1 May / June 2016 Some Things End & Summer Begins Summer is one of my favorite times of the year. It s a great time for outdoor activities such as watching a good baseball game, walking at one of the nearby parks, or sitting outside in the shade enjoying a good book. Here at the Community Center it s also time for some fun outdoor activities. The pool opens at the end of May, swim lessons begin in June, and on Thursday nights the adults have the pool all to themselves. Then there s Paintball. We will be creating abstract artwork as we paintball using reds, greens, and yellows. It s also a time for members to check out those walking poles at the front desk. I hope everyone will join us for our annual Putt Putt Day and our Lunch and Lawn Games. All these activities will be held in the great outdoors. Look for more information on these and other activities in this issue of the Scoop. I want to say goodbye to a long time Springdale employee and my supervisor for the past 4 years, Sharon Casselman. She has retired as the Assistant Director after 28½ years with the City of Springdale Parks & Recreation Department. I have known Sharon for most of her time with the city and have enjoyed working with her and becoming her friend. Charlie Wilson will be the new Assistant Director, and I look forward to working with him to make all our future senior/adult programs successful. The next time you're in the Center, please congratulate Charlie on his promotion. Sentimental Journey Friday, May 27 12:30pm Doris Day and Rosemary Clooney began their spectacular big band singing careers in Cincinnati. With pictures, stories, and the vocal stylings of a local professional singer, we will take a sentimental journey through the lives of these two great ladies of American entertainment. Tea and cookies will be served. This free program is presented by the Cincinnati Museum Center. Register by May 24. Putt Putt Golf Outing Thursday, May 19 1:00 p.m. Rain Date: Thursday, June 9 1:00 p.m. The Golden Putter is up for grabs! Show off your putting skills and enjoy the great outdoors. We ll meet at Eagle Tee Golf on Cincinnati-Dayton Road for a round of putt putt. While playing, keep your eyes out for Freddy the Frog hiding somewhere on the course. If you spot him, keep it a secret until the end of the round where you will have a little surprise waiting. After the round, we ll gather under the shelter for light refreshments and the Golden Putter presentation. Register with payment of only $5.00 by May 16. Creating Community Through People, Parks and Programs Natures Myth or Fact Tuesday, June 28 7:00 p.m. Put your nature knowledge to the test as the naturalist from Great Parks of Hamilton County tries to stump you with a game of Natures Myth or Fact. Make it a family game night as you play along with the naturalist. Can you really get warts if you touch a toad or is it true bats are really blind? Springdale s Gone Wild is a free event for the whole family.
2 Words from a Fitness Guru It s free, it s simple, and it can improve your life significantly. What am I talking about? Walking. Here are some simple facts about simply walking. The University of Tennessee found that walkers had lower body fat and risk of blood clots than those who didn t walk. A 15-minute walk after dinner lowers blood sugar. The Fred Hutchinson Center says a 1-hour morning walk is more likely to relieve insomnia than in those who don t walk. Walking 20 minutes, 3 times a week will strengthen your abdominal and back muscles which may alleviate low back pain. A Brigham & Women s Hospital study found that walking 30-minutes a day reduced hip fractures by 40%. Those who exercise regularly in their 50 s and 60 s are 35% less likely to die over the next eight years than those who don t walk; 45% less likely for those with underlying health conditions. A University of Virginia study indicated that men between the ages of 71 and 93 who walked more than 1/4 mile a day had half the dementia and Alzheimer s disease than those who walked less. The more women walk the less stress, anxiety, and depression they experience during and after menopause. The University of California says age-related memory decline was lower in those who walked. Loss of strength and endurance that appears to be due to aging is really due to inactivity. Studies show that 1/3 of men and 1/2 of women are completely sedentary in their leisure by the age of 75. The secret to a successful walking program is choosing a sensible plan and sticking to it. The big benefits of walking come over time. It s recommended that older adults engage in moderate (3 mph) aerobic exercise for at least 2.5 hours per week. Spread out over seven days and it s about 20-minutes per day. And two 10-minute walks have the same benefit of a 20-minute walk. The Fitness Team would be glad to assist you in starting a walking program. We also have walking poles available to borrow at the front desk. Join us on May 18 for our annual walking day. We ll have snacks and drinks for everyone who participates in a 1-mile walk anytime from 11:00 a.m. -1:00 p.m. Jay Health & Wellness Barre Fit W 7:05-8:05pm Badminton FREE!
