The awards were given out last Sunday. This year s honorees are Katie Mauro, who attends Queen of Peace High School in North Arlington, and Bill Arndt. Katie has been a steady participant in our Parish s Youth Group, which is run by Tara Freschi. Bill is the leader of the music group at our Family Mass, which is celebrated every Sunday at 10:30 in Msgr. Walsh Hall. Congratulations to Katie and Bill! Last Sunday afternoon Holy Family Church hosted a joyful Mass to mark the fiftieth anniversary of the ordination of Fr. Benedict J. Groeschel, C.F.R. Father Benedict, who was born in Jersey City, has become internationally known for his television appearances on EWTN, for his many illuminating and inspiring writings, and for his part in beginning the Franciscan Friars of the Renewal, a thriving young community whose members observe a strict rule that guides them in faithfully living out the traditional ideals of St. Francis of Assisi in our time. The Friars, whose apostolic work concentrates on helping the poorest members of society, were founded in 1987 and already have more than a hundred members. A community of religious sisters began the following year. Fr. Glen Sudano, a past Servant (or Superior) of the community has pointed out that From day one, our desire was not to create a new form of religious life or observance but rather to set ourselves securely upon our own ancient foundations. For this very reason, none of the original eight Friars of the Renewal see themselves as founders. We do not see ourselves as prophetic architects but rather as simple builders. The holy Gospels are our map, the saints are our guides, and the sacraments are our strength for the journey. Fr. Benedict, who is well known for his enjoyable wit, was very serious when it came to making an occasion out of his golden anniversary as a priest. In a recent interview, he made it clear that he is not in favor or celebrating priests anniversaries. As he put it in his inimitable style: I totally dislike the whole thing. I never wanted to have any celebration of the 50 th. I don t believe in these things. Ordained priests should celebrate their anniversary by putting a rope around their neck and ashes on their heads and asking God forgiveness for their sins. But when Chris Bell, who runs the Good Counsel Homes for poor single mothers who have chosen to keep their children, asked him to consent to the celebration to raise funds for the charity, which Fr. Benedict helped found, he instantly said yes. Msgr. David Hubba

Over the past 4 years I have been working with remedial readers in the Newark schools. You have been generous in donating used furniture (living room type chairs) that I utilize in creating a reading zone in my classroom. I am once again in need of a few. If you have a refrigerator that works that you won t be needing, please consider a donation to a family who cannot afford to replace the one they had which is no longer working. They are currently surviving with a minifridge and a local bakery helping them with ice. Basketball yes it is that time. Currently I have 30 new freshmen who have expressed an interest in playing, many for the first time. In the past you have helped me to give these girls their first basketballs. If possible, I am looking for donated new basketballs for their use (cost is between $15 and $20). If you can help with any of these please contact Bill Arndt at
