The founders of the project, an American couple, moved to Panamá to dedicate their lives to providing a safe and nurturing setting for the least of the least as the founders call them. Casa Providencia when it opens will house severely disabled orphans while providing them with the therapy needed to thrive to the greatest extent possible. The program will include an update on the Global Grant now under review by Rotary International as well as a view of the country of Panama and the orphanage renovation project. New Rotary Club of Reno Directors: Our new Directors who will serve from July 1, 2016 to June 30, 2019 are: Kirk Bailey Trudy Nauman Perry Fagin Congratulations! Thank you for your service to our club. What can your $100 donation to The Rotary Foundation do? Your $100 donation to The Rotary Foundation can help provide textbooks for one elementary school in Zambia. Not one STUDENT. One entire SCHOOL. Or your $100 could provide a hearing aid for a deaf child in Pakistan, buy de-worming tablets for 112 children in the Philippines, pay for cataract operations for three blind people in India, or provide 230 blankets for the elderly in the winter months of Korea. Our club is hoping to qualify as a Sustaining Club this year, meaning each Reno Rotarian contributes $100 this year to The Rotary Foundation. If you haven t given yet, you can do it online at or through our club treasurer Harvey Fennell or TRF chair Anne-Louise Bennett. Your gift will count towards your Paul Harris Fellowship and support Rotary projects across the globe. District 5190 Newsletter Link: Be the change you want to see in the world (Mahatma Gandhi) With the enormous amount of support from Rotary District 5190, and my favorite rotary club- the Rotary club of Reno, I applied for the Rotary Peace fellowship in 2014, and I was selected to complete my Master s degree in the University of Bradford. I came to Bradford last September along with other nine peace fellows to complete our studies. My transition to living in Bradford has been a wonderful experience so far. Like every other peace fellow, I have my own Rotary host family who welcomed me at the beginning of my transition to Bradford. Their names are Richard and Maggie. Aside from host family, we have Rotary Host Area Coordinators- Ken and Pauline Robertshaw - to help all ten of us with anything we need. At the university, we have Professor Neil Cooper who is the director of the Rotary Peace Centre. Mr. Cooper is our main contact at the university who help us with our study programs, finding internships, or any other workshops or seminars related to peace within the University. I can t explain to you in words what an amazing experience this has been for me. The diverse body of students at the university and the depth of knowledge and expertise of my professors at the university is extraordinary. I took three courses in my first semester: Introduction to Peace Studies, International Politics and Security Studies, Political Violence and Terrorism. Just in my Peace Studies class, there were more than 30 different nationalities. As an Afghan student, I have never previously interacted with people from Sierra Leone, \ Sri Lanka, Syria, Kenya, South Sudan, or Colombia before. The University of Bradford and Rotary International - made it possible for me to interact with these incredible students from all corners of the world and that is an experience I won t easily find in other places. Just like everyone else, I love food. Thankfully, I can easily find Afghan, Persian, and Indian, American, Japanese or any other cuisines in Bradford. Aside from this, the university is excellent in providing different social events for students to participate and interact with one another. This semester I am taking these courses (Peacekeeping, Peacebuilding, and Statebuilding, The Authoritarian Challenge to Democracy, Regional and Global Security Politics). The semester will end in May, then I will be leaving for my AFE/internship to the U.S. I applied for the World Bank, UN, and several Think-tanks to complete my AFE. Time will soon tell where I get accepted. After the AFE, I will be returning to Bradford around September to work on my dissertation and to graduate in December. I am so very grateful for Rotary International and my Rotary Peace Centre at University of Bradford for giving me this golden opportunity to not only study in Bradford, but to explore different cultures and traditions and to learn the necessary theories, analysis and dynamic of conflict to allow me to go back to the field and contribute to global peace and understanding. Zabit Aimal Rotary Peace Fellow Department of Peace Studies University of Bradford, UK RYLA is Accepting Applications The RYLA committee is currently accepting applications for participants to the Rotary Youth Leadership Assembly (RYLA) to be held this summer in Grizzly Ranch by Portola. It is a weeklong camp in which campers will learn skills including leadership, teamwork, communication and self-awareness. Participants must currently be a junior in high school. In addition to Reno High School, other high schools will be considered. We encourage students who are related to our club members to apply. Please contact Tom Taelour for more information or ttaelour@charter.net. Applications will be accepted until February 25. Info:
