1 SOUTH CARC AROLINA DISAS ASTER RELIEF HOPE IN CRISIS SPRING 2010 Baptist Global Response In-Home Care Kit Challenge In Sub-Saharan Africa the HIV/AIDS crisis is affecting large segments of the population. In 2007 over 1.6 million adults and children died because of AIDS. Currently, there are over 2.5 million adults and children who are living with the HIV virus in Sub-Saharan Africa. Because of the lack of health care, the limited access to anti-retroviral drugs and the continued increase in the spread of HIV, thousands of individuals die a very painful and horrible death each year. In addition to the HIV/AIDS crisis thousands in Sub- Saharan Africa die each year from sickness like cancer, tuberculosis, malaria and other life ending diseases-often the only care they will receive is at home. The Baptist Global Response (BGR) In- Home Care Kit is a compilation of medical and hygiene supplies that Baptist Global Response is asking churches, groups, or individuals to provide to assist caregivers who are taking care of home-bound, terminally ill patients. Items in this kit will make the caregivers tasks much easier, but more importantly will ease the suffering of the ones affected by the illness. The BGR In-Home Care Kit consists of a 5-gallon, heavy duty bucket with a sealable lid. In Africa a bucket is a very valuable item that can be used to hall and store water, Store food away from rodents and insects, and store other goods away from inclement weather and environmental challenges. Inside the bucket are times that will assist in keeping patients clean and dry and item s to protect their mat or mattress from soiling. Medicated lip balm and lotion are included to help treat the skin problems that AIDS sufferers battle. Other items are included that will make life easier and less painful. The 2008 pilot phase for the In-Home Care Kit Project ended successfully with almost 1,400 kits finding their way to Zambia and South Africa. This year, our goal is to provide 5,000 more kits to help 5,000 more families in need. BGR asks you to consider joining us in reaching this goal. By putting together at least one kit, you will help us provide a physical and spiritual touch to those in Sub-Saharan Africa who are dying from AIDS and other illnesses. Our local Baptist and field partners in Africa will distribute the buckets in a way that gives dignity and hope to each family receiving a kit. I want to challenger South Carolina Disaster Relief volunteers and units to bring a total of 300 In-Home Care Kits to the Disaster Relief training in March at Concord Baptist Church in Anderson. South Carolina is a leading state in BGR with international disaster relief. The cost of each care kit is around $130. We can meet this goal. SPECIAL HAITI TRAINING AT DR TRAINING CONFERENCE ON MARCH 6

2 A Note From the Disaster Relief Director... As we begin 2010 and our 21st year of Disaster Relief Ministry we have so much to be thankful for. We now have over 130 units and 6,500 trained volunteers. All volunteers need to be attached to units and teams so when a call out happens you will have a better chance to serve. We have a number of outstanding partners in the state Volunteer Organizations Active in Disaster (V.O.A.D.); the American Red Cross, the Salvation Army, Emergency Management Division (EMD), DHEC, DSS, Harvest Hope Food Bank, State Guard, Governor s Office, Lt. Governor s Office on Aging, and others. It is important to know the local emergency managers in your county. Let them know you are able to help in a time of disaster and what we can provide on a state and national level. Our next training opportunity is March 5-6 at Anderson University in Anderson, SC. We will offer four training sessions (you can take two on Friday and two on Saturday - check the schedule on following pages). We will offer a special session on How to Prepare to Respond to Haiti on Saturday from 9 a.m.-12 noon. The National Disaster Relief Roundtable has voted that all DR volunteers must be credentialed (IDs) by January 01, Homeland Security is cracking down on who can and cannot enter some disaster areas, and these new IDs are essential for their security purposes. All Blue Hats/Unit Leaders need to complete ICS 100 and ICS 200 by the June Convocation. We will offer times at the Baptist Convention building to complete your ICS requirements February 17, April 20, June 10, and August 10. We had a wonderful 20th anniversary for the Ministry of Disaster Relief in South Carolina. Ashley River Baptist Church and church family were gracious hosts for this celebration. I also wanted to thank Jackie Elms for making the fourteen cakes for the Friday night celebration. I am very honored and humbled to represent each of our volunteers as I accepted the Order of the Palmetto from the Governor, as our Ministry in Disaster Relief continues to make a difference in the lives of people as they experience the love of Jesus. HAITI UPDATE: The 7.0 earthquake that has caused a tremendous amount of destruction and loss of lives on the island has been in the forethought of our minds since January 12, A BGR/NAMB Assessment Team traveled to Haiti on January 18, We will send in a medical team first, and other teams will follow for many months to come. If you feel called to respond to disaster relief work in Haiti prepare your heart in prayer. Conditions are very primitive, and you must be in great physical condition to serve: due to conditions all volunteers will have to go self-contained. Send your monetary contributions to SC Baptist Disaster Relief at: 190 Stoneridge Drive, Columbia, South Carolina Mark Haiti Victims or Haiti Efforts on your memo line. AGAIN: We will offer a special session on How to Prepare to Respond to Haiti on Saturday from 9 a.m.-12 noon. We Are Ambassadors for Christ, Director, Disaster Relief Group OPPORTUNITY TO COMPLETE YOUR ICS TESTING In order for South Carolina Baptist Disaster Relief to work with organizations such as the F.E.M.A.,the American Red Cross, the Salvation Army, and other entities we must comply with ICS (Incident Command System). We have been asking volunteers to take the ICS 100 class. This class reviews the Incident Command System and its function. Other classes such as the ICS 200, ICS 700, ICS 800, etc. are also available for completion; depending upon your level of training and desire to learn more. At the end of each on-line class there is a test and a certificate is sent immediately upon completion of the course and test. Therefore, we will make available the computer lab, at the Baptist Building, for any volunteer who wishes to come in and complete these on-line classes. Why come to the Baptist Building? Many volunteers have expressed that they have dial-up and get bumped every time they get on-line for long periods of time or that they just don t have the discipline to sit for an hour or more without assis tance or guidance through the process. There are those who do not have access to a computer at all. Of course you may still go through the courses at home. Just remember that Brenda needs a copy of your certificate that you receive at the end of each course. DATES for ICS Classes (open from 8:30 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.) Wednesday, February 17, 2010 Tuesday, April 20, 2010 Thursday, June 10, 2010 Tuesday, August 10, 2010 Page 2
