8 A L U M N I R E C O G N I T I O N Beth Thompson Kawasaki 81 Megan Chao ALUMNA OF THE YEAR As vice president of marketing and founding member of ReBoot Accel: Career Accelerator for Women, Beth Kawasaki has a lifelong passion for the potential of all women. After a first career in marketing management of big brands like P&G, Apple, and Levi Strauss, she put her career on pause to raise a family, earn a graduate degree, and serve in community leadership. In 2015, she began a second-stage career at ReBoot helping other women return to the workforce or pursue new goals. ReBoot has expanded to six major markets. Of those clients actively seeking work, more than 80 percent have secured jobs or started businesses within six months of completing a ReBoot accelerator program GOLD ALUMNA OF THE YEAR What can be done for the street boys of Kigali, Rwanda? That was the big question that Megan Chao believes God placed before her at the end of a cross-cultural experience in Africa her junior year at SPU. What she and classmate Hilliary Anderson did was not look away. Instead they started Hope for Life Ministry, which has served 500 boys in the years since and currently houses 76 boys, every one of them destined to escape homelessness. As U.S. executive director of HFL, Megan oversees fundraising and operations in the States. HFL provides food, shelter, medical care, education, Christian witness, parental coaching, and small-business loans. In the process, families have been reunited and communities forever changed

9 A L U M N I R E C O G N I T I O N 2018 MEDALLION AWARD HONOREES David Boxley 74 Joshua Van Eaton 97 It is said that master carver David Boxley has carved more totem poles than any living artist. His work graces Disney World, the Memphis Zoo, and the Smithsonian National Museum of the American Indian in Washington, D.C. His beautiful images in masks, drums, bentwood boxes, and totems capture the spirit of the Tsimshian people of southern Alaska. David was born in Metlakatla, Alaska, and is a member of the Laxsglik or Eagle Clan. In his desire to revive and preserve the ways of his people, David also teaches the indigenous Tsimshian language of S malgyax. Along with his eldest son, he leads the Git-Hoan Dancers in performances around North America and as far away as Italy. Senior trial attorney for the U.S. Department of Justice and legal counsel to the U.S. Army Office of the Judge Advocate General, Joshua Van Eaton was named a Federal Employee of the Year for 2017 and recipient of the Service to America Medal. He most recently headed the team that successfully won the legal suit that found Volkswagen guilty of auto emissions fraud. The award for damages of $17.4 billion is the largest penalty ever assessed against a car manufacturer. Joshua was commended for doggedness in prosecuting the extremely difficult and complex case. Following the settlement earlier this year, the editorial board of The New York Times called Joshua and his team defenders of the faith in government. 14 Nominate Outstanding Alumni Each year, Seattle Pacific University alumni nominate fellow alums for the Alumnus/a of the Year and Medallion Awards.
