Going to Washington? Board Members Message by Setsy Sadamoto Larouche, Membership Chair The National JACL Convention will be held July 24th to July 26th in Washington, D.C. with a theme of Justice for All and all JACL members and friends are invited to attend! The Convention will commemorate the 25th Anniversary of the Civil Liberties Act of 1988 which resulted in a Presidential apology and symbolic payment of $20,000 to the internees, evacuees, and persons of Japanese ancestry who lost liberty or property because of discriminatory action by the Federal government during World War II. This convention will be unique in many ways. It will have an opening banquet with members of Congress and many other Washington dignitaries. There will be a reception at the National Archives where the actual documents signed by Congress and President Reagan will be on display, and they are also working on a reception at the residence of the Ambassador of Japan to the United States. Since this is such a historic event, Portland JACL is helping Unite People (UP), our youth group, send a dozen youth to the Convention in a group headed by Dr. Connie Masuoka. Following the Convention, the group will spend a few extra days visiting the Smithsonian American History Museum, the Memorial to Japanese-American Patriotism in World War II, and several other cultural and educational venues. As part of the fundraising effort to send the kids to the Convention, there will be a Chili Feed on Saturday, May 18 at 5 p.m. in the basement of Epworth United Methodist Church. However, if you can t make it to the Chili Feed, consider donating to the cause by going to and clicking the donation Coffee Cup at the bottom of the page. Donations can also be made via check sent to our PO Box address that is on the back page of this newsletter. Please consider joining the UP youth and the Portland JACL delegates in Washington for this once in a lifetime event! JACL has secured excellent hotel rates at the Renaissance Washington Hotel Downtown. Additional information, including how to register, is available online at by clicking the convention link on the right side of the homepage. On April 13th, the Pacific Northwest District held its meeting here in Portland. Amongst the regular district business was the election of a new interim Governor, Sheldon Arakaki from Seattle. He replaces Chip Larouche who resigned as PNWDC Governor in order to accept his appointment as the JACL Vice President for Planning and Development. 2 Board Members Message Continued National Board meeting that was held on April 27, 2013 in San Francisco. The Minidoka Swing Band will have a performance as part of the the Inukai Foundation s Dick Inukai Birthday Run that starts at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 25th in Hillsboro. Details are in the flyer included in this newsletter. Our annual community memorial to our veterans will be held on Monday, May 27th at Rose City Cemetery starting at 1 p.m. Afterwards, there will be a small ceremony at the Lone Fir Cemetery to honor the early immigrants buried there who left Japan to work on the railroads. About the time you get this newsletter, we will be having the 66th Annual Japanese American Graduation Banquet on Sunday, May 5th to honor our graduates from the surrounding area high schools. Pictures of the graduates and scholarship winners will be in the next edition of the newsletter! 4 Portland JACL in the Community Photo 2013 Chip Larouche Mineo Inuzuka, an Oregon Veteran of the Korean War and recipient of the Distinguished Service Cross for his heroic actions as a member of the 7th Division, was inducted into the Oregon Museum Hall of Valor on April 30th. Accepting his award at the Gala Reception were (L to R) Loen Dozono, Yone Hara, Edwin Sano, Sho Dozono and George Azumano. Mineo Inuzuka also served in Vietnam and World War II and was drafted into the US Army on June 21, 1944 from the Minidoka Concentration Camp near Jerome, Idaho. 6 Dick Inukai Birthday Run May 25, 2013 The Dick Inukai Birthday Run is a 5k walk/run benefiting the Inukai Family Foundation, established to honor prominent businessman and philanthropist, Richard Dick Inukai. Walkers and runners of all ages and skill level are invited to join in a day of fun and celebration, all for a great cause. The Dick Inukai Birthday run is Saturday, May 25th at 9:00 a.m. with registration starting at 7:30 a.m. Mr. Inukai would have turned 70 years old on the day of the race. After the race the birthday celebration continues with birthday cupcakes and live music provided by the Minidoka Swing Band. The Minidoka Swing Band specializes in 40 s big band style music and is a tribute band dedicated to the music popular in WWII Japanese-American Internment camps.
