3 President s Welcome Byron Todd AFC President Welcome to Orlando for the 64th Annual Convention. I am pleased that you are joining us at the Caribe Royale. The theme for the convention is Pathways, Pipelines, and Partnerships. The pathway to success starts when a student signs an application form to attend one of our great institutions of higher education. We have many pipelines leading out to success in life after attending one of the Great 28. We will continue to add to the pipelines with the success of our college graduates, staff, and faculty. We form a partnership with our community to meet their needs and ours. This association works every day to find partnerships with other organizations for you, our great members. Take a look through the pages of this program and you will find a plethora of activities to keep you busy over the next few days. We will recognize and honor many of our great members, graduate our leadership class, celebrate our successes, discuss our many challenges, and conduct the business of the association. This event takes a lot of planning and preparation. Special thanks to the Planning Committee, Region Directors, AFC staff, Doug Ryan and Associates, and all the volunteers for your work. When you have an opportunity tell them Thank you for making this happen. We also want to give a special thanks to our sponsors and exhibitors who make our Convention experience a successful one. I hope that I get a chance to say hello to you and have a great Convention! Byron Todd, 2013 AFC President AFC Annual Convention Pathways, Pipelines and Partnerships

11 Chancellor s Best Practice Awards Randy Hanna, Chancellor, Division of Florida Colleges It is my honor to announce the 2013 Chancellor s Best Practice Awards. Through these awards, we recognize efficient and innovative programs and strategies that help make the Florida College System a model for the nation. This year s winning submissions include a wide variety of programs using software to support student learning in a visual environment; recruiting students back to college to complete their degrees; running a boot camp for students in developmental education; and delivering student counseling services through a public-private initiative. These programs were specifically tailored to meet the needs of diverse students from across the state. We are proud of the faculty and staff at our colleges who have worked tirelessly to bring our colleges these unique opportunities. Congratulations to all of the programs being recognized and to all the colleges that submitted innovative practices. This was a particularly tough year to judge as all the submissions were excellent. I encourage you to continue to share your innovations and ideas through your own best practices. Sincerely, Randy Hanna, Chancellor AFC Annual Convention Pathways, Pipelines and Partnerships

12 Chancellor s Best Practice Awards 2013 Awards Gaming Unlocks Virtual Technology in the Sciences Florida Gateway College Redesigning upper-level developmental math, reading, and writing courses as eight-week, 2 credit hour courses reduced the time that some students spent in remedial coursework; allowed some students to take transfer level math, reading, and/or writing courses in the same semester; individualized instruction through course modularization; and promoted student success through careful supervision/mentoring by faculty. Content delivery included mini-lectures by faculty and diagnostic testing to tailor instruction for specific course competencies. Project Win-Win (Return to the River) Indian River State College College completion is a key priority at Indian River State College (IRSC), in the Florida College System and across the nation. Project Win-Win known at IRSC as Return to the River is a researchbased, highly successful approach to identifying students who left college before earning degrees and bringing them to degree completion. IRSC ran a file of 11,000 former students against the university system and the National Student Clearinghouse to identify those who had some college credit but no degree. The Project Win-Win team created a data tracking system, sent out communications to the students and recruited them back to earn degrees with outstanding results: 72 percent were confirmed for completion (860 students) or re-enrolled (351 students) over a two-year period. 13 Chancellor s Best Practice Awards 2013 Awards Test Prep Boot Camp Miami Dade College Miami Dade College offers intensive, one-week boot camps in reading, writing and mathematics for first-time-in-college, direct entry from high school students who scored into developmental education. The college implemented the pilot program in summer 2012, with full implementation in summer The goals of the boot camps are three-fold: to reduce or eliminate the need for developmental courses; to prepare students to successfully complete the placement test; and to increase readiness for college-level courses. The content of the courses is modularized and supported by computer software programs. Students take a diagnostic the first day of class, from which a personalized learning plan is developed based on individual skill gaps. Instructors are trained in both pedagogy and technology to promote the highest level of student achievement. In the pilot implementation in 2012, the boot camps were provided free-of-charge to eligible students and attendance was voluntary. Approximately 1,900 boot camp seats in 120 classes were filled. During fall 2012, students who attended boot camps passed reading, writing and mathematics courses into which they were placed post-boot camp at higher-than-overall passing rates AFC Annual Convention Pathways, Pipelines and Partnerships

