4 Johnnie B. Watson President LeMoyne-Owen College Mr. Johnnie B. Watson earned a Bachelors of Arts degree from LeMoyne-Owen College in 1960 and a Master s Degree from Indiana University in In his early days at the College, he served as President of the Future Teachers of America and President of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity. In 2001, he was awarded the Honorary Doctor of Laws degree from LeMoyne-Owen College for his contributions to education over 43 years. President Watson began his career in the Memphis City Schools in 1960 as a social studies teacher at Carver High School. After holding several positions in central office administration, he was promoted to Deputy Superintendent in On retiring from the Memphis City Schools in 1992, he accepted a teaching position at Rhodes College. He was later appointed Chair of the Department of Education and Distinguished Associate Professor. His lifetime commitment and dedication to education were deciding factors when the Memphis Board of Education unanimously appointed him to the role of Superintendent where he served from President Watson served on the Board of Trustees of LeMoyne-Owen College from 2000 until he was unanimously appointed to serve as Interim President on August 16, On September 19, 2008, he was unanimously appointed to serve as the 11 th President of LeMoyne-Owen College. During his tenure as President, the Men s Magicians basketball team became SIAC Champions in President Watson s Top Accomplishments include: Exceeded budget projections by $1 million Secured $7.7 million in government and corporate grants Established Office of Sponsored Programs Established Center for Urban Leadership Unprecedented enrollment growth of 23 percent Implemented campus beautification Instituted multi-media recruitment campaign Created environment for high campus morale President Watson is an active member of Mt. Moriah-East Baptist Church. He is married to Loretta Jones Watson, retired credit manager at Fed Ex, and the father of two adult children (one deceased). 5 William B. Anderson Athletic Director and Head Coach Men s Basketball William Anderson, is the Athletic Director and Men s Head Basketball Coach at LeMoyne-Owen College. Coach Anderson is a native Memphian and was a standout basketball forward at the College while earning his bachelors degree in Social Science (class of 1997). From , Coach Anderson was the College s Women s Basketball coach as well as the Head Men s and Women s Tennis coach. During this time he was able to recruit young men and women student-athletes that were talented on the court as well as in the classroom. Twenty student-athletes made the All SIAC team including one being named Most Valuable Player, one freshman of the year, one NCAA Division II All American, and eight named to the SIAC All Academic Team. During his tenure, eighty five percent of the student-athletes under his supervision have earned their degrees. Coach Anderson was named the 2006 SIAC Coach of the Year Anderson has been involved in many community activities. He is a member of Gideon #16 Prince Hall Masons, a life member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., serves on the Board of Directors for the Youth of Memphis Competitors Association, served as a member of the Memphis and Shelby County Sports Authority, serves on the USA Basketball Men s Development Committee, Sullivan Awards Committee, is a member of the Nike Grassroots Basketball Community, is a AAU Boys Basketball National Commissioner, is the Southeastern AAU Tennessee Boys Basketball Director, a life member of the national and local LeMoyne-Owen College Alumni Association and currently is the 2nd Vice President of the LOC National Alumni Association. Through his professional affiliations, Coach Anderson has had the opportunity to work with over 200 student athletes who have continued their careers at the collegiate level and 23 athletes who have played in the NBA as well as many others who have played professionally overseas. Coach Anderson also helped coach the USA Men s Basketball Youth Development Team to a gold medal finish in 2005 during an International competition. The young men and women who excelled in their chosen professions after leaving his programs have enriched Anderson s career. Coach Anderson believes that if you coach them you get them for a season but if you teach them you get them for life. 3

