6 Warren Gerig for photographs Tom "Media Master" VanWormer for Media Services as well as scribe duty Dennis Beasley and foundation members presented a $1,000 grant from our foundation to Anna Parrish from Big Brothers, Big Sisters to support "Operation Mentor." This program assists matching of children of deployed military members or active duty killed in action, with their big brother or big sister, and supports their activities. RF Smith said he, Barb Broshous, Mark Zeiger and Joe Foreman gave a $1,000 grant to Court Appointed Special Advocate (CASA) earlier in the week. These advocates are appointed by the court to advocate for and assist children that are victims of abuse and neglect. They provide independent reports back to the court. Rich attempted to exercise some presumed constitutional rights, but this argument was rejected outright by the frog (i.e. kangaroo) court. We are starting the process to assign a new foundation board - give RF nominations for Executive Director. Distinguished Service Award is being upgraded. Kiwanis International President Jane Erickson will visit this area and MHKC will host. 2 March is being targeted for the visit.

We have a session lined up on 9 December at 10:00 a.m. to read books at Kilmer Elementary School and at Palmer Lake Elementary School. This was originally scheduled for the Friday before Thanksgiving, but had to be rescheduled as schools were closed that day due to the ice. Mark Zeiger provided the latest on the Salvation Army Bell Ringing efforts that began the day after Thanksgiving and ends Christmas Eve. $10,000+ collected so far. Mark sends out updates on open slots needed for bellringers - Safeway, Kings Soopers, and Walmart. There is strong competition between the store managers because volunteers are needed throughout the holiday season. Reportedly there are signing bonuses being offered. Please check the schedule - just click on the big red bell at our home page: As we met Saturday morning, Bob Nissen and several members were on assignment next door at Grace Best school running the Craft Fair. "America's Got Talent 2014" national finalist Miguel Dakota performed at the event as well as our popular and talented local entertainers and school choirs. We had at least 80 vendors present. RF Smith, as well as several other members, were seen leaving the event with cookie bags in hand. Max Williams needs a meeting of the K-Kids Senior Leadership Program next week. Max said the Tri-Lakes Cares food basket distribution project during Thanksgiving went great, and the Christmas effort is on for Saturday, Dec 17 from 8:30 till 12:30. On Wednesday prior, Key Club kids will prepare about 300 baskets. Signup sheets being routed. Mike Luginbuhl provided an update on the Christmas Party scheduled for Thursday Dec 8. Happy Hour is from 5:30 to 6:30, followed by supper. It will be at the same location, but with different owners (the Pinery closed). Jo Carroll had a happy buck for arrival of poinsettias for our members. This was a cooperative effort with our great friends at Sertoma. Steve Stephenson told us about the theft of $15,000 of Boy Scout camping equipment from the Church of Woodmoor. Dennis Beasley's buck was for a safe month long trip with friends to the Middle East, ranging from the Mediterranean Sea to the Indian Ocean. Luckily, the U.S. Navy was looking after them during their pleasure cruise...

10 Jay Kelley had 2 happy bucks. One for a grandson on a team going to State for DECA finals, and the second for a grandson who is a 220 lb. freshman and just won his first wrestling match. Harry Brandon had an update on nautical terms, and that there is a USMC "Toys for Tots" donation bucket at Wesley Owens Coffee Shop in Monument. Ted Lunacek had a happy buck for celebration the first flight of his homebuilt airplane. Both he and the FAA were happy! We are glad he is still with us! Ted Bauman was happy to have been with the dozen members that participated in the DECA judging contest. They had a great time during the event. Kathy Strom had a happy buck for Jack Fry since he held down the Treasurer duties while she was on vacation in the Middle East the last month. RF had 2 bucks since he was privileged to support bell ringing for one of our members this last week and that he is feeling better, and that DECA support for next year will be much appreciated. 13 Scribe: Patrick Quinlan Col. Marty France was the guest speaker as head of the Department of Astronautics, U.S. Air Force Academy. The department budget is for cadet training and supplies and is funded by government sponsors and gifts. There are 20 to 40 cadets in the department with 17 cadets majoring in astronautics. The mission is to train a cadre of officers to understand space science technology, engineering mathematics and space security. Some of the cadets are selected grad program scholarships; 2 to 6 go to MIT annually. Falcon Sat 6 is scheduled for launch - from Cape Canaveral in late 2017 which has multiple advanced technologies with a payload of 400 lbs. Documentation is important in the program because of the continuing turnover of cadets. Cadets are trained in verbal briefings about their work. Also there are science

14 balloon experiments launched from the Academy to an altitude of 100,000' and tracked by cadets. Col. France has invited Monument Hill Kiwanians for a tour of the facilities at the Academy sometime after the new year.
