1 Services What is Hospice? as defined by the Carolinas Center for Hospice & End of Life Care What you should know about Hospice? Focus is on controlling pain, managing symptoms and providing comfort, dignity and quality of life. Hospice care is for patients whose illness is no longer responding to aggressive, curative therapy. The patient & family make up the core of the Hospice team and are the center of all decision-making. Hospice care eases the daily responsibilities of caregivers and families with guidance and support in the home. Hospice guides families through the overwhelming experiences faced everyday. Hospice treats the person, not the disease. Hospice Care is available to meet your needs 24 hours a day. What does your Hospice Benefit Include? On Call nurses that are available day and night Rapid Response time Aide services for assistance with personal care & homemaking Volunteers a new friend, errands, transportation, meals, etc Counseling services for patient and/or caregivers/children/ grandchildren Pharmacy & medical consultation Respite care in a contracted facility Social workers / family support specialists Medications related to diagnoses paid for by hospice Medical equipment Spiritual care, prayer, guidance, loving support Symptom and pain management Physician home visits, if needed Who pays for Hospice Hospice is covered by Medicare, Medicaid & most Insurance providers. When is Hospice right for me & my loved one? When you have decided to change from an aggressive treatment approach to comfort & symptom management approach Many families tell us they have to ask for Hospice services you have the right to ask for a hospice presentation or evaluation and the right to choose who provides your hospice care. When frequent hospital & ER admissions are not resulting in improved condition but are becoming more of a burden than a help. When the patient is experiencing a significant increased dependence & decline in ability to participate in activities of daily living. When your physician has spoken with you about Comfort Care or a more palliative approach to care. Most people tell us, I wish I would have started this service sooner but nobody told us about Hospice People want to feel they have helped a loved one deal with physical & emotional pain. They want to be involved but they don t want to be overwhelmed or alone. Hospice can be there with you. You don t have to be alone. A Hospice Team member is available anytime to discuss options & provide information so you can decide when it is right for you. Provided by Interim Hospice, T Hospice is not just about how you die. Hospice offers care when a cure isn t a possibility. It gives many the chance to live each moment to the fullest. To be at home. To be pain-free. To just...be. Although men also provide assistance, female caregivers may spend as much as 50% more time providing care than male caregivers. From Family Caregiver Alliance Caregiving also has a substantial impact on business. Absenteeism, replacing employees who quit in order to provide care and other caregiving-related activities can have serious financial consequences to employers. For instance: The cost to businesses to replace women caregivers who quit their jobs because of their caregiving responsibilities has been estimated at $3.3 billion. Absenteeism among women caregivers due to caregiving responsibilities costs businesses almost $270 million. The cost to businesses because of partial absenteeism(e.g., extended lunch breaks, leaving work early or arriving late) due to women s caregiving has been estimated at $327 million. Caregiving-related workday interruptions add another $3.8 billion to the burden borne by businesses. Metropolitan Life Insurance Company, & National Alliance for Caregiving 70
