The new venue of Freedom High School worked out very well, especially for ease of parking and entry into the building. Victory House, the prime beneficiary, was again an excellent partner, selling tickets and obtaining ads, patrons and In Honor Of listings. While final financial results are not yet available, preliminary indications are that we did at least as well as last year. 4 HIGHLIGHTS Board of Directors Meeting FROM MEETING HELD OCTOBER 6, 2009: Treasurer s Report The balance is $14,263 at September 30. 5K net results are $9,998, before one of two Thrivent matches. A few minor expenses may be outstanding. Balance for the Morning Star Charitable Organization is $9,759 at September 30. Twelve members have not yet paid dues, and will be sent follow-up notices. Standing Committee Reports Club Operations Websites for the District and the club need updating to reflect current officers and information. Don Scanlon will follow up. Membership Harry Tachovsky will continue to work on new member packets. Mary Meilinger accepted Honorary status, and will be recognized at an upcoming meeting. Sarah Kunert will be notified of her Honorary status. Service Projects Deb Cummins is Morning Star s liaison with the Cops n Kids program. Rotary Foundation November is Rotary Foundation Month. Gretchen will talk about the Foundation at club meetings throughout the month. Don Scanlon is gathering information on the availability of Matching Grants to help fund a joint international project, using Bill Hunter and Lehigh University as resources. Old Business An update on the 5K Race and Fun Walk was presented. The entire board conveyed their congratulations to all involved, with special appreciation for the race committee, the timing team, and the large number of Rotarians who volunteered that day. John Kintzer has notified the Community Grant recipients of their awards, and is scheduling their attendance at upcoming club meetings. There will be a joint Rotary holiday party. (See page 7) The Morning Star holiday party will be held at Tom Kolepp s house. (See page 1) New Business Ten visiting Rotarians from New Zealand are being hosted by the Emmaus, Saucon Valley and Morning Star Rotary clubs. Dave Cincera will host a fellowship dinner on Oct. 10. Leave of absence granted to Mary Matz. Board declined to contribute to the Rotary Rose Parade float this year. Exchange Students Update Our two exchange students, Amaury Deshaies and Umut Aktas, are enjoying Liberty High School. Amaury, from France, is in the marching band. Umut, from Turkey, recently transferred from Freedom High School because his next two host families are in the Liberty area. Both have actively participated in the 7430 District Youth Exchange Programs, first a week-end at Camp Conrad Weiser, then a week-end at Hawk Mountain. This month both were involved in the selection of the outbound class for next year. Our club will not be hosting next year, nor will we be sending a student out. For the next year and a half, the committee will focus on recruiting outbound students and enlisting host families. Speaking of host families: Umut s second family had made plans to be out of the country over the Christmas holiday and we will need volunteers who can give Umut a real taste of a Bethlehem Christmas. Please contact Ginny for more information. Our outbound student, Kassie Helmuth, daughter of Ron and Elena, is having a wonderful time in Belgium and will be moving to her new family in Mons, where she has been accepted at the music conservatory. Thanks to all the club members who are going out of their way to make this a good year for Amaury and Umut. Ginny Wolkoff Page 4
