12 Unity Productions Foundation, in partnership with the Franciscan Action Networkand the Prince Alwaleed bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding at Georgetown University, is hosting a two-day leadership summit to build peace and strengthen relations between Muslims and Christians across the United States. Leveraging the powerful new docudrama film produced by UPF, The Sultan and the Saint ( and inspired by the courage and peacebuilding efforts of St. Francis of Assisi and Sultan al Kamil during the height of the Crusades' deadly conflict, this summit will bring key Muslim and Christian Pastors, Imams, writers, activists, thought leaders and others together to forge positive new relationships and collaborate for good. The purpose of the summit is to develop action plans for local collaboration and best practices in promoting strategies to build relationships focused on proactively addressing Islamophobia at the local and national levels. Peace Requires Encounter: A Two-Day Summit on Building Relationships, opening on the evening of March 17th and ending on the 19th, will be held at Georgetown University in the heart of the nation's capitol. Hosted by the Prince Alwaleed bin Talal Center for Muslim-Christian Understanding, the event will center around an all- day workshop and team-building training during the day on Saturday the 18th, and then followed by a film premiere on Saturday night of UP- F's The Sultan and the Saint, a 60-minute documentary film. Following the film screening, senior faith leaders and activists will discuss the film's message and ways the two faith communities can bridge divides. Participants are being invited from around the country and will be trained in using the film in their local communities. * Attendees will be expected to help bring The Sultan and the Saint film to their community and to further expose the film to their respective network and or organization. 19 News you can use The opening for rīt, an exhibit of artwork by artists Mary and Elle Rousseaux will be held Thursday, Mar. 2 from 4:30-7 p.m. in the Madonna Art Gallery. The exhibit runs Mar. 2- Mar. 23, weekdays from 8 a.m. - 8 p.m., and Saturdays from 8 a.m. - Noon. Purchase baked goods and Haitian handmade goods at a bake sale, Wednesday, Feb. 22, from 10 a.m. - 6 p.m., in the Take 5 Lounge. All proceeds will be used to purchase medical supplies, medicine, nursing equipment, clothing, shoes and other items needed by the people of Jacmel, Haiti.
