Summer is coming to a close and it is slowly beginning to cool down. I hope that everyone has had a nice summer filled with unforgettable memories and lazy days. I am learning many things about life as your Worshipful Master this year. I have learned that it is more important to spend as much time enjoying what you do than doing what you have to do, simply, because we are not promised tomorrow. As most of you know we have lost a few friends over the summer to the celestial lodge above and even though it s difficult seeing them go, we know they are in a better place. My position this year has allowed me to experience so many wonderful people and share so many wonderful experiences with my Masonic family. This year, I have been able to truly see how big this fraternity is and how much Masonry impacts everything around us. So, for my younger brethren aspiring to become officers, I can tell you that it is a great journey to the East and being master is an experience that cannot be put into words. I have also learned that September is the month to rally the troops and get ready to go back to our labors as Masons. So we have many great things in front of us within the next few months. Our outdoor lodge is scheduled for Saturday, September 14 th at 7:00 p.m. We will serve dinner at 6:00 p.m. and lodge will open at 7:00 p.m. I apologize for the date change but the date in the calendar book is wrong. We are going to have a modern day military theme dating back from W.W. II to present. It is also going to be an night degree. We will be raising a Master Mason under a starry decked heaven that evening. I have also heard there will be a few campfires burning after lodge fueled by fellowship. We are also having the William Continued on page 8 Absolutely The Best D & J Handyman Services Residential & Commercial Maintenance/Repairs Electrical, Plumbing, Remodeling Landscape Design, Renovations Small job or big - we do it all Brother Don Mellen (330 ) d-jhandyman@neo.rr.com

I hope everyone has had a great summer. I remember my dad telling me long ago that the older you get the faster time goes. I never understood that until recently. Now it seems no matter how well I plan, there just isn t enough time to get things done. And this summer was a perfect example. I am sure we all had things that we wanted to do for fun or labor and just did not get to them. I have a big list of things that I wanted to get done that are not crossed off yet. Take advantage of the time we have. Use every day to its fullest! Get done what you need and enjoy what you can. Smell the roses and tell loved ones that you care. Larry Haines, Commander Wm. 13 September, 2013 THE MASONIC BULLETIN Page 13 Editors Comment Most Brethren must admit it has been rather exciting and a whirlwind of excitement having a Grand Master close by. It has been a long time since we had a local Mason serving as Grand Master. We must travel all the way back to Most Worshipful Brother Thomas Zahler for the enjoyment of a local man. Even Most Worshipful Brother Dan Iceman was close by but not really a 21 st Masonic District Brother. Having a local man brings out the best in officers and brethren. They so called get on the band wagon and devote their talents and time to making things a really big success. Never in my journey as a Mason has this been more evident than at the 2013, 21 st Masonic District Grand Master s Reception. I was rather disappointed that all 21 st district Masons could not attend as you missed a monumentally successful, change of pace dinner and reception. It was casual, no tuxedoes nor top hats. Sat in a luau form, all wore Hawaiian shirts and the few who wore neck ties, were urged to shed them early in the evening. Grand Lodge Officers were ordered to remove their white dinner jackets, worn over black Hawaiian shirts, early in the evening. My big regret was that the June-July-August Masonic Bulletin was already in print and I could not get to my computer to put this to essay form sooner. If you are reading this article Most Worshipful, it is not my place to congratulate the Grand Master but, boy-oh-boy, it sure was a great party and the officers and helpers did a bang up job. Masonic functions need not be Matter-to-fact, stuffy, boring, straight laced, stiff functions; even lodges could loosen up a bit. I never thought the brethren should be entertained at lodge meetings but, they shouldn t be bored to death either. Programs don t have to be games or competitive, they just need to be educational, interesting and geared to today s world keeping in mind that most brethren attending are over 50 years old. Whenever a brother feels it more enjoyable to set and wiggle his toes in front of the TV rather than attend lodge, we must take note and try to change. Oh, I realize that the very brother who stays away today because of boredom, is the very brother who will resist any change to make the lodge more interesting; but remember, we ran the straight laced lodge years ago because we did not know any different. That was how it was done in those days and we lived with it because we loved Masonry. The age of fast communication has changed all that. Oh my, yes it is great to have a Grand Master, smiling with a firm hand shake, who is right here among us. One who remembers every ones name and realizes that the brethren asked him to serve them as their Grand Master. Your Editor, Bob FAIRCREST DOOR Cleveland Ave SW Garage Door Sales and Service Bro. Freemasonry is the oldest, and by far, the largest fraternal order in the world. Its lodges stretch around the globe, and like the British Empire, it might well be said that the sun never sets upon the Masonic Lodge. Fraternity means an association of brothers, and that is exactly what Freemasonry is, a society of friends and brothers. The origins of Freemasonry date back to the dawn of civilization. The Egyptians practiced many of the philosophies known to modern Freemasonry and men practiced many of the operative skills as guilds formed in Europe during the Tenth Century. Written records of modern Freemasonry have been kept since 1717 with the formation of a general governing body called a Grand Lodge in England. It is not a secret society in that its Temples are openly marked and almost everyone in the community knows where they are located. The Grand Lodge publishes a roster of the members of every lodge in the jurisdiction. Many of the lodges have individual bulletins or newsletters which carry the names of the officers and members, as well. Thus it is, in the strictest sense of the word, a society with secrets, and these are limited to its obligation, its modes of recognition, such as pass words and grips, etc. and certain parts of its ritual. It is religious in character but is not a religion. It is founded upon the basic principle of the Brotherhood of Man under the Fatherhood of God, and everyone who comes to its lodges must express a particular belief about God, for this is the privilege of each individual and is not infringed upon by our Fraternity. Freemasonry practices selective charities, founded on the principle of brotherly need which is not applicable in all cases that appear similar. No member has a specific claim upon the society for its charity, for this is not a right acquired by becoming a member of the society, rather it is a privilege.
