15 Social Services 15 Medicaid FACTS Medicaid is a joint Federal/State program, established in 1965 that provides health insurance to eligible low-income and medically vulnerable populations. Medicaid provides a safety net for specific populations that might otherwise have difficulty obtaining coverage. To be eligible for Federal funds, states are required to provide coverage to certain groups of individuals and can choose to extend coverage to other categorically needy groups. For example, all states are required to cover children under age six and pregnant women at or below 133 percent of the federal poverty level and may opt to provide Medicaid coverage for institutionalized individuals with income and resources below specified limits. While there are over 25 different categories for which Federal funds are available, these groups are often classified into two broad groups: Covered families and children and the aged, blind and disabled population. Passage of Federal Healthcare Reform legislation provides states with the option of expanding Medicaid eligibility to cover Ohio residents with incomes up to 138 percent of the poverty level. Ohio recently took advantage of this option for the Ohio Medicaid program. For the elderly population, Ohio s Medicaid program provides access to many medically necessary services, such as doctor visits, hospital care, nursing home care, prescriptions, and Passport services in the home. Ohio Medicaid eligibility is determined based on several factors. Different income limits apply in each category to determine eligibility for Ohio Medicaid. You can apply for Medicaid even if you think your income is above the eligibility guidelines. Certain expenses may be deducted from family income to determine eligibility. There is no penalty for making an application if you are above the income limit and determined to be ineligible. In, you can contact the following agency for Medicaid applications: Department of Job and Family Services, 1928 East Gypsy Lane Road, Bowling Green, Ohio 43402, For more information about the Ohio Medicaid program, attend a Medicaid Facts session at your area senior center offered during the month of June. Check Your County Connection newsletter for dates and times. All sessions are free and open to the public. 17 Volunteer Views Here we are in the heart of the summer months -- lemonade and iced tea, porch swings, and summer breezes -- anyone need something to do with their time? Volunteers are the heart of every of every organization, and WCCOA is no different! This past April, the Agency celebrated the over 20,000 volunteer hours at a dinner with entertainment. Over 20,000 hours -- or the equivalent of 10.5 full time employees -- performing services like delivering a hot nutritious meal once a week, Monday through Friday; serving a hot, nutritious meal at one of the Agency s seven (7) area senior sites; teaching a craft or hosting a program; working in the Gift Shop or helping with the Rummage Sales; light data entry; counting the daily receipts, or saying grace at their site! We would not be able to touch the lives of as many clients as we do at any given time without your assistance. Our volunteers are truly the life-blood of this Agency! There is a current and ongoing need for volunteers in many of the capacities stated above, specifically in the North Baltimore and Wayne locations. If you, a family member, or a neighbor can offer to assist in any of these capacities just one (1) hour a week at either of these sites -- or any of the other sites -- give me a call or stop in to talk with the Site Manager! We are not difficult to find! Call , Ext. 1005; ; or me at jcmetz@wccoa.net. Smoke Alarms Save Lives! Did you know that if a fire starts in your home, you may have just 2 minutes to escape? Call to request your free home safety visit and smoke alarm installation. Partners and volunteers of the Red Cross want to help you, your family, and the community stay safe. Remember to test your smoke alarms monthly and practice your fire escape plan. Help Wanted: The WCCOA is seeking your help to tend to a garden! The WCCOA would like to pair up with The Common Good of the UCF, a local non-profit organization located in Bowling Green, Ohio. For the past 10 years, they have cultivated a program called the BG Community Gardens. They organize and work two community gardens in town. This year they were lucky to receive a grant from an organization, in which they are receiving assistance in growing and improving the gardens. From this opportunity, they are starting a new project that looks to offer a few garden plots to local Bowling Green organizations. These organizations will be able to utilize garden space, seeds, water, and tools, all for free! It is our hope to work with them and find some community members to tend to the garden. All of the produce will be distributed back to the older adults in the community. Are you willing to plant the seed of change and make a difference this summer? Contact the Programs Department for more information or programs@wccoa.net
