3 PROGRAM OBJECTIVES: A) To introduce participants to various aspects of life in Africa as seen in the history, economy, the arts, culture, social changes and political development of the country or countries visited. B) To enable professionals and students interested in the African pluriverse to pursue their interests through direct contact with the mother continent of all humanity. C) To offer a non-traditional educational experience as the best means of dispelling some, if not all, the stereotypes developed in Western societies about life and culture of Africans. D) To provide an educational alternative for realizing personal growth and accepting the responsibility of a member of the human race. E) A critical term paper of not less than 12 typed pages, on any topic of the student s choice. (Must be related to Ghana- See Academic Content below) 100 points. ACADEMIC CONTENT: There are three parts to this course. The first part of this course consists of orientation sessions; background reading; and a 5-page paper reflecting on students interest in Ghana and/or other nations in Africa, a summary of the background reading, and a tentative project idea for the research paper. Papers are due 22 December 2017 by 4PM. The second part consists of a field trip to Ghana, West Africa, which includes visits to areas of cultural, political, educational, social, and historical significance. Participants in this course will attend lectures from various departments of the University of Ghana at Legon. Students should prepare weekly reflections during the trip as part of the participation grade. Summaries due: 4, 11 & 17 January 2018 by 8PM. The third part of this course is a critical research paper of not less than twelve pages on any topic related to Ghana. These papers could be based on Ghana's educational system, contemporary Ghanaian women, Nkrumah's Ghana, the military in development/under-development, chieftaincy, foreign policy from , Ghana and Pan Africanism, the IMF and Ghana, Pan-Africanism and the evolution of modern Africa, class and Ghanaian society, the African Diaspora and Africa, Ghanaian traditional and popular music, etc. Each student's paper must be typed, double-spaced, with footnotes reflecting not less than five sources consulted; the instructor insists on well-developed essays, including style, clarity, syntax and insight. Papers are due 02 March 2018 by 4PM. 4 GRADING NOTES: Submit all assignments in Microsoft Word. They should be free of grammatical errors, doublespaced, and typed in Times New Roman, 12-point font, with page numbers centered in the footer. Summaries can be informal, journal/diary style entries, but must follow formatting guidelines.
