2 FROM THE COVER: Get Your Read On The Great American Read is a multiplatform television, digital and social campaign leading up to the unveiling of the 100 books selected by the North American public and an advisory panel of literary professionals. Beginning with a two-hour kick-off event on Tuesday, May 22 at 8 pm/9 Mtn, the high-energy documentary special hosted by Merideth Vieira (right) will feature appearances by celebrities and everyday Americans passionately advocating for, and explaining their personal connections to, their favorite books. Stephanie Berger Photography Voting and social media engagement will continue throughout the summer of NOTE: Canadians, you are not left out! You too are welcome and encouraged to participate in the event and the voting throughout the summer. Six more episodes of the series will explore the nominated books through themes such as Being American, Heroes, Growing Up, What We Do for Love and more. Throughout the summer, PBS stations will partner with local organizations and booksellers in the community to activate and inspire the next generation of readers through library, education and community initiatives. As summer turns to fall, voting will close and North America s top 10 books will be revealed, counting down to (North) America s Best-Loved in the final episode of the series in September. The Great British Baking Show Season 5 Fridays, 10 pm, beginning June 22 Follow the trials and tribulations of passionate amateur bakers whose goal is to be named the U.K. s best. Each week, the bakers tackle a different skill, the difficulty of which increases as the competition unfolds. The original cast returns as Mary Berry, a leading cookbook writer, and Paul Hollywood, a top artisan baker, serve as judges. Together with hosts and comic foils Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc, Berry and Hollywood search for the country s best amateur baker by testing the competitors skills on cakes, breads, pastries and desserts, crowning a winner after 10 weeks of competition. 10 Behind the Scenes of a Forefront Effort KSPS helped make history recently and I thought you d like to know. Usually in this space I talk about support for our mission, highlight a great program or announce a new event that we hope you ll attend This time, I m taking the opportunity to talk about some of the hardest-working people at KSPS whose work you always see but never realize who is behind it. The Operations Team at KSPS, headed by Lynn Veltrie, is one of the best in the country. They are the people who make sure all of those great programs you enjoy are there for you when you re ready to watch them, on all of our channels, whether through antenna, cable or satellite. From the Master Control operators, who make sure the programs are beamed out from our building, to the engineers who make sure the signals make it your home, to the traffic operators who work to make sure what you re looking for is ready to view at the appointed time all of these people are the unsung heroes of KSPS. Most of them have been here for decades and have forgotten more about how to make television than many of us will ever know. KSPS was one of the first Joint Master Control operations in the country: a model that makes it possible for multiple TV stations to receive programming from one location. Because of that success, KSPS continues to be asked by PBS to help test and implement new systems. Recently Lynn Veltrie and Asset Manager Barb Harms were featured on a panel at the PBS Technology Conference to talk to other PBS station personnel about the latest initiative. KSPS was only the second PBS station in the country to successfully implement this new system for retrieving programs for playback. This cloud-based system will make it easier to get programs when they are available; but it will also make it possible for all PBS stations to share unique content within minutes instead of hours or days. The work done by the KSPS team will serve as a model for PBS stations around the country; and it is one more example of why the KSPS team is considered a leader in innovation and execution. 11 Federal Funding Update Thank you! Over the last year, you and other viewers sent an astonishing 694,605 communications to your representatives to urge them to protect federal funding for Public Media. And they have listened: The President signed a bill to fully fund Public Media through this budget period. In time, we ll need your voice again. When Congress starts its work on Fiscal Year 2021, it will be vital to remind lawmakers that you support Public Media funding once more. To stay informed and involved, visit ProtectMyPublicMedia.org. The Only Thing Certain is The passage of the 2017 Tax Reform Bill has precipitated endless questions about its impact on our finances. It is generally thought that the increase in the standard deduction to $24,000 will cause charitable donations to decrease, as most people will no longer itemize their tax returns. Until time and experience provides the answers, there is one sure way to decrease your tax burden: if you are at least age 70½, designate the mandatory minimum withdrawal from your retirement account to a 501(c)(3) organization of your choice. Those funds go straight to the charity and are not accounted as income, so do not contribute to your tax obligation. As always, check with your financial advisor before making any decisions! March Membership Campaign Thanks There are many ways to measure the success of a Public Television Membership Campaign the most obvious of which are the funds raised and the new members brought on board. Just as important, however, are the less quantifiable aspects: the dedication of our volunteers; the generosity of our callers; and the warmth and gratitude we all feel when you remind us how much you value Public Television. From telephone groups to individuals behind the cameras, volunteers to on-air talent to local vendors who help add to the 'fun factor' of volunteering all of these people help to affirm what we are doing and why we do it.
