Well, now that Memorial Day has passed, we are officially in summer, so according to the fashion rules, I have proudly begun to pull out my light summer frocks and white pants. The beautiful weather provides us the opportunity to enjoy an active lifestyle and I hope that you are taking advantage of the wonderful calendar of activities for June. Of course the downside to our drought is that we need to play our part in paying attention to our water usage and avoiding wastage. We are looking into how we as a community might be able to improve our water consumption. Examples of ideas we are exploring include: improve our landscaping to include more drought-friendly plants; improve our work order turnaround time for reports of leaking taps, toilets, showers, etc.; limit powerwash cleaning of our building and vehicles; and avoid leaving taps running in our kitchen and bathrooms. I am sure that you have additional water conservation ideas and I encourage you to share them through our Resident Council meetings and suggestion box (located on a table near the Josephine s Kitchen elevator). Thank you to all those residents, especially those in our Neighborhood and Circle of Friends Program, who joined us in wishing Kathryn Fortney, our Memory Program Coordinator (MPC), a fond farewell. Due to an unexpected personal family illness, Kathryn and her husband, Joe, and their new baby daughter, Josie, decided to move to Illinois. However, as is the case with life, sometimes it s important to be close to family during difficult times. On a happier note, we welcome Tyrin Fajardo into the role of MPC. Tyrin comes to us from the Belmont Village in Burbank, and has extensive experience. Another change in personnel is that we have a new temporary assistant in the Admin. Office. Susan Wilson has taken two months of personal leave and we have Kristelle Padilla covering for Susan in the office. So please say hello to Tyrin and Kristelle. As I mention each month in this newsletter, don t forget that we have a number of opportunities for residents to contribute to helping us make improvements in the community. We hope that you will check the June calendar for the dates assigned to our Resident Council, Chef s Chat and Resident Activity meetings. 6 The Belmont Bells by Alma Berkus... the conclusion.... At last, dinnertime approached. Little by little, my Mahjong friends appeared and I felt more comfortable. We were fortunate to have our own special table each evening. As we all scanned the menu, most orders were completely altered to make everyone happy. Our waitress had a smile on her face (God knows what she was thinking). We then began eating and solving the problems of the world. From out of the blue, we heard our somewhat complicated orders repeated by a gentleman. He repeated somehow like this: I ll have soup to take. Another was bananas and two oranges please. Another, cookies and a cup of fruit. Then there was one who said ice cream, two bananas and two avocados. As the dining room lights dimmed, we mounted the elevator, dishes clanging. I thought to myself how very lucky I was to have my special Mahjong friends and to become a Belmont Bell. ~The End Jack, Yvonne & Issie Neighborhood News We are excited to announce three new members of our Neighborhood Staff. We are very pleased to have them join our team and look forward to all the new and fresh projects they will be contributing to our already great program. We have a date with fate~ No rebate. ~Issie Chesler Join our Creative Writing Workshop w/yvonne 1st & 3rd 10:30 Circle of Friends News Half a year has gone by and once again we have had another fun and exciting month at the Circle.We have started a few new activities for this coming month (such as playing Wii!) as well as doing some of our old favorites like our Scenic Drive. Our outing day has been changed to Wednesday, which will give us some new and different options as to where we are headed. Wherever that may be, be assured our outstanding AAs Greg and Cherri will always have somewhere exciting to go. Yvonne

7 Health News Vida-Director of Resident Care National Safety Month Falls are one of the leading causes of unintentional injuries in the United States, accounting for approximately 8.9 million visits to the emergency department annually (NSC Injury Facts 2011). Adults 55 and older are more prone to becoming victims of falls, and the resulting injuries can diminish the ability to lead active, independent lives. The number of fall deaths among those 65 and older is four times the number of fall deaths among all other age groups. We can all encourage residents to participate in daily exercise classes. Staying active has shown to reduce fall risks in older adults. Residents should set attainable goals when staying active and family involvement is encouraged. It s fun to stay active together. Check apartments daily for any tripping hazards. Phone lines and oxygen tubing should never be obstructing a walkway. Residents should always use their walking aide, even inside their apartments. Check to make sure your walker is by your bedside at night. Walkers and canes should be checked for any loose or malfunctioning parts. It is important to alert the medical supply company if there is concern of broken parts. Many times, they will quickly send out a technician to resolve any issues. Families, residents, and employees should immediately report any safety concerns in the community. Spills should be reported immediately and attended to swiftly to prevent any slips on wet surfaces. Most importantly, try to exercise good judgment and never attempt an obstacle or task that you feel might not be safely handled alone.
