15 Social Services 15 SMART STEPS TO TAKE TO SAVE ON MEDICAL EXPENSES According to a study by the American Journal of Medicine, 62.1% of all U.S. Bankruptcies in 2007 were medical-related, and of those who filed, 92% had medical debts exceeding $5000. If you re one of the many Americans struggling with medical expenses, there are several steps you can take to reduce the burden and free up some of your hard-earned cash. BE PROACTIVE Talk to your Doctor. Ask if the procedure is necessary. Ask about having it done at an outpatient center. Ask who else may be involved, such as anesthesiology, laboratories and other ancillary departments. Stay In-Network whenever possible. Insurance plans like to contract with certain doctors, specialists, hospitals, laboratories and facilities. These providers are known as in-network. If you use an out-of-network provider, whether or not you do so by choice, you re typically going to pay much more than you would with an in-network provider. DO YOUR RESEARCH Know the real cost. Investigate fair pricing online at sites like Healthcare Bluebook and NewChoiceHealth.com, both are free consumer marketplaces that allow you to shop for provider s list prices and lists nearly every facility in the U.S. Choose the right facility. A great example is urgent care versus hospital ER. Urgent care facilities cost a fraction in comparison to an emergency room visit. These clinics are usually less crowded and specialize in non-emergency care. Know if your plan requires referrals or preauthorization before moving forward. If it does and you don t get one you may end up being responsible for the entire bill. ALWAYS review your bills and statements thoroughly. Those explanation of benefits (EOB) statements from your insurance company may seem like a big waste of paper, but in reality, they re important documents and worth reviewing. They are your insurance company s way of explaining to you, usually in detail, which services or claims it did or did not cover. Always check your statement or bill from your providers thoroughly. If your statement is not itemized, ask for a breakdown of the fees involved and check the math too. File an appeal, but act quickly, appeals usually have time limits. Talk to the right person. Explain why you can t pay. Set up a payment plan. The provider may reduce what you owe. Also offer to pay cash. Often the bill is reduced up to 15-20%. And when you have exhausted these steps, enlist help from a professional advocate. Hire a medical billing advocate, also known as a patient advocate. These service provider professionals offer a variety of services including paperwork/bill tracking, negotiating a reduced rate and help research treatment options. They function independently so there will be a fee but usually still will save money in the long run with the money they will save you overall. One of the best things you can do is be proactive and well-informed. Take the time to understand your benefits and treatment options to avoid unpleasant surprises when those bills come in. Also remember, you always have the right to refuse treatment or seek alternative options if you feel that the cost you re presented with is just too high. 17 Volunteer Views As usual, we are all wondering where 2017 went! It seems that everyone I have talked with found it to be a tumultuous year, but we were all in it together! Volunteers, friends, and staff have come and gone, but the stout-hearts that remain will dig in and excite in the New Year! Right? You bet! Home Delivered Meals are being delivered every day in every community in regardless of the weather, regardless if there are enough drivers, because of the persistence of a very hearty fleet of individuals who care! Although delivering meals is not for everyone, why not give it a try and find out if it is something you could do, alone or with a friend as a team. One day a week, a current driver s license, a vehicle and insurance, plus the want to give back to one s community are the minimum requirements for this opportunity. I know there are Site Managers who might like some help in tabulating their time logs or other statistics; why not ask yours? Do you like to play cards or do jigsaw puzzles? Why not organize a like-minded group and have a standing card -game or meeting at the puzzle! All our sites, Bowling Green, North Baltimore, Northeast, Pemberville,, Rossford, and Wayne, can use YOUR help or that of your family and friends. Why not call me and let s talk it over!
