The mission will take place this Sunday through Wednesday, April 18-21, with 7:30 sessions each evening and, for those who can t come in the evening, afternoon ones following the 12:10 Masses of Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. Bill, a former businessman from Howell, N.J., founded the New Jersey Good News School of Evangelization with his wife Cheryl. He has given more than 300 parish missions and retreats in the United States and abroad (including in Ireland and Belize). He will speak at this weekend s Masses to invite you to the mission. I am sure that all who attend it will be inspired by his message and strengthened in their faith. About 3% of India s one billion people are Christian. Of these, slightly more than half (17.5 million) are Catholic, part of a continuity from the Church s earliest days. They trace their possession of the Faith to the missionary efforts of St. Thomas the Apostle, whom tradition says brought it to their people in the early 50s. Many of the approximately 54,000 Indian Catholics in our Archdiocese practice their religion in the Syriac language, according to the Syro-Malabar Rite. Today s name for Malabar, on India s southwestern coast, is Kerala, one of 25 Indian states and the home of our Father Matthew Kunnath, who has worked at St. Mary s since At next Saturday s 5:30 Mass, we will be celebrating the important milestone of his 50 th anniversary of ordination. After Mass, there will be a reception in Monsignor Walsh Hall (the lower church), where all are welcome to congratulate Father Matthew and to enjoy refreshments. Father Matthew has had many important and challenging assignments as a priest. In his first nine years, he was a touring missionary, an associate pastor and the head of an orphanage. Over the next sixteen, he became a pastor, the principal of three schools, the rector of his diocese s cathedral and the chaplain and administrator of a hospital. During this time he was given other major diocesan responsibilities, serving as Director of Catholic Relief Services and head of both the Family Life Apostolate and the Vocations department. In addition to all these jobs, he was also appointed a Diocesan Consultor and ran the Diocese of Tezpur for four months during the absence of the Bishop. In 1980 Father Matthew came to the Archdiocese of Newark, working as a hospital chaplain, first at Pollack Hospital in Jersey City for several months, then at St. James Hospital in Newark for seventeen years. He has been at St. Mary s since 1996, striving to live up to his motto, Life is not worth it unless you do some good for others. In fulfilling his parish duties and in his many efforts through the Father Matthew Kunnath Charitable Foundation, he has worked hard to live up to the ideals these words express. Father Matthew has built over forty homes for poor families in India, has helped more than two hundred Keralite families to begin life in America, and has been instrumental in bringing many Indian nurses to our country. (It is hard to go to any hospital in our area and not find at least one of them working there! When Father Matthew was at Beth Israel Hospital in Newark recently for his cardiac surgery, one of those nurses was at the ICU where he was treated a wonderful example of the saying in Ecclesiastes 11, 1: Cast your bread upon the waters; after a long time you may find it again. ) 1
