Hildreth Honoring one of Camden s own, Dr. James Hildreth, SAU Tech has set its annual Black History Celebration for February 7, 2013 at 6:00 p.m. at the Charles O. Ross Center in Camden. Dr. Hildreth was born and raised in Camden, Arkansas and was the first African American Rhodes Scholar from Arkansas in He graduated from Harvard and attended Oxford University in England where he earned his Ph.D. in immunology. Hildreth obtained his M.D. from John Hopkins and now works as the dean and professor for cellular and molecular medicine and internal medicine at the University of California. Hildreth is known for his work involving research on HIV and AIDS and the role of protein and lipids in HIV infection. He has been a leader in the effort to engage churches and faith leaders in the fight against AIDS. Tickets for the event are $18.75 per person or $ for a table. 2 Page 2 Donation The SAU Tech Foundation is pleased to announce a donation in the amount of $10,000 from Lockheed Martin. The funds are allocated as follows; $5,000 to the Lockheed Martin Scholarship Fund and $5,000 to the SAU Tech Foundation Technology Fund. For more information on how you can make a donation to the Foundation, call Dr. Corbet Lamkin, SAU Tech Chancellor, accepts a donation from Colin Sterling, Lockheed Martin Operations Manager and Deputy Site Director Faculty Brenda Hutchison Fickey Brenda Fickey is a new adjunct with the English department at SAU Tech. Besides being a writing teacher, she is also an author of three novels for middle school readers (ages 8-12), families, and reluctant readers. Recently, her fourth book Kidnapped Justice was released. The books are part of her Arkansas Oil Days Collection and are historical fiction novels loosely based on her family's history with the Smackover oil boom in the 1920s. The setting is in Frenchport and the surrounding towns (including Camden) during the oil boom days in The books are available in the SAU Tech library and for purchase through Amazon in paperback or Kindle versions. 3 Page 3 Students SAU Tech Student Leadership members received certificates in an award ceremony honoring them for their volunteer work during the fall 2012 semester. SAU Tech Employee Places in Cisco Competition Jacob Ellis, a Cisco Networking Academy student and employee at SAU Tech, demonstrated his strong IT skills and networking knowledge and was able to advance to round two of the fall 2012 Cisco NetRiders Skills Competition.

Shivers placed 2 nd in Notebook and 1 st place in Opening and Closing Ceremonies. Kaleah Hegwood placed 3 rd in Community Service. For more information about SkillsUSA go to

5 Page 5 Student Leadership Meets SAU Tech s Student Leadership Team met on January 15 to kick off the new semester. Twenty-one students and four sponsors attended the meeting. Using a Powerpoint presentation, President, Jordan Chandler, re-capped last semester s events, volunteer opportunities and activities. The group voted to allow all current members with ten volunteer hours to carry over their good-standing membership through their second semester at SAU Tech. In addition, members also voted to donate proceeds of candy gram sales to the SAU Tech Student Benevolence Fund. Upcoming events and activities were discussed, as well as volunteer opportunities such as the Black History celebration, candy grams and the Daffodil Festival. The organization is open to students at SAU Tech who go through the application process and provide a recommendation and agree to the following: Attend all monthly meetings on the 2nd Monday of each month Participate in program activities and assignments as designated by coordinator Work a minimum of 10 hours per semester Follow the mission statements, policies and procedures of the Student Leadership Program The organization provides a connection to the college and the community for students and provides students with experience that they can include on their resumes.

Intramurals Several students from SAU Tech participated in the NCCS Regional Flag Football Tournament in Hattiesburg, MS on December 1, Even though our team (after playing 2 games) was not able to advance in the tournament, the guys had a great time and represented SAU Tech well.
