2 Countdown to St. Louise Summerfest We ve been through the heat wave and have been enjoying the cool down. Many parishioners are now returning from their family vacations. It almost feels like time for our annual parish picnic. But not so fast because St. Louise Summerfest begins in four days! This week our campus will go through quite a transformation. Carnival rides will appear in the south parking lot and a spacious beer garden tent and a raised platform stage with lighting will be erected in the north lot across from the rectory. Food vendor tents and portable toilets will also be available in the north lot. The smell of food vendors and live music begins Thursday evening and continues each night through Sunday. Of course, this means a disruption to our parking for weekend Masses. (More about parking below) Summerfest is an opportunity for St. Louise parish to open our doors to the greater community. Many who come will be here for the first time. We invite you to bring your family, friends and neighbors and ask that we be welcoming to everyone in attendance. There really is something for everyone with rides for the younger kids as well as those brave souls who like to go for a spin. On the main stage, the music spans several genres of music including jazz, classic rock, acoustic folk sounds and a little alternative. See the back of the bulletin for a full list of bands and schedule. Admission to Summerfest is free, with rides, raffles, food and beverage available for purchase. Unlimited Carnival Rides A discounted $40 Mega-Pass for unlimited carnival rides is available for pre-purchase on our website at ($50 at event). Purchases must be made by Wednesday evening to receive the $10 discount. The Mega-pass is good all four days of Summerfest a real bargain! Volunteers Still Needed We re thankful for the many volunteers who have already committed their time. What can you do? Help is still needed to serve in the beer garden and St. Louise cafe, sell raffle tickets, patrol the neighborhood to keep it free of debris and emptying garbage. There will be something for everyone with a few hours to give. Contact Carmen Casas or Greg Ripoli to sign up for a time slot. Plan Ahead for Parking and Mass Attendance Summerfest is projected to be the major fundraiser for our parish and school this year. It will be both excitingly new and challenging at the same time. Parking will be limited around the parish and attending Mass will require a greater distance to walk. Parking will be restricted across the street from the parish on the east side of Raymond and the west side of Harrison and 30 th street in front of church (between Raymond and Harrison) will be closed for most of the weekend. Please plan your commute time accordingly. The Summerfest will close on Saturday from 5-6pm during evening Mass. See you there! DVD s The Religious Ed office still has some DVD s from this year s First Holy Communion available for sale at $10 each. Call the RE office if interested in purchasing a DVD. CHICAGO TRIBUNE AD The Archdiocese of Chicago placed the following fullpage ad in the Chicago Tribune on June 26: Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion or prohibiting the free exercise thereof The freedom to practice one s religion publicly without government interference is one of America s most cherished freedoms. The Federal Government s current HHS Mandate requires Catholic institutions to violate the very religious beliefs that move them to help the poor, educate young people and care for the sick. The government has told Catholic social service organizations, universities, and hospitals that they no longer qualify as religious institutions. This is an unprecedented intrusion of government in the free exercise of religion in America. 4 GOODBYE, MARY After working in our school office as bookkeeper whiz for 38 years, Mary Perret has left St. Louise School. She has been the familiar face in the office, known and loved by thousands of students and parents over the years. As an expression of our gratitude to Mary, there will be a celebration for her on Sunday, July 29. Parishioners, parents, students and alumni are invited to attend the 11:00 a.m. Mass followed by a reception in the Parish Center. Stop by to express your appreciation and wish her well. MISSIONARY VISITS COMBONI CENTER Tracy Doyle, a Comboni Lay Missionary, has been working in Ethiopia since January She will visit the Comboni Mission Center on Tuesday, July 17 at 7:00 p.m. to give a presentation. Tracy works in the Diocese of Awassa, and has a beautiful video to share and stories to tell from her experience working in the Diocese and teaching at the Comboni high school. There will be snacks and time for socializing with Tracy at the conclusion of her presentation. Join us for a very interesting evening. All are welcome. Call for more information or to RSVP. Shirley has also been a Teen Club adviser for 13 years and a shining example to our teens of what service to others is all about.