14 Chancellor s Best Practice Awards 2013 Awards Student Assistance Program: Maximizing Student Success through a Public-Private Partnership Pasco-Hernando Community College n 2007, Pasco-Hernando Community College (PHCC) partnered with BayCare Life Management to form the first public-private joint initiative among Florida colleges to outsource student counseling services. The outsourcing of student counseling services, through the Student Assistance Program (SAP), addresses the growing mental, emotional and behavioral challenges that impede upon students learning, persistence and college completion rates. The success of the program has been evident by an increase in student persistence, graduation rates, and the feelings of safety and security among students, staff and faculty as indicated by monthly and annual assessments. The PHCC-SAP has served as the template and model that has been emulated by postsecondary institutions throughout the country. Since its creation in 2007, at least half of Florida College System institutions made investments in SAPs and one-third of the other colleges have initiated conversations with PHCC administration to develop SAPs using the PHCC model. 19 CANDIDATES AND VOTING Are You a Voting Delegate? AFC is your Association. Each year, conference delegates representing their chapter have the opportunity to elect state officers on Friday, November 15, 2013 from 7:00 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. It is important that each chapter s delegates are actively involved in guiding the direction of the Association. So, how do you know if you are a delegate? Each chapter president selects delegates to represent the chapter during the Assembly of Delegates for bylaws changes and voting of new officers. Your chapter president will let you know if you have been selected as a delegate. Once your chapter has selected their delegates, an official list will be sent to the state office and this designation will be noted on your registration. When you pick op your name badge at convention, delegate will be listed by your name. Your badge should be used as identification while voting on Friday November 15 at 7:00 am in Antigua 1. How many delegates does a chapter have? This number is based on a one-to ten ratio, i.e. one delegate per 10 (ten) paid members... What if I need to change a delegate once we are at convention? Changes can be made at our Credentials desk in the registration area (PreConvene). Have your chapter president come see Alice Pendergrass and Evelyn Ward at the Credentials desk and they will be happy to assist you in filling out the appropriate paperwork to make this change. These forms can only be signed by the chapter president. The most important part of being a delegate is to be present. You must be present on Friday, November 15 to vote. Remember voting begins at 7:00 am and runs until 8:30 am. Make sure your chapter s voice is heard. Make sure you VOTE! AFC Annual Convention Pathways, Pipelines and Partnerships

43 Convention Program 9:15 AM-10:15 AM A I E Healthcare Education Commission Exemplary Practice: Collaborative Health Care Simulation: Low Cost - High Impact Location: Curacao 1 Collaborative simulation in health care education is an integral part of student learning that helps to build a strong learning foundation. Even with high and low fidelity simulation resources at the institution, there is still a need to implement ongoing collaborative learning that brings health occupations students (and staff) from all health programs together regularly to participate in realistic collaborative health care learning environments. This learning process can be cost effective and still have a high impact on the student learning experience. Pasco- Hernando Community College Health Occupations invited ALL health professions programs to participate in our low cost - high impact simulation scenarios which revealed great success with assessment of student critical thinking and social skill development. Health Education Programs interested in conducting low-cost, high impact simulation can be successful if there is a collaborative focus for successful student learning outcomes along with initiative and determination of faculty and staff to work together. Simulation does not have to be expensive, just meaningful and relevant to student and educator learning outcomes. Dr. David L. Sullivan, PhD, NRP, NCEE, Pasco-Hernando Community College and Julie S. Location: Bonaire 7 Circles of Innovation is a different type of professional development. Using shoptalk, what research has shown to be the key underling principles of motivation, and Steven Johnson s ideas on Where Good Ideas Come From, Circles of Innovation creates learning spaces both digitally and across Valencia s campuses where faculty come to mingle, contribute, collaborate, solve problems, and create new forms for great teaching. Circles of Innovation is Where good ideas collide and great discoveries are made possible! While each Circle is unique given the audience and content, all follow a similarly facilitated model: Spark, Share, Adapt, Play & Socially Rank. At each circle, participating faculty are sparked into facilitated shoptalk by engaging videos, info-graphics, or recent study findings. Participants and facilitators share concerns, ideas, and new innovations. Participants adapt and play with the new methods and technologies, and share and socially rank them with others across the college. Participants of this session will take part in a sample Circle and experience the innovation and excitement. Instructions, innovation handouts, and other links will be provided. We are also hoping to identify colleges might like to take part in digitally collaborative intercollege Circles of Innovation.
