3 Message from the Chair Happy New Year! I am looking forward to working with the Executive Committee and other Section Members to put on a fun and informative program in the coming year. The spring schedule is taking shape. The first Executive Committee meeting will be February 23 rd at 6:00 at UMBC all Section Members are welcome to attend (details below). Also planned for spring: WCC Dinner, Wednesday, February 17 th : Nandini Mouli, Ph.D. "Women Empowerment through Chemistry", Towson University (all are welcome!) Student Awards Luncheon, Sunday, April 10 th, Notre Dame of Maryland University In April, the Chemistry Olympiad will take place at Notre Dame of Maryland University and an Earth Day event for high school students is planned The Remsen Awards Ceremony and Reception will take place May 12 th at Johns Hopkins University. 50 and 60 Year Members Luncheon, Friday May 27 th at the Double Tree Hilton in Pikesville In June, a fun outing to an Orioles game is being planned. Please contact me if you would like to be involved in the planning of any of the above events, or if you have ideas for new events that you would like to see the Section organize. 4 Women Chemists Event "Women Empowerment through Chemistry" Nandini Mouli, Ph.D. Towson University, Smith Hall Science Building Rooms 554 and York Rd, Towson, MD Wednesday, February 17th 5:30 pm Directions to Towson may be found here: Speaker Bio: Dr. Nandini Mouli is a Founder/Principal of esai LLC., an energy and environmental engineering consulting company located at Reisterstown, Maryland. Prior to starting esai LLC, she managed energy and chemical businesses in DuPont for 22 years where she drove operational excellence and sustainability at clients with green Six Sigma methodology. She also held a strategic consultant role for the Maryland Energy Administration from overseeing the commercial, industrial and institutional sector energy efficiency initiatives. At esai LLC, she consults on implementation of energy management practices and her emphasis is on promoting the Combined Heat and Power program in Maryland. She proposed this program to the Maryland Public Service Commission in 2010 and won the State s approval to have new financial incentives through the utilities. For its innovative growth, esai LLC was awarded as the best woman- owned small business of the year 2015 by the Greater Baltimore Business Council on 11/6/15. Dr. Mouli has applied for 46 patents and has been awarded 23 to date. She has secured three Department of Energy Grants of about $10 million value. She has authored technical papers and several business plans on carbon abatement, climate change, green buildings, Distributed Energy Services and energy efficiency. She has also led numerous collaborative initiatives with DOE, EPA, University of Maryland and ASHRAE. Dr. Mouli is a featured public speaker on energy policies and programs and has been an invited speaker by the US Green Buildings Council, Association of Energy Engineers, Maryland Manufacturers Associations and Maryland Energy Leadership Groups. In leisure, she hosts a weekly TV series, The E3 Show that airs on a Public Television, GTV Networks, and which focuses on current topics in Energy, Environment and the Economy. She is a Director of several service and religious organizations and moderates for the National Chemistry Challenge, "You Be The Chemist". 5 Recent Activities 2015 Maryland Chemist of the Year: Dr. Jason Dworkin Dr. Jason Dworkin was selected as the 2015 recipient of the Maryland Chemist of the Year award. Dr. Dworkin is Chief of Astrochemistry & Project Scientist for OSIRIS- REx at NASA Goddard Space Flight Center. The event was held at Notre Dame of Maryland University. Dr. Dworkin gave a stimulating presentation titled "Chirality of Extraterrestrial Amino Acids". Dr. Angela Sherman, Chair of the Maryland Chemist of the Year Committee, presented Dr. Dworkin with a plaque and Proclamation from the Governor of Maryland proclaiming December 9, 2015 as Maryland Chemist Day ACS Leadership Institute Beatrice Salazar, (chair- elect 2018), attended the ACS Leadership Institute held in Dallas, Texas, January 22nd- January 24th, Participants from ACS local sections from across the country were present. The conference held a variety of sessions related to increasing the success of local ACS sections. Titles included, Planning Successful Activities, Social Media Strategies for your Local Section, and Engaging and Motivating Volunteers. Mrs. Salazar, presented a poster at the Institute and gave a presentation which February, 2016 Volume 72, Number 1

6 highlighted one of the most successful events last year of the MD ACS Section, the 3D- Printing Science Café organized by Dr. Sandra Young Remsen Award to Dr. Charles Lieber The Maryland Section of the American Chemical Society is pleased to announce that Dr. Charles M. Lieber, Chairman of the Department of Chemistry and Chemical Biology at Harvard University, is the recipient of the 2016 Remsen Award. The Remsen Award was established in 1946 to commemorate the career of Ira Remsen, first Professor of Chemistry and second President of the Johns Hopkins University, as a chemist, educator, and administrator. The Remsen Award Lecturers are chemists of outstanding achievement, in keeping with Ira Remsen's long and devoted career as an exponent of the highest standards in teaching and research in chemistry. Per tradition, Dr. Lieber will present the Remsen Lecture on May 12th in Remsen Hall on the campus of Johns Hopkins University. Undergraduate and Student Travel Awards The Maryland Section is pleased to award each of the following students $400 to help defray expenses as they present posters at the national ACS meeting in San Diego in March: Brandon Drennen, Daniel Van Eker, and Geoffrey Shimberg (all three from Univeristy of Maryland- Baltimore School of Pharmacy), Sara Maloney, Taylor Watts, and Brandon Smiddy (all three from Towson University), John Andjaba from Mount St. Mary's College, Ryan Drazenovic from Stevenson University, Alex Jarnot, Ryan Franklin, and Angela Mansfield (all three from Hood College), Samira Azemati and Sabreea Parnell (both from Morgan State University), Thomas Connor Donahue from St. Mary's College, and Danielle Brown (presenting her research done at Frederick Community College). We hope the students find the meeting educational and enjoyable and that they make many valuable contacts in the world of chemistry. Reminder: Call for 2016 Student ACS Award Nominees A reminder for the Chemistry Departments of area colleges and universities to submit the name of their 2016 Student ACS awardee. The annual Student Award Ceremony will take place at Notre Dame of Maryland University on April 10, 12-3 PM. The name, address and a digital photo head shot ~ kb of each schools awardee should be ed to George Farrant (gfarrant@yahoo.com) no later than Feb 12, Job Opportunity: Chemist Wanted Wildlife International, a Division of EAG, located near the Chesapeake Bay in historic Easton, Maryland, is one of the world s leading contract research laboratories providing environmental toxicology, fate and analytical testing services to a world- wide clientele. We are currently seeking a qualified chemist with experience in a variety of analytical instrumentation (HPLC, GC, LC/MS, GC/MS) for the analysis and quantification of materials. Duties include method development and analytical support for studies used to assess the concentration and degradation of chemicals (pesticides, industrial chemicals, and pharmaceutical products) in a variety of matrices. Experience mentoring junior chemists is a plus. Experience in the application of these techniques in a GLP environment is essential. Excellent

This actively engaging evening will be comprised of presenters in the areas of science, technology, engineering, art and mathematics. Hands- on activities will flourish as the family members from Halstead Academy and Pleasant Plains investigate STEAM. Presenters have been secured so far from the following organizations: American Chemical Society, Walter's Art Museum, Maryland Council Teachers of Mathematics, and the Institute of Marine and Environmental Technology.