6 Lady Magicians Coaching Staff Head Coach Assistant Coach Myquita Mackey is a proud LeMoyne-Owen College alum. She has been blessed with the talent, love and enjoyment to play the game of basketball. I remember watching the University of Memphis basketball team on television with my dad when I was 8 year old and he loved Elliot Perry. I went outside that day and began shooting on my dad s basketball goal and haven t dropped the ball since she explained. She graduated from Northside high school in May of During her high school basketball career, she was nominated for best of the preps and was one of the top leaders in the city and the nation in scoring and rebounding. She also graduated from Southwest Tennessee Community College formerly known as Shelby State Community College in May of During her junior college career, she led her team in scoring and rebounding where she received the honor of being a two-time JUCO All American. Julia Turner a native of Memphis, TN and former studentathlete of LeMoyne-Owen College will be serving her first year as Assistant Women s Basketball Coach and Head Volleyball Coach. She left LeMoyne-Owen and obtained a bachelor s of science degree from DeVry University, Memphis. Prior to returning to LeMoyne-Owen College as a coach, Turner spent time as a volunteer coach for co-ed volleyball and youth basketball teams in the Memphis Park Commission and recreational leagues while mentoring teens and young adults in life skills on and off the court. As she volunteered, she learned of and embraced her passion for serving others through coaching, training, supervising, mentoring and working to help people in need. Her leadership style is one that is mimicked by a quote that serves as her motto: "If a man is to shed the light of the sun upon other men, he must first of all have it within himself." Romain Rolland She has continued her success here at Lemoyne- Owen as well. Her first year here she received Newcomer of the Year in the SIAC Conference and most valuable player on the team. She also was one of the top leaders in rebounding in the nation. She also has been blessed to be named a Division II All- American here at LeMoyne-Owen College. She graduated in 2006 and since has continued to stay around. She started out as a volunteer student assistant in 2002 for the women s basketball team and went on to become the Assistant Women s basketball Coach. Now she is pleased that she can pass on day to day wisdom and basketball knowledge that she has gained over the years to future student- athletes. 4

7 Lady Magicians Support Staff Sports Information Director Athletic Trainer Jerry Dover Jr. is the proud son of the late great Jerry Dover Sr. and Edith Dover. Jerry has many strong ties with the LeMoyne-Owen family as his father attended LeMoyne-Owen College, played basketball under the legendary Head Coach Jerry Johnson from and the College retired his jersey into the Basketball Hall of Fame. He later went on to play for the American Basketball Association (ABA) with the Memphis Pros and was the shortest player to ever play in the ABA. Jerry Dover Jr. graduated from Germantown High School and chose to attend local Southwest Tennessee Community College to play under the legendary Head Coach Verties Sails. While playing under Coach Verties Sails, Jerry tied a Southwest single season record with 9 steals in a single game, completed the requirements to make the Dean s list and received his Associate s degree in General Studies. From there Jerry went up the road to Jackson, Tennessee to play basketball for Lane College under Coach J. L. Perry. While attending Lane College and being a student athlete, Jerry earned his Bachelor s degree in Criminal Justice and also graduated Cum Laude. Brandy Dodge is a Certified Athletic Trainer, graduated from Middle Tennessee State University in 1999 with her degree in athletic training. She has spent the past ten years working as an athletic trainer in high school, collegiate, and clinical settings. She has also been employed with the Memphis Orthopedic Group for the last 3 1/2 years. Although she has spent the past two years working with the Magicians, Ms. Dodge has joined the LeMoyne Owen Athletic Department this year as head athletic trainer. Equipment Manager Quinton Duck Harrison, a Senior majoring in Criminal Justice. He is a student volunteer who is always willing to assist the Lady Magicians Basketball team. He has obtained an Associate s Degree in Law Enforcement and chose LeMoyne-Owen College because he wanted to have the HBCU experience. Because of his volunteer work with the team, he also aspires to become Certified Physical Therapist as well as a Certified Massage Therapist. He is striving to become a defense attorney and own his own Massage Company. A native of Harvey, Illinois, he is the son of Greg Thomas and graduated from Morton High School. He began his college career at King College. He has been a team volunteer for four year and enjoys the coaches, players and cheerleaders. 5

She is the proud daughter of Lynden and Schnora Gardiner and is from Freeport, Grand Bahamas, Bahamas. She is a graduate of Jack Hayward High and is a fourth year student at L.O.C.. Her favorite athlete is Dwayne Wade. Future Goals: to become a chemist at Johnson & Johnson and a Forensic Scientist. Amber Slingshot: Johnson is a Senior majoring in Computer Science. She is the daughter of Martha Murrell and Alvin Johnson and is from Jackson, Mississippi. She is a graduate of Jack William H. Lanier High. She began her college experience at Tougaloo College..
