1 Western High Michael Jefferson, Band Director Check it out! The Western High Jazz Band performed at the Elon University Jazz Festival last Friday. Western went Mardi Gras a week early! Middle School Athletics Coach Isley, Southern Middle Turrentine Middle completed a sweep in the 17th DARE Basketball Tournament! Turrentine won the boys and girls basketball tournaments. They finished the seasons at Both teams also won the regular season championships. It s Great to Be A Trojan!

3 Hawfields Middle Feature by Karen Carter, Mebane Enterprise Hawfields Middle School earns the Best New Team regional MATHCOUNTS competition for the North Piedmont Chapter last Saturday, Feb. 22, in Greensboro. Hawfields 2 The Hawfields Middle School MATHCOUNTS Club holds the trophy and takes home the Best New Team in the regional MATHCOUNTS competition last Saturday, Feb. 22, in Greensboro. A group of dedicated seventh graders, an all girls team, studied math before and after school as well as during school hours to take home the coveted prize in the region of Best New Team in MATHCOUNTS. Hawfields Middle School took home the honors last Saturday, Feb. 22, at the North Piedmont Chapter of the competition at A & T State University in Greensboro. Two mathematics teachers at Hawfields, Caroline Smith and Nancy Trollinger, and their assistant principal, former mathematics teacher Donna Westrbooks, coached the girls to win the competition series that is offered in middle schools in the United States. An

4 all-volunteer program, said Trollinger, the founding sponsors are the CAN Foundation, the National Society of Professional Engineers, and the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics. A public school in Alamance-Burlington Schools winning among math academy schools, private and charter schools, virtual and homeschools, Trollinger said Hawfields Middle School scored the highest among new schools entering the competition to earn Best New Team. Turrentine Middle Claims Spelling Bee Champion Congratulations to Shiv Patel, Champion Speller in the Times-News Scripps Spelling Bee held on Monday, February 24! The theme for the month is All People Matter.

6 This theme was selected to help raise awareness about the American social work profession s 116-year commitment to improving social conditions and quality of life opportunities for everyone. Social workers across the globe believe that all people have dignity and deserve respect. Our goals as social workers are to improve relationships within families, make social support systems more effective and build stronger communities. Did you know? o o o o School social work had its beginnings in the early 20th century amid concerns about underprivileged students in the school systems of New York City, Boston and Hartford, Connecticut. Social workers in each of these cities visited schools and the homes of underprivileged students and worked to enhance understanding between families and schools. These early school social workers were known as "visiting teachers." In 1913, Rochester, New York, became the first school system in the nation to institute a school social work program. In the ensuing decades, school social workers grew in numbers across the country in response to changing times and needs. Laws that required children to attend school drew attention to the need for workers who understood the affects of poverty and poor health on school attendance. Please take some time during this week to say thank you to your School Social Worker for the services they provide to ABSS students and their families! GEAR UP Goes to Guilford Jaya Martin, ABSS GEAR UP Program GEAR UP students from Cummings, Williams and Graham were on a college tour at Guilford College in Greensboro earlier this week!

7 Western High NJROTC Times-News Check out the great feature about the NJROTC program at Western High in this week s Times-News photo courtesy of Sam Roberts/Times-News Voice of Democracy District Winner Alamance-Burlington Middle College Cheyenne Delaney, a senior at Alamance Burlington Middle College, was honored February 24, by the Veterans of Foreign Wars. Cheyenne was the district winner of the Voice of Democracy, an annual scholarship program sponsored by the national organization of the VFW! The VOD is an audio essay contest open to all high school students in grades More than 50,000 high school students will compete nationally each year for prizes worth over $2.3 million dollars. The theme for the year is Why Veterans are Important to our Nation s History and Future. The contest will start in the fall and any high school student may contact their local VFW Post or go on line at the VFW website.

8 Cheyenne was sponsored by the VFW Burlington Post She won the District Six competition which spans an area from Yanceyville to Chapel Hill. The theme for the year was, Why I m Optimistic about Our Country. Cheyenne received a monetary award plus a certificate from Ken Sellers, District Six Commander, in front of her peers at Alamance- Burlington Middle College. She has been accepted to and plans to attend Muhlenberg College in Pennsylvania. Congratulations, Cheyenne! 9 Technology s Jane Braxton is Retiring! Congratulations to Jane Braxton in Technology! Jane is retiring today is her last official day on the job. Last week, the School Improvement Division honored Jane with a send-off party and invited her family and grandchildren to join in on the fun. Of course, everyone wanted to get Jane s cellphone number so they can call her and say. Jane, do you know where I can find it? and Jane, how do you do this? and Jane, who takes care of that? We ll miss you, Jane, but enjoy a wonderful, fun-filled 6 months.until the phone starts ringing asking you to come back to work! Elon Elementary The Kiwanis Club honored Elon Elementary School's Terrific Kids award recipients with a banquet! Our Terrific Kids enjoyed dinner, while listening to our guest speaker, Rob Johnson, Superior Court Judge for the 15A Judicial District of the Third Division of the Superior Court. Woodlawn Middle Kristin Riley, Science Recently, Woodlawn Middle hosted graduate students from North Carolina State University s Future Renewable Electrical Energy Delivery and Management (FREEDM) Systems Center to learn about energy. The graduate students led the 8 th graders through hands-on labs and gave insight into engineering as a career! The visit is an extension of my participation in the Research Experience for Teachers program offered by the FREEDM Systems Center. A great experience!

11 Western Alamance Robotics Club competes in San Antonio, Texas The Western Alamance Robotics Club, Aperture Science, is competing this week in San Antonio, Texas for the South Super Regional FTC Championship! 13 North Graham Elementary Joy Rust, Music Teacher CLOWNS! Thirty five students in grades 3, 4 and 5 presented a musical, CLOWNS, this week! There gave 2 evening performances, as well as one for the student body on Thursday afternoon. The Clowns traveled to Twin Lakes Community on Tuesday and presented it to residents. The musical was co-directed by Tracy Taylor (Media Specialist) and Joy Rust (Music Specialist). What's a field trip without a visit to Golden Corral? The Clowns enjoyed cotton candy, the chocolate fountain and soft serve ice cream. Don't worry, they also ate a lot of pizza and fried chicken! Fifteen family members also joined us for dinner at the Golden Corral.

14 Western High Michael Jefferson, Band Director The All American Brigade Marching Band from Western HS will be traveling to NYC to march in the St. Patrick's Day Parade on March 17, 2014! We are taking 156 people on the trip: 107 students from ABSS, 3 staff and 45 chaperones. The band leaves Friday March 14 and will drive all night to get to NYC on Saturday. While in NYC the students will visit museums, prominent landmarks, churches and the 911 memorial. On Sunday night, the students will participate in a dinner cruise around the city and be able to meet students from some of the other visiting bands. The Western Band was 1 of only 15 bands in the country invited to march as a visiting band (a visiting band is a band not from NYC or the surrounding area - local bands receive yearly invitations)! The New York City St. Patrick's Day parade is the largest and oldest parade in the United States. It began in 1762 and is in its 253rd consecutive year of operation with over 150,000 people marching and over 650 units in participation. The parade route runs from 44th street and 5th ave. to 79th street and 5th ave. The parade is televised on NBC, but perhaps only regionally. Anyone can stream the parade live via this link: The All American Brigade should be on sometime between 3:00pm and 5:00pm. Thank you to the Western community for your support in this endeavor... for buying fruit, discount cards, pancakes, bbq and anything else we've thrown at you for the past few months! Congratulations! Western High Exploration Stephanie Mitchener, Career Development Coordinator On February 27 and February 28, 8th graders from Western Middle caught a glimpse of their future as they experienced Western Exploration. During this tour, students learned about the many elective classes offered at Western High, participated in a question/answer sessions with a junior/senior tour guide and observed authentic high school classes. ROTC, Theater Arts and Dance Company also performed for our visitors.

15 Many questions were answered concerning next week s registration and hopefully, our guest felt more comfortable with their future when they left than they did when they arrived!

16 Newlin Elementary Janice Davern, Pre-K Teacher Students in Mrs. Janice and Mr. Kelvin s Pre-Kindergarten class were introduced to the wonderful stories of Dr. Seuss. The stories were enriched with smart board lessons, measuring feet, painting, and lots of rhyming! Happy Birthday Dr. Seuss!!
