I had the privilege of handing out the awards which culminated with the Employee of the Year for 2012: Ashley Nelinger. Ashley served as an Activity Assistant for our Circle of Friends program and did an exceptional job at that. I personally admire our team here not only for their hard work but also for their compassion for the residents it shows in all they do each and every day. In other news, a recent managers meeting resulted in some great ideas for events in the coming months. In addition to the monthly UCLA lecture series featuring physicians from the newly opened Thousand Oaks UCLA Medical Center we will have concerts starting in June with the Masanga Marimbas, Casino Night in July will coincide with celebrating our two year anniversary, and, of course, the annual Belmont Luau that will feature a Polynesian group who bring fire dancers as well as hula dancers to the party, not to mention Chef Alvaro s fantastic menu that day! Sally enjoys the music of one of our favorite bands the Masanga Marinbas. They will be here again June 6.

Employee of the Month Estrella watched Belmont Village as it was built and she said to herself One day I want to work in that building. She feels like her dream came true. She explains, I give it to God and want to thank Fernanda for giving me a chance and training to be a PAL in the neighborhood. From a very young age, Estrella has been the sole provider for her mother and family. When she works she surely puts her heart into it. Thank you, Estrella!

Even though sun is good in our lives, it is important to follow some precautions to protect our skin and eyes. Sun protection is the most important thing you can do when caring for your skin.

3 From the Director of Resident Care, Christa Giraldo Have Fun in the Sun Without Getting Burned The days are getting longer and summer is just around the corner. Vitamin D is produced when skin is exposed to ultraviolet B radiation and vitamin D plays a key role in the absorption of Calcium. Even though sun is good in our lives, it is important to follow some precautions to protect our skin and eyes. Sun protection is the most important thing you can do when caring for your skin. Everyone should wear a sunscreen with SPF of 15 or higher with a broad-spectrum agent (protects against UVA and UVB). People with fairer skin, lighter hair, and lighter eyes often need stronger sun block. Some moisturizers have an SPF, but not all do. Check the label. People tend to under-apply sunscreen. Put on enough to cover your entire body and don t forget your scars. You can t skimp! Sunscreen takes 15 to 20 minutes to kick into high gear, so apply it before you leave the house. Reapply frequently, especially after swimming. To protect the eyes from harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays, you need to make sure your regular glasses and sunglasses have 100% UV protection. Not just any old tinted glasses will help. UV protection is completely separate from tint; clear lenses can have a protective UV coating. Sun exposure has been linked to cataract formation and, possibly, macular degeneration. UV protective glasses do more than protect against cataracts and other eye diseases; it also protects against another sun damage called apterygial, which appears as yellow bumps on the eye s surface. This damage can decrease vision and requires surgery. UV 400 lenses reduces the exposure of the eye, protecting the surface of the eye, the lens and the retina from UV light. If you buy over-the-counter sunglasses, look for the words UV absorbing. Also, don t forget to drink enough water. Hydration is very important to keep our body healthy. Heat can affect the elderly in a more profound way than the general adult population. It is extremely important for senior citizens to practice a gradual acclimatization to heat that puts emphasis on hydration. Join the Conversation! It is a great opportunity to learn more about our outstanding Memory Programs, meet key staff members. The families have also enjoyed getting to know each other and sharing experiences while learning how to deal with the changes their loved ones are going through. Circle of Friends Corner Our Circle of Friends residents have been busy with their routine of daily activities that are mentally, physically and socially stimulating. Stop by the fourth floor and check what they are up to, you would be surprised by all the things they are able to do in a single day. The nice Californian weather has also allowed the residents to be out and about, enjoying daily walks and weekly fun outings. Neighborhood News Our group is growing bigger and better every day, providing the residents with more opportunities to make new friends, find common interests and engage in fun and therapeutic activities together. Every new resident who joins our neighborhood brings their baggage of rich life stories and interests, so our Memory Program is constantly tailored to incorporate those interests and fulfill their days with meaningful and stimulating activities. Many times the families do not get to see all the great activities their loved ones are engaged in, so s are sent periodically with pictures of the residents enjoying our program. It is a proud tradition that shows our nation s commitment to honor the value that elders continue to contribute to our communities. This year s Older Americans Month theme Unleash the Power of Age! emphasizes the important role of older adults. This May, communities across the nation will recognize older Americans as productive, active, and influential members of society. Older Americans Month celebrations will acknowledge the value that older adults continue to bring to our communities by making an effort to applaud recent achievements of local elders and inviting them to share the activities they do to unleash the power of age. Belmont Village encourages you to take part in the celebrations by sharing your Older Americans Month resolutions with the U.S. Administration on Aging. Post what you will do this May to unleash the power of age on the AoA Facebook page, and follow up by sharing a picture or story about the experience later in the year.
