1 UPDATE Published in part by the Porterville College Foundation Record Night for PC Scholarships May 2013 College Celebrates 85th Commencement PHOTOS BY MO MONTGOMERY James Howell sings the PC Alma Mater at Commencement held May 10, Jamison Stadium. PHOTOS BY MO MONTGOMERY The 44th Annual Academic Scholarship and Awards Ceremony on April 26 marked a special date in PC history as more than $169,350 in scholarship monies were given away; an all time record amount (2012 was $ 117,350 ). This could not have been done without the continued support of our generous donors. A total number of 106 scholarships were given out that night, and 175 individual scholarships. The Porterville College Foundation is organized to raise funds that support educational endeavors. The Foundation Board of Directors continues to be instrumental in establishing wonderful scholarship opportunities for Porterville College and our students. Two-hundred and nineteen Porterville College graduates lined up on May 10 to celebrate their hard work over the past semesters. The PC Chorale, with conductor David Hensley and accompanist Ruth Ball, sang the National Anthem before PC President Dr. Rosa Carlson offered her congratulations to both students and friends/family. ASPC President Genevie Bunch was the student speaker. KCCD Chancellor Sandra Serrano extended her congratulations to the graduates and KCCD Board of Trustees President John Corkins presided over the conferring of degrees. A special presentation was given for See COMMENCEMENT on page 3 PC UPDATE - MAY Page 1

Virginia also serves as Mayor of Porterville. Advice to remaining faculty and staff? The opportunities for an education are laid out for students; the faculty, staff, administration, and support services at the college provide the opportunity for success; if you are willing to take the challenge. Fellow faculty or staff member who influenced you? Charlie Guerrero (he lives on in my memories..and so many others that are part of the retired PC family) PATRICK CHAN Years at PC? 23 years, Position(s) held: Professor of Information Systems and Acting Division Chair Favorite memory or experience while at PC? Scholarship and commencement ceremonies are always memorable moments. It s also exciting and fulfilling to attend students weddings, to hold their newborns, to witness their successes, and to share their joy in life. What next for you after retirement? My primary goals are to spend more time with my aging mother and to support my wife in her career pursuit. I would also like to learn new languages (both computer and human kinds) and to expand my horizon while continuing to teach at PC as an adjunct. Fellow faculty or staff member who influenced you? There are a lot of people across the PC campus that I genuinely admire from the front office to the back corner of the campus. Their leadership, devotion, and sacrifice have inspired me over the years and defined who we are as a college. Page 4 We m y
5 We lsl mis! you JACINTO GARDEA Years at PC? 21 years, Position(s) held: Professor of English and English as a Second Language Favorite memory or experience while at PC? The best memories will be the interchanges with students in the classroom; I ll also take with me a warm sense of accomplishment in having managed, while still teaching, to write a play and a text that illustrate the teaching methodology I partially developed and have found most effective. What next for you after retirement? First, I ll prepare myself to take the state translators test and then work part-time as a court translator from two or three cities in California; depending on how the length and the type of care my parents need, I would also like to teach English in a foreign country or two. Fellow faculty or staff wife Mercy, I have been clear-headed intensity, Wagstaff. She s a great member who influenced you? Besides my most influenced by the calm, steady, integrity, and generosity of Ann Marie professional role model. MERCY HERRERA Years at PC? 23 years Position(s) held: Counselor but for 20 years Matriculation Coordinator/Counselor Favorite memory or experience while at PC? Too many but our Monday staff meetings with Charlie Guerrero, traveling to conferences with Carol Wilkins, matriculation activities with Terri Gil and student workers, and my involvement with MEChA/CCM/MEDPEP What next for you after retirement? Spending time with family and friends, traveling with my soul mate Jacinto, and focusing on personal fitness. Advice to remaining faculty and staff? Keep your focus on student success and continue to build stronger relationship outside the classroom with student organizations Fellow faculty or staff member who influenced you? Charlie Guerrero, Carol Wilkins, Dr. John Collins, Lincoln Hall, Antonia Ecung, and David Bezayiff OTHER RETIREES: DAVID BEZAYIFF, RUBY IMBERT, AND DANIEL LOPEZ. PC UPDATE - MAY Page 5
