3 From the Board We have great news to share about U.S. Federal Funding for KSPS and other Public Television stations: Your voices were heard and funding was included in the U.S. federal budget bill signed into law in March. We appreciate each of you who told your lawmakers that you value public media. Because our members acted, we can continue our mission to provide on-air, online and multimedia programs that entertain, engage and educate to enrich all the communities we serve. YOU made it happen! Thank you to our Canadian Friends as well. You may not have the ear of U.S. lawmakers, but we heard from many you. Your support and encouragement certainly helped get us over this hurdle. Even more importantly, your continued financial backing provides the bulk of our funding, allowing us to hold fast and continue the mission even when the winds of federal budgeting blow. Thank you! Ann Hurst Chair, Friends of KSPS Board of Directors P.S. I hope you enjoyed The Child in Time on MASTERPIECE as much as I did. Just a reminder: if you are in the U.S. and have a KSPS Passport membership, you can watch what you ve missed online. Find out more at They re Baaaack! The Great British Baking Show Season 5 Fridays, 10 pm, beginning June 22 Follow the trials and tribulations of passionate amateur bakers whose goal is to be named the U.K. s best. Each week, the bakers tackle a different skill, the difficulty of which increases as the competition unfolds. The original cast returns as Mary Berry, a leading cookbook writer, and Paul Hollywood, a top artisan baker, serve as judges. Together with hosts and comic foils Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc, Berry and Hollywood search for the country s best amateur baker by testing the competitors skills on cakes, breads, pastries and desserts, crowning a winner after 10 weeks of competition. KSPS Community Advisory Board The KSPS Community Advisory Board provides valuable input to the Friends of KSPS (the station s governing Board) about KSPS programming, community service initiatives and how the station s outreach and other decisions impact the communities we serve. 10 Behind the Scenes of a Forefront Effort KSPS helped make history recently and I thought you d like to know. Usually in this space I talk about support for our mission, highlight a great program or announce a new event that we hope you ll attend This time, I m taking the opportunity to talk about some of the hardest-working people at KSPS whose work you always see but never realize who is behind it. The Operations Team at KSPS, headed by Lynn Veltrie, is one of the best in the country. They are the people who make sure all of those great programs you enjoy are there for you when you re ready to watch them, on all of our channels, whether through antenna, cable or satellite. From the Master Control operators, who make sure the programs are beamed out from our building, to the engineers who make sure the signals make it your home, to the traffic operators who work to make sure what you re looking for is ready to view at the appointed time all of these people are the unsung heroes of KSPS. Most of them have been here for decades and have forgotten more about how to make television than many of us will ever know. KSPS was one of the first Joint Master Control operations in the country: a model that makes it possible for multiple TV stations to receive programming from one location. Because of that success, KSPS continues to be asked by PBS to help test and implement new systems. Recently Lynn Veltrie and Asset Manager Barb Harms were featured on a panel at the PBS Technology Conference to talk to other PBS station personnel about the latest initiative. KSPS was only the second PBS station in the country to successfully implement this new system for retrieving programs for playback. This cloud-based system will make it easier to get programs when they are available; but it will also make it possible for all PBS stations to share unique content within minutes instead of hours or days. The work done by the KSPS team will serve as a model for PBS stations around the country; and it is one more example of why the KSPS team is considered a leader in innovation and execution. Their names are listed below and we thank them for their hard work and commend them for all they do for us and for you: Lynn Veltrie Operations Manager Barbara Harms Asset Manager/Master Control Operator Master Control Operators Julie Holland Randy Kenworthy Scott Schultz Lindy Turner Engineers Steve Covert Mike Peterson Tim Spaulding Shannon Wright Sincerely, Gary Stokes 10 Gary Stokes KSPS President and General Manager KSPS staff members Barbara Harms and Lynn Veltrie (center) present recent program-delivery successes that KSPS has been at the forefront of implementing.

11 Federal Funding Update Thank you! Over the last year, you and other viewers sent an astonishing 694,605 communications to your representatives to urge them to protect federal funding for Public Media. And they have listened: The President signed a bill to fully fund Public Media through this budget period. In time, we ll need your voice again. When Congress starts its work on Fiscal Year 2021, it will be vital to remind lawmakers that you support Public Media funding once more. To stay informed and involved, visit ProtectMyPublicMedia.org. The Only Thing Certain is The passage of the 2017 Tax Reform Bill has precipitated endless questions about its impact on our finances. It is generally thought that the increase in the standard deduction to $24,000 will cause charitable donations to decrease, as most people will no longer itemize their tax returns. Until time and experience provides the answers, there is one sure way to decrease your tax burden: if you are at least age 70½, designate the mandatory minimum withdrawal from your retirement account to a 501(c)(3) organization of your choice. Those funds go straight to the charity and are not accounted as income, so do not contribute to your tax obligation. As always, check with your financial advisor before making any decisions! March Membership Campaign Thanks There are many ways to measure the success of a Public Television Membership Campaign the most obvious of which are the funds raised and the new members brought on board. Just as important, however, are the less quantifiable aspects: the dedication of our volunteers; the generosity of our callers; and the warmth and gratitude we all feel when you remind us how much you value Public Television. From telephone groups to individuals behind the cameras, volunteers to on-air talent to local vendors who help add to the 'fun factor' of volunteering all of these people help to affirm what we are doing and why we do it. The March Campaign was The Big One the two-plus-week event that nets such a substantial portion of the fiscal year's budget and KSPS is so thankful to the following people who gave of themselves to keep the days moving along smoothly: Groups Empire Health Foundation Executive Women International Spokane Chapter Ferris High School National Honor Society Friends of Higher Education Inland NW Peace Corps Philanthropic Educational Organization Chapter R Spokane Shadle-North Lions Club Spokane South Rotary Team Friends Volunteer Trainers Marilyn Jones Hayley Lockerbie Mary Rush Mike Simock Concessions Concession Supply Pepsi In Honor of Amber, Nicole and Valerie From Charlie Corby Calgary, AB In Memory of Alice Derrick From Genevieve Steinmetz Medical Lake, WA In Memory of Gail Johanson From Jeanne Goss Spokane, WA In Memory of Jake Jacobs From Marguerite Jacobs Edmonton, AB In Memory of Harold Balazs From David Balazs Newport, WA From Phyllis Balazs Hampton Cheney, WA 11

Education is in their DNA they were founded by a group of educators in 1934 and that s one reason the credit union is happy to support KSPS, which enriches our lives with illuminating programming. STCU shares another common theme with Public Television, too: their members make them possible. As a credit union, STCU offers savings and checking accounts and makes loans. They serve members at branch locations throughout Eastern Washington and North Idaho as well as online. But while STCU provides essentially the same services as a bank, they are different at their core. They are a financial cooperative: a group of people who put their dollars together to form an organization, sharing resources for the benefit of all. Rather than paying dividends to stockholders, they return the money to their members and to the communities they serve. For members, that means low loan rates, high savings rates and a commitment to service. For the region, it means they provide free financial education for thousands of children and adults every year. STCU also provides support for organizations and programs whose goals reflect their mission and purpose, especially those benefitting education, arts and culture and community. To learn more about joining, visit any STCU branch location or stcu.org, or call (509) or (208) and thank them for their longtime support of KSPS. (STCU is federally insured by NCUA.) 19
