1 MD 17N News A MONTHLY NEWSLETTER FOR THE LIONS OF KANSAS DISTRICT N Issue 07 January 2014 Happy 2014 to you all! A message from the Governor January is always the month of the Mid-Winter Rally for Kansas Lions. It is an exciting time because many things go on at the rally, it is not just meetings. We have the Environmental Photo Contest judging. When attending the rally you can vote on your favorite photo of the 5 Districts entries. The winning photo will go on to International and be judged there, who know Kansas might have a winner. There is also many exhibitors in attendance as well as information on various topics. There will be the Silent and Live Auction for a fundraiser of the Kansas Lions Band Foundation. It puts Lion against Lion as to who can out bid who for those great items at the live auction and the plentiful filled unique baskets for the silent auction. There is also Seminars for Idea Exchange of Service Projects and one on Fundraisers, who of us couldn't use more ideas of what we can do in our Lions Clubs. I think all of our clubs will benefit from us sitting in on both of the seminars. Oh, I would be remiss if I didn't mention that we have a distinguished International Director from Virginia in that of Dr. Hauser Weiler. He will have a special seminar time during the Mid-Winter Rally as well as the guest speaker for the dinner on Sat. night. So, plan now to attend for meeting new or your fellow Lions. You will find agenda and reservation form in this newsletter. A reminder this month continues our Global Service Action Campaign of Relieving the Hunger. Look forward to information in the February newsletter about the upcoming District 17N Convention March 29 and 30. Make special note about the article on Just Ask special workshop coming on Sat., Feb. 22 in Wichita at the Kansas Lions State Office. Sign-up early as it is limited to the amount of space available. 4 CLUB OFFICERS The Just Ask! workshop will be held on Saturday February 22, at the Lions State Office in Wichita. The time will be from 10am until 4pm with lunch. How many times have you heard Lions say the easiest way to get a new member is Just Ask! However, when you look at declining membership numbers-at the end at the end of the year when clubs wisely cleaned up their membership rolls-you know it is not as simple as just asking. Some are reluctant to ask or may feel they don t have the skills to really approach about becoming a member. What? If you want to improve your asking skills, Kansas Lions have just the opportunity for you! Lions Club International is providing Kansas MD17 with a presenter for a Just Ask workshop, Past International Director Ken Bird from Australia. The starting and ending time will allow Lions from anywhere in the state to drive to Wichita on Saturday Morning and return home the same evening. Who should attend? Top priorities for attendees would be current district governors and vice district governors as well as GMT and GLT coordinators at the district and state levels. Mileage reimbursement will be available for those individuals if they request. Any other interested Lion is encouraged to attend, but space is limited so reservations must be made. Contact Linda McCormick at the State Office as soon as you know that you will attend. She will let us know when the maximum number is reached; interested individuals who contact her after that point will be put on a waiting list. PID Bird has conducted this workshop in multiple locations with positive results. This is a great opportunity for Kansas Lions to hone their recruiting skills. Watch for additional information at Mid Winter 4 Rally and in newsletter!!!!!!!

6 Kansas Lions Band Foundation does not reject anyone s application, regardless of their experience level. HAS YOUR CLUB CONTACTED YOUR HIGH SCHOOL MUSIC DEPT./ BAND DIRECTOR ABOUT HAVING A BAND MEMBER ATTEND IN JUNE? 2014 KANSAS LIONS BAND PROGRAM OPPORTUNITIES State Band: Kansas State University, June 3-7, 2014 (Concert Band) International Band: Toronto, Canada, July 1-8, 2014 (Marching Band) Dear Band Directors & 2013 Kansas Lions Band Students: We are asking for your assistance in getting the word out about the opportunities for students to participate in the 2014 Kansas Lions Band programs. Please make as many copies of this notice as you need. Additional information will be available on our website and in a multi-page flyer scheduled to be sent out at the beginning of January. Below is just some basic information and cost for both programs. Every Kansas High School band student is eligible to attend. We do not reject anyone s application, regardless of their experience level. They just need to be a current Freshman Senior (we even have an occasional 8th grader participate, with prior approval of Band Committee Chairs). Kansas Lions State Band (Concert): The 2014 State Band will be held at Kansas State University under the direction of Dr. Frank Tracz. Registration will start at noon on June 3rd. There will be two performances: Ensembles and Jazz Band on Friday night and the full concert band on Saturday morning. Every student will participate in the concert band, but they must try out and be selected for the Jazz Band (if they wish to do so). Cost of the camp will be $ per student; fee covers all meals (starting Tuesday evening), lodging, and instructor fees. Kansas Lions International Band (Marching): The 2014 International Band is slated to travel to Toronto, Canada and will be under the direction of Robert Foster. Students wanting to be part of the International Band must also participate in the State Band (this also includes those students wanting to be part of the color guard/flags). International Band students will come to K-State on Sunday June 1st at noon. This will give the band two days of rehearsal time prior to the State Band students reporting in. They will also rehearse on June 30th, prior to departing for Toronto on July 1st (location TBD). The eight day/seven night trip to Toronto includes two nights in Chicago (with sightseeing planned) and one night in Springfield, IL on the return leg of the trip. While in Toronto, the group will tour Chinatown, dinner and show at Medieval Times, tour Eaton Centre, Casa Loma, CN Tower, and spend the entire day at Canada s Wonderland (theme park/water park), among other venues. Cost of the International Band trip is $1, (this does not include the $ for State Band). The first 75 students to sign up for the trip will receive a $ scholarship from the Kansas Lions Band Foundation, making their cost of the Toronto trip only $1, Students will need a certified birth certificate and ID, or a passport to enter Canada. Both of these programs are a wonderful opportunity for band students (at any level of experience) to receive specialized instruction that will aid them in their musical careers forever. On behalf of the Kansas Lions Band Committee, thank you for your continued support of our band program. If we can answer any other questions, please contact me at 7400 NW Ayr Road, Potwin, Kansas 67123, (620) or by at hsneidha@wheatstate.com. Respectfully, PCC Hans and Lion Shari Neidhardt State & International Band Committee, Co-Chairs 6

The theme for the contest is Peace, Love and Understanding. The kits are $10.95 plus shipping, handling and applicable sales tax. They can be ordered from Lions Clubs International between January 15, 2014 until October 1, If you need more information contact our District Chairman for Peace Poster--Lion Charlie Davis or 13 Remember Lions promote Literacy Around the World with the Reading Action Program There are nearly 800 m i l li o n p e o p l e around the world today who cannot read. This fact is astonishing given how important one s ability to read is for learning and development. Literacy not only forms the basis for individual academic, occupational, and social success, but it can also empower communities to fight poverty, reduce child mortality, achieve gender equality, a n d e n s u r e p e a c e democracy. a n d

14 From the editor-- Presidents & Secretaries share with your fellow club members the newsletter each month. No doubt some do not have an address. Bring a few copies to your meetings. Share the newsletter with members that have . Your club list will be more accurate than what the district has on record. As I travel and visit with Lions Members they are not fully aware of the activities & services Lions of Kansas support. It makes me personally proud to be a Kansas Lions Club member.
